I was wondering how updates to the server are handled when a new one becomes available via steam as I am new to hosted game servers? Is this something that I can initiate or track progress on so I know when to start the server back up again?

The servers will be updated automatically. Sometimes, if you don't see that the server was updated, you can shut off the server, verify game files, then restart and it should go through.

OK, so by automatically, would someone take down the server while no one is online and then update it and bring it back up?

Not exactly. When the update is out, the servers will just update.

Oh I guess I don't know how that will work. If it is a steam supplied update doesn't the server need to be off to apply?

Not always. It depends on the type of update.
