if something is close but off I often split stems and then mix the original in too and then tweak the eq on each stem, the original is like a wet dry mix and then if you use the extreme points on the eq to lowpass and highpass to keep the waveform clean you can (generally this is all it needs) subtly boost the bass and treble, then monitor the volume indicator at the bottom of studio while playing it back to see where you're near-clipping by the orange color and adjust the mix
