For the first challenge- shape- is there any additional details or context we need to know about the parameters for "shape" for our song, or is it intentionally open ended?

I think it's just inspiration. Like you could do something similar to Triangle Man, or a song about a blacksmith shaping metal, or use a square wave as an instrument in a song.

Nope, leaving it wide open for interpretation to allow the highest level of creativity possible. There is no wrong (as long as it abides to the server rules 😅 ). Really looking forward to seeing what you all come up with. No rush either, this won't be daily, it'll be from time to time, maybe evry couple/few days to allow everyone to have fun and take their time with it so it's convenient!

I would say once a week would probably be a good rate. Especially considering free users may take a while to be able to make anything good. But if someone has to go through and pick things that are good enough for the playlist, they would get overworked doing it more often than that. And if you did it once a month, then you would end up with 5000 submissions someone would have to go through lol

In all seriousness though, if the intent is to highlight high-quality works, then more time should be given to work on entries. 3 days is only enough to put generic gpt lyrics to a random gen and call it a day... unless you are one of the few geniuses who can produce a gem on short notice or already have something in the unreleased stash that fits the challenge. We have enough slop around here; why solicit for more?

this seems like only one side of a story. basically every song ive ever written, i write the lyrics in one session, and its usually within 15 minutes to an hour. definitely not several days 🤷‍♂️

Lyrics is only a part of it (and sometimes it flows well, other times one needs a few days)... finding proper sound also takes time, and there are always glitches that need to be polished... if you have a free day or two, sure, it's possible to turn around on short notice, but most people have other obligations too, so it's a bit heart-breaking to be forced to release subpar work (like I just did).
Anyway, just my two cents🤷‍♂️

Sorry to hear you missed the first challenge but there will be a ton more! Planning to organize this better as we continue to experiment things to see what fits best.

Some things we're thinking:

• shifting it to a one entry per challenge approach (will help to keep the randomization fair)
• songs shared being newly created (within the time window of the challenge)
• running it through the weekends Friday 9am ET to Monday 9am ET (this will help make it easier to plan around and give a 72 hr window to create something)

For starters really didn't want to hold restraints, the whole idea is to inspire, but that said also really want to make the showcasing of members as fair as possible too. One entry may be the best approach. Still thinking through this but wanted to add what's being thought about for transparency

I don't know if "songs being newly created" helps anything... one can always take an old song and do a cover, remaster, save as new song, anything just to refresh the date stamp.
But, glad to hear the team is experimenting with ideas!

Maybe this could be helpful:
If this turns into a regular event, you could consider using the Discord Event feature. It stands out more and also reduces the amount of work. Since the basic guidelines/info probably won’t change very often, (so far they are settled) you’d mostly just need to adjust the title.

Yeah tbh I ended up covering someone else's song because it's brilliant and deserves more recognition and people may click through to see where mine came from. And I had fun playing with different styles even if half of them turned out really weird lol

I still vote give us a week per challenge. Easier for you to arrange, easier for people who take 3 days just to ruminate on it and figure out what to write about. Writing good lyrics can be time consuming.

Keeps it fair. Otherwise someone that has a massive library of songs has an advantage. They can simply choose a bunch of songs to submit. While someone with a newer account (or just a smaller library) would have far fewer to choose from or may have to spend all their time making one from scratch. Limiting it to one per person eliminates that advantage and keeps it fair.

But why just one song if two would also be fine, e.g. for people who made 2 songs that are either both great or if they cannot decide which one is better. I am confident that the moderators are able to sort out any misuse of the spark challenges to advertise their whole portfolio. And I guess this was exactly the reason why there were and still are no such restrictions in the first place. Remember: this is just for fun! Besides, even the cash money prize remix contests allow you to submit several songs.

One submission per person limit gives you a better chance to be heard. I know many folks who, when seeing multiple submissions from the same person would simply skip them all. After all, if you, the creator, can't decide which of your versions is better, why would you expect others to spend their limited time just to be able to make that judgment?

• Extends. Lets say you generate Start - Theme 'x'. You have to include atleast x amount of seconds through the use of an extend, where the 'whole' track would still include at the least x amount of seconds.
• ☝️ To build further on that, you could do it with the other main tools. But that would exclude free-users.
• Personally, clowns are cool. But klown is kooler with a k.

I'd like to point out once again that 3-day window is too short. Some people are busy during the week, others during weekends; the only way to accommodate both groups is to run the challenge for at least a week. (Of course, I understand, it might be a busy week for yet another group of people, but still, seems like the best compromise?)
Another option (if there is no expectation that people would want to participate in every challenge) is to rotate the window: workdays for even challenges, weekends for odd ones.

