POLL: Should Rematch Add a Dedicated Goalkeeper Role?
Hey everyone,
With Rematch dropping soon, there’s been a growing discussion about whether the game should include a Dedicated Goalkeeper (GK) Role or Queue — and I wanted to get a pulse from the community.
Right now, goalkeeping works as “rush GK,” where the nearest player just drops back temporarily. That fits the fast, open design of Rematch, but some of us (myself included) really want to commit to being a proper keeper. Playing as a full-time GK brings a unique satisfaction — reading plays, making clutch saves, commanding the back line. But without a system that supports it, you're just hoping your teammates let you do your thing.
Some say adding roles goes against Rematch's core philosophy where everyone is free to roam, attack, and defend — but I think there's a balance to be found. Maybe it’s as simple as offering a dedicated GK and a few “soft role” preferences for the rest of the pitch, like “mostly defend” or “mostly attack.” It wouldn’t restrict anyone, but it would make teamwork and expectations a lot cleaner — especially in Ranked.
Two Main Options for Dedicated GK
1. Pre-Match GK Queue
Before matchmaking, you tick “Play as Goalkeeper.” You’re then locked into that role once the match starts.
Bonus: Hold a button mid-match to return to rush GK mode — perfect for casual matches.
2. In-Lobby “Become GK” Button
During the pre-game walkout, hit a button to “Become GK.” This signals your intent to the team without locking roles too early. Simple and low-pressure.
Pros and Cons of a Dedicated GK Role
Pros:
- Allows GK mains to fully commit to the role
- Improves team coordination, especially in Ranked
- Adds more depth and structure to gameplay
- Optional implementation won’t impact casuals
Cons:
- Could slow down matchmaking slightly
- Trolls might pick GK and abandon the role
- May be seen as against the game’s core fluidity
- Risk of players getting stuck in a role without team support
Other Role-Related Ideas
- GK Zone Restriction: Dedicated GKs could be limited to their half or box
- Soft Role Preferences: Choose “mostly defend” or “mostly attack” — not locked, just guidance
- Ranked Role Queue Only: Structure for serious play while keeping casual mode freeform
- Hybrid Queue System: Just two options — In Goal or Outfield — clean and effective
- Goalkeeper "Dibs" Coms Voice line?: Maybe a Voice line that says "I'll go in" or the clasic "CHANGES!"
My Take
I’d love to see this tested. Make it optional, maybe for Ranked or Custom matches. Worst case, it doesn’t catch on and can be removed. Best case, it gives Rematch a layer of coordination and structure — and gives GK mains a proper place in the game.
Personally, I also don’t think the game needs a full role system. In my opinion, there are only two real positions: in goal and outfield. Anything more than that seems unnecessary unless someone can make a strong case. A simple toggle between “Play as GK” and “Play outfield” would be enough, keeping the rest of the game fluid and accessible.
What do you think?
* Yes – Add a dedicated GK role
* No – Keep rush style and open play
💭 * Maybe – Only if it’s optional or for Ranked

No - In my opinion Keep it open play
A dedicated GK role sounds cool until someone locks it and just stands there trolling — or worse, blames the team while doing nothing. Right now, everyone shares the job, and that works way better. It keeps the game flowing, fun, and unpredictable.
If anything, we just need better comms like “I got goal,” not locked roles that could be abused.
until someone locks it and just stands there trolling
Tbh I did already say that
Cons:
...Trolls might pick GK and abandon the role
but maybe it'll work with a "vote kick off role" system
But like I said I've seen a few people ask for it so I just wanted to give it a space to make this it's own dedicated talking post
dedicated roles wouldnt ever realistically be added. The only thing they might actually think about as a possibility would be in the pregame screen , or in between goals, you can click something that says I want to start as keeper. nothing about the gameplay changes, its just where you start after a goal or the start of the game. if someone else presses it too, whoever hasnt been GK yet would take the spot
That sounds like a good middle ground as well to be honest. Having the option to. "Always spawn in goal" that pairs nicely with my suggestion of during the team walk on screen where you can see your team. Maybe something popping up saying I want to play goalkeeper.
