my main point here is that apple claims their closed ecosystem has security as its core objective, that theyre not being anticompetitive, theyre just protecting consumers. Epic is claiming that the behavior is anticompetitive at its core, and that apple holds a monopoly on the apple ecosystem.
The monopoly here is that Epic is no longer just a gaming store. They distribute apps, and technically did before this suit happened though at a much smaller level.
Apple does not let companies distribute their own apps through their own stores or even over the web on the iphone because they lock down the system memory. Again, they claim its to protect consumers, but they stopped doing this on the Mac, so clearly there is something else at play.
If Epic can prove that Apple's main objective is not security but maintaining control over their audience, then Epic is proving that apple is using their ecosystem as a functional monopoly
This violates several antitrust laws
and bare minimum would require apple to either allow app developers to distribute apps on their own terms, or would require them to allow users to sideload apps