I voted Week 1, because if events like that held in the past are any indication, it takes some time for Suno staff to sort out the entries and to publish the results.
Last year's Halloween event, for example, did not see the final playlist published until well after Halloween. Accepting entries during Weeks 1-2 gives Suno folks time to make and publish the selections in time for the actual holiday.

Maybe have 2 days of theme suggestion simultaneously with song submissions from whatever theme was chosen the previous vote. Once that is done give 4 days for submissions and the 7th day is just for everyone listening or whatever.

I'm curious why the resistance to limiting one entry per person? First contest had no restrictions, and it was mentioned. Second contest it was merely "considered," and it was mentioned again. Not sure what contest we're on now, but I suspect we're past the second one, and your current proposal still allows multiple submissions per person. Granted, you say only the first entry provided will be used in the playlist, but if that's the case, why allow people multiple submissions? I'm curious why you seem disinclined to limit people to one entry per contest?

I agree with others that the Fri-Mon timeframe is too tight. A week duration allows most people to find a few days here or there to produce an entry.

I like that you don't require a new submission. This levels the playing field a bit for the people that like to take a really long time to make songs, and also gives a route for people to share songs that they may have worked on, but otherwise were never seen by many people.

• ONE SUB per to encourage one's best work being in the mix, rather than slopfest to wade through.
  • suno-gen already there to spew & gets plenty of it
  • Suno-showcase already there for prolific creators to post prolifically
  • if one has new candidate, delete previous or it just ends up like suno-gen waterfall (self-policing preferred)
• **1x **per week to encourage folks putting some thought into it for same reason
  • 2x per week also makes sense, but maybe instead of Mon-Fri / Fri-Mon... NEST them Mon-Mon and Fri-Mon. (of course this prob makes it hard to parse in the channel, so maybe idea is DOA)
    • this still provides 2 engagement opportunities for those with the time, while catering to those with more busy schedules
• Start same day of each week, so those wishing to really put some effort & thought into can drop in to get mission orders up front ( in lieu of dropping in to find a kool challenge is ending in 12hrs)
• Won't be losing any sleep no matter how it works out... THANK YOU for the time you invest in curating the Discord Community!

I think the main reason why this should be okay is because it's meant to be fun and inclusive. We are surely trying to inspire to create, but also, inspiring to share what's been created. Most important though, want to make in enjoyable for everyone. It not being a competition by any nature and more so a challenge to invite creativity, it feels off to restrict people in such a way.

Though I do love the idea of encouraging people to test the waters of newly inspired music made, I also celebrate the idea of people having fun with this as much as possible. As long as it pertains to the theme and doesn't become another showcase channel to just share whatever, it's difficult to see where sharing older generations could negatively impact anyone else other then it not aligning with their own personal preference on how to approach these things. If that's fun for them, then why not?

To each their own I guess you know? Most important thing is to be inclusive to each person's unique interests and fun.

The other half of this is, well I'd need to moderate these things if we did. It would hurt my heart to tell someone that they can't share something that is special/fun to them that aligned with the theme but was created prior. Especially since I personally don't have a problem with it. Containing it within a theme seems like a reasonable expectation, but adding extra rules where I may have to remove their posts and confuse them or let them know why feels like stealing joy in a sense. Something I'd rather not do.

That said, we are experimenting with this to figure out the best path forward. I am but one voice and we're a community, so we'll decide together. We'll set up a poll for this next week and follow what people feel is the preferred way.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I like the idea of keeping the F-M and M-F contests in a short timeframe.

When I first saw the posts about Spark challenges, my impression is that it was designed to be a "quick creativity" challenge, that is fun and pushes our abilities.

All the current contests already have long timeframes and turnarounds. It's a nice idea to have a few meant to test the limits.

I think part of the reason for limiting to 1 entry is that it makes it harder to go through and hear every submission if someone is flooding the channel. Someone that posted early on might not get seen bc Someone else is posting incessantly. It happens on other art platforms I'm on for artwork voting. Someone posts their group of images and then Someone else that just posted a group posts 3 more groups and the one being more reserved gets pushed off/up and missed

If only the first submission is eligible for entry into the playlist, then that would be fine. That's where the problem was, but if it's limited to the first submission, then problem solved. 👍 😎

I am 100% for 1 submission per person. if anymore than that, it is just pointless. When i did Art submissions, it was only 1 piece of art submitted. it really challenges you to make something and choose what you feel is the best.