I think there should be something
Yes please at least goalkeeper, game will be unbalanced without a goalkeeper player or if 5 gk join fhe room
No, one of the main features of the game is that anyone can be goalkeeper
which is why what i said above should be the in between, no gameplay change, just spawnpoint change
Im of the opinion there should be no role Q at all. 5 a side football has no set positions and players just need to learn to be flexible and be part of a team.
I believe the way the game is currently played with rather static "roles" like staying on the left side of the field when spawned there or staying on defense all game are going to fall to the wayside as the game picks up steam and players game IQ increases. Something to consider is that this is a game of possession so keeping that in mind is very important. This being said I think the "roles" that people are talking about are going to shake out to be rather dynamic including GK. Agressive GK pusing to the end of the box for a risky slide grab knowing that one of his team mates is standing in the net ready to take over the mantel if he misses. Same idea for outfield where defence and offence are rotational while playing to grab the ball off a slide tackle or a poke. While I would think that in the highest levels of play there are going to be more dedicated GK players as they hyper specialize because I do believe it to be the hardest role. Within ranked or casual play I would only really want a quick chat for I want to play GK or something. Allowing this option for custom games would be a good idea for tournaments/10 mans with the boys. Splitting Q with dedicated GK Q is by far the worst of the proposed options so I won't even address it further. Alternatively the allowing someone to accept full time GK in the pregame color seelct or when rolling out before first spawn could be okay. My personal issue with this is that having the 5 seconds at the start of the match where you need to rotate around could lead to many interesting moments... IE scrambles where your non GK player has to play it for 1 push/breakaway and the team has to buy time to either try to get the swap done or let the player finish the 1 play as GK. I feel that there are advantages to allowing something like this, however I feel the negatives are not worth it. If what has been said is true that the devs have confirmed something like this is coming then I hope it might be readdressed in the future.
Great points — let me try to break it down for others who might’ve got lost in the weeds, then I’ll give my take.
Summary of the @fallow sandal Perspective:
They’re basically saying:
- As players get better, strict roles like “stay left side” or “always defend” won’t matter as much — everyone will rotate naturally based on the flow of the game.
- The GK role, like others, should be dynamic, not fixed. If the keeper rushes out, someone else can step in. No need to hard-lock that.
- In high-level games, people will specialize anyway — without needing a formal GK system.
- A simple quick-chat or signal ("I’ll play GK") is enough — no need for role queues or locks.
- They don’t like the idea of splitting queues for GKs. It would hurt matchmaking and overcomplicate things.
- They do like the idea of maybe tapping a GK button during the pre-game rollout — but even that could remove some fun and chaos in early-game scramble moments.
My Take:
I agree with a lot of that — especially that Rematch shines when it’s free-flowing and spontaneous. But I still think a lightweight, optional GK system could help — especially for Ranked or sweaty lobbies.
Here’s why:
- Clarity from the Start: Even if it’s just a little icon in the pre-game walkout showing who wants to be GK, it helps your team coordinate and avoid early-game confusion.
- Pre-Match “I’m GK” Button = Less Frustration: If I commit to keeper and someone else rushes back and blocks my view or tries to “take over,” it creates chaos. Locking in doesn’t mean rigid gameplay — it just avoids accidental overlap.
- Sweeper Keeper Swaps Can Still Happen: Even with a dedicated GK, I think a temporary “covering GK” status could still work. Like — your keeper rushes out, you step in, and if they don’t make it back in time, the game recognizes the new player as GK. It doesn’t need to be one-or-the-other forever.
- Role Queue Doesn’t Have to Kill Matchmaking: It could be as simple as a soft preference or GK toggle within the current queue. I don’t think we’d need a whole separate system — just something lightweight that supports coordination.
In short: I’m not asking for rigid FIFA-style positions. Just a way to tell your team, “I’ve got the gloves on,” and maybe get a little protection from chaos — especially in Ranked.
Let’s keep the core Rematch vibe, but I don’t think light structure hurts.
But I feel like we mostly agree something is better then nothing
Love the breakdown ty for that one! as a final note on this I do agree that so something in pregame is the best option that is a fully opt in approach not as an automatic system. This avoids all the potential q time disruptions and still allows for the clarity that sounds like is the most desired.
Bingo!
