A couple months back I had to rack two AI appliances at a colo for work, each had 8x H200's in em, collectively a petabyte of storage, each 3TB of RAM

Instead of emptying an entire reservoir to cool the servers we opted for air cooling

....the storage overheated in the first 15 minutes on both servers in a climate controlled datacenter. I had to turn the fans on full blast to compensate. I dunno if you've heard what 2kW of fan sounds like up close but it rather hurts the ears

Nah, I get the super-computer stuff at work uses water cooling, they're intense. But I thought there was newer stuff, like AIO or liquid cooling that isn't water based that works better.

I'm not so sure, at least with the servers, we had the option of getting water cooling that would integrate with a datacenter on prem solution, but you have to specifically choose the kit for whatever the datacenter is using so it all matches up. The place we hosted em didn't have that (and evidently not enough power because we keep tripping the breaker ) so we went air cooled

There's air cooled stuff that leverages that phase change stuff they do with the tubing they run through the contact surfaces for the heatsinks/pads in a given system to a greater extent, maybe its something like that? I know there's huge, passive cooling systems that depend on that almost exclusively too

Man, back in the final days of mainstream Windows XP support, we had this server that was so unreliable. See before vmware we had one physical server per critical service. One of them was so bad, that we used it for our ticketing system as to not subject other departments to it. Of course, this mean't the ticketing system was hard down at least once a month

Storage controller issues, backplane issues, multiple bad motherboards, power supplies, replaced CPU's, etc. it was constantly getting new parts and eventually it was on an extended support contract, and once it was virtualized it got retired.

So I uhhh... rescued it from the recycle, in my infinite wisdom, thinking it'd be cool to use as a home server. But this thing was basically the Server of Theseus thrice over, and every month that passed, another piece of it would fail. Eventually I turned it into a cabinet
