Here's my theory about why so many people mistakenly believe AI in music is a bad thing.

One word, slop. One-click generated AI slop is muddying the waters for those of us who use AI as a tool, just like any other tool that came before it.

I've been producing for decades and now I incorporate AI generated elements into my music, so my music is about 20-40% AI generated these days. I don't see that as a bad thing even slightly, it's empowering me to create music that is better than I've ever made before. It's not slop. It's my own production augmented by some AI generated elements. That, in my opinion, is the only way AI should be used in music production.

So it's my opinion that the reason there is such a negative bias against AI music largely comes down to how it's used by people who don't have a background in audio or music. They one-click generate a song, publish it, and we hear the results of their lack of experience and effort. Then we associate artificial intelligence with that sort of use case.

What does that mean for me, as a producer who uses some AI generated content in otherwise human-made music? That means I have to go on long rants to explain my production workflow every time someone mentions artificial intelligence. Why is that necessary with AI and not with any other tool? Because of the bias created by hearing slop.

So the bottom line is, not all AI generated content is slop. But the slop has clouded our judgement to what the true potential is, a collaborative effort, as it should be.