I really enjoyed this challenge. It SPARKED my creativity to write a trilogy about growing up in a very rural place. I love that i can write the lyrics and plug them into suno to get the music so quickly. I've learned a lot about [prompting] the instruments and melodies i want.

That being said, in response to your Letterman quote, I offer you this, "any time there are limited resources that cannot meet demand, there is competition." -- Any economist.

The original concern arose from the fact that there is to be a playlist created with randomly selected entries from the event. This was the concern. People that submit multiple entries would have a higher probability of having something selected for the playlist. Since this playlist means exposure, it has value.

Limiting it to the first submission resolves the issue, however.

Since English isn't my first language, it's a bit hard for me to jump into the chat in real-time.
So, I've been taking some time to read through everyone's posts, and I wanted to share a thought about the Spark Challenge,
especially for those looking for clear rules or "right answers."

Starting with a blank canvas is never an easy thing.
It's a place where the excitement of infinite imagination and the pressure of creating something from nothing exist at the same time.
It's the same when it comes to making music.

But, the reason I've loved this Spark Challenge from the very beginning is that it has always been a challenge for inspiration,
not for competition, with a focus on limitless imagination.
When I think about all the countless creations that can be born from a single keyword, combining the unique thoughts and ideas that each of us holds...
...it sparks more excitement, curiosity, and a spirit of challenge in me than any fear.

So, how about we try to lighten up a little...

I voted for songs created during the challenge only, but those above have made good points. I think the only way to actually 'enforce' the new songs only thing is to assign a hook/chorus or something of that nature that has to be used. Which in itself could be an interesting challenge.

I think i am the prototype of posting an old song. And after i did that and looked at all the nicely themed and really good songs that got posted after mine, it made so much more sense to me to get the brain neurons activated to create something fresh especially crafted for that specific challenge.

As difficult as it may sound, continuing to create content is one of the most important tasks. You can change names and playlists, or you can create a permanent one, from which tracks are removed and new ones are added. But that's how our genre charts in search already work. But if I wanted to go back to the tracks generated in version v3.5... and hear really good music - that's the playlist for me! The first "shape" is version v4.5. The latest playlist is already version v5.

In my opinion, if it’s called a Spark “Challenge,” there should at least be some minimum level of challenge involved, and the song should be created during the active phase—especially in the short FR–MO window. I can understand everyone who already has a fitting song, so why not just make a cover out of it? The creation date matching the timeframe doesn’t necessarily mean it has to be completely new— like stated "
songs created during the challenge only" just created within that period, which I believe can include covers/remixes of older ones also. I think that would be a good compromise. just my 5 Cents🙂

I've been really getting into adding counter-melodies. I started by experimenting with them on regular melodies using a few tools, and then I moved on to applying this technique to the bass and sub-bass in an uptempo track.

That's the point where simple generation ends and true creativity begins. I see a lot of users exploring this direction. Even though not everyone uses Discord, I think just participating in the 'Spark' playlists could really help us stand out. It feels like a kind of 'symposium' for producers — you know exactly the kind of dedicated people you'll meet there/here.

Hm. Requiring the song to be created during the competition favors people that have a lot of time to spend in Suno. People like me, who can spend a day in Suno here and there are at a significant disadvantage against those people that virtually live in the app and on the Discord. It can sometimes take several weeks to create a song due to time constraints. But if it can never be used anywhere, because "it has to be made during the competition," then it will get lost. Besides, the requirement doesn't add anything of value to the event anyway. A good song that meets the challenge is a good song that meets the challenge, regardless if it was created during the challenge or 3 weeks prior.

That is basically the same thing with extra steps. I mean, what does that accomplish? Is there a reason to prohibit songs older than a month? The recency requirement, whether it's "created during the competition" or "created within the last month" or whatever you want to define, doesn't actually add anything to the competition. It doesn't make it more interesting. It doesn't make it more fun. It doesn't even increase the competition (arguably, it reduces competition). It doesn't increase the number of people that can participate (it actually eliminates people that can't / haven't produced a relevent song in whatever the time period is). It's just arbitrary gate-keeping that effectively says "only people that are on Suno extremely often can participate." That's it.

Hey everyone! After reviewing the responses from the latest poll (Only new songs vs Older songs acceptable) thinking we'll just keep it open to what each member decides for themself.

If there was a landslide response in either way then it'd be easier to decide such things, but it being so close it doesn't make sense to take action for a couple of reasons:

• These challenges are designed for people to have fun and if sharing older generations is fun for 44% of the people participating then I peronally wouldn't want to stand in the way of that

• Due to this being something that really has no impact on how someone else participates and solely guides how each of us decide to approach these challenges independently, thinking it's best to leave it at that --whatever is most fun for you.

