the homophobia and transphobia is baked into the games story is the issue. It's not so much of a "player" fault in arguing with it, since it was relevant in the first game and the DLC for it, but more just that the game beats you over the head with "THIS PERSON IS TRANS AND EVERYONE AROUND THEM HATES THAT"
so the writers specifically created trans and gay characters, only to then also include people that highlight it and go "LGBT BAD"
whereas in the first game it was.. i want to say "normal" but that sounds kinda offensive in a way? but it wasn't like "HEY LOOK, THIS PERSONS GAY" spotlight bullshit as in the 2nd

People want more lgbt characters in media that they can relate to. It's not about one specific piece of media either but a general trend.
And I think most folks don't really want "I'm _ and this is my story about being __" either because that's clumsy writing. They usually want "This is a story and some people like me get to be along for the ride or go on the journey."
Though there's a lot of personal pieces of media that are meant to be personal and niche which have those focuses-- stuff like Night in the Woods and Oxenfree and Kentucky Route 0.
