Because low points look bad and that's not fair to people who already are at a disadvantage for backfilling. Old school games almost always displayed the time played. Modern games usually either don't have a straight scoreboard or there is some other value to put it in relation to, like number of deaths.
At the very least it should somehow mark on the scoreboard if somebody was backfilling. This is a very minor thing of course, certainly not a priority.
I like the some sort of the backfilling indicator instead of the one more column with the time played because it can overwhelm the table imo