If this were something that was designed to be more competitive, then to ensure a level of fairness restricting things to within a specific timeframe would make more sense. But because these challenges are aimed toward inspiring to create and share, have fun and spotlight the community with the cool they create, there isn't much reason to prevent others from doing that as they see fit to.

Planning to continue experimenting and refining this together and through discussion we may find a middle ground we haven't discovered yet. I had one good generations with the two meters I was working with for mine. But in the end, the lyrics also carried the meters too. So I ended up removing those prompts. And let the AI work magic.

(Also helps they were both Tetrameters at base)

Sometimes I think of happy days of the past, when I had so little, but life never felt more full. I'm running out of juice on this joke, but I was thinking that a contest concept based on this period in Suno history might be fun. Think about how many people discovered Suno and the first song they must have played was Turkey Time. SO MANY PEOPLE. I'd love to see future generations pay their respects to a Suno Legend some day. Practically Spark just started and a Turkey Time contest makes more sense much later, when looking for something different. But I truly was thinking about Turkey Time today so that's when I'm writing this.

Dunno, but I just came up for air for the first time, like ever... & marathon'd the Nature Playlist & am blown away at the prowess & diversity of folks submitting. I'm usually 'about my own biz learning the ecosystem', but have done myself no favor by not seeing what the community is up to.... I was expecting to find redundancy, but DUDE... everyone brings their own thing to the game - & what a DELIGHT. Folks are keeeeeling it left & right. Thought I was done when I jumped in a 57... now there's 70... so will have to run through those soon enough.

Furthermore... my jaw fell off my face seeing the diversity the Suno DEV Team has somehow managed to sculpt into these models. For me, its beyond description the latent power that exists. So many avenues to explore I'm reconsidering transhumanism - but not really - looks like retirement is gonna be a mad house of a good time.

Hi! I have a proposal for the Challenge: A mix of 5 songs from different styles into a single mix while composing music with Suno. It's an interesting Challenge, and I'm convinced that very cool mix-songs will come out from everyone participating. (But for this, you need to talk to the software guys to increase the lyrics section by 10k characters and at least 2000 or 3000 characters for the music style promoter.) Having 5 songs in one, the lyrics from all 5 songs are combined. What do you think of my proposal?

How about same prompt and lyrics for all but you can change 2 of the style prompts and 2 words in the lyrics (multiple times if recurring). The play list would look like my main workspace but it would showcase how micro changes can make big differences….. or not. Would be fun to see. Personally, I prefer a suffix to the prefix, but I think it's the minimum to thank for all these challenges, each track refers to it (at least Spark and the name of the theme). It's clear that I'm a little disappointed to see that barely 10% of the tracks have a Spark marker, and I also admit to listening to the tracks tagged Spark first. But then, I might as well say the terms and too bad if it hurts, but it allows me to identify the tracks involved...

I said that because if I take the playlist at random, 'time', only 3 prefix/suffix, 8 captions and 2 descriptions. out of 69 songs, that's barely 20%. So, as I've already seen in this chat comments about the low engagement on listening to the palylists, my impression (maybe biased because I only did the SSC7) is that these spark challenges are for the majority only a disguised showcase (I post my track and I don't care about the rest) and it's a shame... personally, I don't care if I have to put a tag or not, but it brings out this impression of a discounted challenge. and once again, this is only my impression of a bitter old Frenchman 😉

Each week there is a themed challenge and put your creative interpretation into a song. It’s all for fun and the creativity aspect of it to see what others create with the challenge theme. Then the songs are gathered into a playlist. If there’s any further questions @slow hollow can answer them for you. I think I explained enough the basis idea of it.

There is no rule against your submission, but I would recommend to remove it and submit a song that you did not remix from an official song. Just so you can use your full creativity - if you have the time until Friday.

Question about spark submissions: I tend to edit my songs off suno in my editing software. Could I reupload as audio then submit that in submissions, or is it no-longer qualified after that?

You can edit your post by just selecting all and stick a period/full stop as a placemark, as well as remove embedded.

Then paste in your updated link and your comment.

This chat is for spark submissions, not the competition. You can do whatever you want as far as I'm aware though, as long as you are remixing the original song. Which means you can change the name to whatever you want.

Oh yes that was just a comedic type song. Although There was a comedian that did a standup saying we should teach kids to cuss. People are going to turn their heads when a child screams out profanities about how they don't know that person.

All joking aside as an actual PSA the song would be very toned down and kid friendly. Not a bad idea long term. Iv actually been bouncing some ideas on other topics regarding safety CPR and the like.
