#Character progression should be independent of specific hosts

To be honest, the current multiplayer system feels a bit silly. Being forced to bind your progress to one specific player really limits the gameplay. You can clearly see other ship cores out there on the horizon, but they’re completely useless if you’re stuck in a tethered session.

I’d suggest allowing character data to be saved independently—after all, we already have character creation, right? Players should be able to bring their characters between their own solo worlds and other people's worlds. You could even add a toggle for world owners to decide if guests can bring in outside progress or if they must start fresh. This would solve the frustration of not being able to play just because the host is offline.

In the long run, for this to feel like a "complete" game, every player needs to be able to explore independently.

I was thinking the exact same thing. The Valheim/Terraria approach. The current game design doesnt mesh with the minecraft save system it currently uses.

--------NEW IDEA: An alternative "lite" version of this seperate character saves idea that doesnt bring the issue of cutting files in two and losing progress in friends' games:

#

Keep INVENTORY tied to individual SERVERS, but have UNLOCKS be tied to character PROFILES

#

This includes:

  1. Recipes
  2. Talents and Level
  3. A new wardrobe system where instead of equipping armor items into your fashion slots, you unlock them for cosmetic use permanently when you first equip them or something. Regardless of hiw they're unlocked, your fashion options carry over between games regardless of world progress, and dont require the actual item.

Hey, that’s a really nice suggestion, we’ll see what we can do with it in the future!

I'm gonna bump this one. Seriously going to inhibit replayability if people have to grind up from the bottom every time. This is going to hinder the adoption and acceptance of the game. If people can build their characters and invest in them they will likely be more invested in making the game a social one with pickup style gaming between groups of friends. As it stands now if I can't bring my character with me to another game, I'm going to press through the progression one time and step away from the game for several months to a year and it will just fall in to "oh, let's see what else they added" rather than being one of the games that remains live in my library.

I think that this is one of the most crucial changes that you can make to the game. If this doesn't come out very soon the fresh wave of enthusiasm for the game is going to die, your simultaneous player count will die down after the first months wave, and the game will likely have a much harder time building active excitement for whatever the devs drop down the road because people will be off playing other things instead.

Right? How dad's gonna get gaming time in with their friends if they have to grind up every time?

could have what teraria and enshrouded does and that your personal inventory and unlocks are tied to a charcter rather then the world

but everything else is story progression related

Honestly, even if the inventory doesn't carry, the grind to unlock skills and recipes is the thing. If I can make the sword I can make on one server on my friend's server I'm set. It would probably be better if no inventory transferred

yeah you cant have a game like this and no individual character saves

#

also make it so people dont spawn on the host but where they last logged off if continuing a save

Needs to be fixed so that it can happen as with unlimited tethering it makes no sense to still spawn on the host, you both cant have ships so makes a very slow progression for the people that join the game and limits the functions of the game as a whole ...this will be needed for dedicated servers
