Similar to other building games, you’d be able to set the location for a building/field with obstacles in the area, but you have to “clear” them first before you can set the foundation.

If this is impossible, I would really appreciate a build mode where ground that you cannot build on glows red. Stone deposits and such have really weird invisible borders and I hate-love building fences because of it. It gives a nice little sense of achievement if you managed the task despite the sheer impossibility of it. 🤣 Often there is absolutely NO obstacle in sight, but the fence can‘t be built… 
Make these invisible boarders visible. Maybe this should be a separate suggestion. 🤔
