I've also been a Dungeon Master for D&D Games for 30 years.
Insofar as my method. I'm very much a top down kind of writer. I start with an idea for a crisis or event and then build a world or story around it.
But, there is also the bottom up approach where you just have a cool world and build a plot to justify its existance.
