Right click β Symbolleisten β
I am not really sure it's useful but at least I now know what it is π
They dropped that in win 11 though. Would have actually been nice to expand it with cmd or windows terminal etc
Yeah, I don't think it's useful
going WIN + E β quick access is faster
or directly pinning the folder
Perhaps it's good they dropped it π
btw. I just discovered recently that "Opening Files with one click" is actually much nicer than double clicking π
mmm, i just pin applications to taskbar and favorite files i often access, or pin the files on file explorer on the task bar
i really like that feature
im excited to test out w11
Same.
I recently tried to add .sqf and .ext to the context menu β new, but it seems that windows doesn't like that =/
the greatest downfall of current windows, don't have full control :(
all I want is the access to break all the things accidentally
Just wipe all entries with regEdit π
nope, windows will not give away their privilege to break your things without asking π
I wonder whether UE5 and such technologies will be so much more advanced at some point that Enfusion too becomes essentially deprecated before it has reached even v1.0
If I had more resources, I'd seriously consider making an Arma-like game on UE5 with its new streaming system (--> huge maps) and other cool stuff
it would be "the next Arma killer" number 73156 that never sees light of day π If it was so easy, someone would have already done it.
You can't predict the future by just looking at the past.
What I was referring to is that technologies like UE5 seem to be developing at much, much faster rate than e.g. Enfusion. Then we do the math and come to conclusion that the extra possibilities offered by UE5 might pass its limitations in terms of technical value at some point, making UE5/UEX better option for even an exceptional game like Arma
I consider the new map/terrain streaming system of UE5 to basically destroy one of the last lines of defense that Arma series has had against possible competitors
Squad already does infantry fighting hugely better than Arma, but the vehicles and the maps aren't on equal level in quality - yet. The performance is also generally excellent
Just need to perfect the vehicle gameplay and add those huge maps achieved with the new streaming technology. And boom, there we have our Arma killer
E.g. even I - despite of being a hardcore Arma fan - don't really play Arma anymore. If I want to play FPS, I always open Squad
And play limited mods/missions types.
In Arma when you're bored, you simply switch to another server with another game mod.
In other games, you have to switch to another game
And there us no editor in other games to invent to infinite new game mods and do whaever you want - you have to stick to few game mods available and to few maps and factions and armament available, unlike in Arma, where you can make new maps, factions, armaments YOURSELF
Yes, that wasn't my point though
I know
ahem
You guys do know that you can both be correct, right? π
But this is what still compensates for outdated graphics and shitty netcode, hits registration and physics and sound
If it wasn't for the editor and mods, Arma would already have lost to some other games
Considering all the problems Arma has
And what happens when those other games add an editor and proper scripting language? π
Lets see this being done
Everything I've seen of Squad is it's full of elitist knobs, way way more than Arma. It's most likely one of the reasons it has low player numbers
https://discord.com/developers/docs/topics/threads
Discord is adding "Threads" feature... oof
Integrate your service with Discord β whether it's a bot or a game or whatever your wildest imagination can come up with.
I suppose this is gonna work like in slack
looks at channel list... imagine each channel had threads too... oh dear god...
yeah its gonna suck
discord: you know what would be a great idea? Giving spam bots more real estate to spam in π
But it looks like server owners can give people permission to create threads. So we just won't
Ooh thats good
if there was a personal sticky board in discord with usefull messages that you could drag and drop for personal safe keeping - that i would find neat. But threads in public spaces? hm... eh... Its hard enough to demand disciplined use of the channels xD
Ye
and from my experience with slack, it just turns into a mess of people both using threads and not using them
and usually threads also suck to navigate a lot more than a normal chat

Insane
omg windows 10 is so retarded
it uses a locked CPU frequency when I log on
even tho my power plan specifically says use variable frequency
the only way to fix it is to change plans
I made a task to change the power plan to a temp one at log on, and then another task to switch to the main one 30s after log on.
Is that bad? does anyone know a better way?
wait nvm. it still gets bugged after a while and doesn't change the frequency. wtf
Never had any issues with that.
yes
Note that if you plug in a laptop to an ac power source it might do this
Based on how the manufacturer switches the powerplans
Ive seen lots of laptops do this
Dell specifically, its how dell or any other manufacturer has it setup with their own way of powerplan switching in windows
My problem is that the frequency is not the max (turbo) frequency. It's not even the base frequency
It just gets locked on some frequency (probably the last frequency) after a while
I'll investigate this later.
Yeah we had this at work as well
i know what you mean
At work it was because of using ac adapters that were not suited for the power draw by the laptop
then it just locks the frequency
nope that's not it.
- I use the original adapter
- It can draw enough power to reach the turbo frequency if I change the power plan and put it on Best Performance
but I don't want it to use the max frequency all the time. only when I need it. but after a while something goes wrong and the frequency stops updating.
so it's either a driver bug or windows bug
I'd probably use Intel XTU to monitor what's up with the CPU
if you have an intel device of course
i would go for a hardware solution...
solder potentiometer to cpu power supply, turn down the voltage if you want quiet, turn to eleven if you want power!11
I don't see my CPU on its list
Me too although I am totally sure it worked for my CPU previously.
anyway you can use it for monitoring temperature and cpu frequency
wait speaking of intel...I just thought of something...
ah crap, now I can't undervolt my CPU any more:
https://securityboulevard.com/2019/12/plundervolt-a-new-intel-processor-undervolting-vulnerability/
what a stupidity π€¦ββοΈ
huh. looks like intel CPPC was on when it was plugged in
I disabled it
let's see if it stops updating again after a few minutes.
I am going through a windows reinstall. I wonder in what year we will have windows automatically install correct drivers for hardware
A nice addon for Firefox:
Tree Style Tab
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tree-style-tab/
Lists your tabs in a side bar in a tree view, so links opened from a page are listed as under that page.
omg that would be such a mess π
I gotta try that
That is magestic! Not sure how many times I moved from page to page and lost where I started
Got Vertical Tabs in Edge for some time now. Pretty useful
i need to make a habit of just having less tabs open... putting tabs im more containes wont help me there
Kinda dislike the lack of horizontal screen real-estate tho...
Buy a bigger screenπ€£
Same issue different aspect ratio
π©
But a wider screen then π
i extended my space for tabs by putting a monitor left and right of the current... now of course i wont find a tab easily between all the browser window, so instead of looking for the tab among 3 windows and hundreds of tabs, i google for the page...
Hmm that's a good idea for a browser addon, search bar for the tab list
just having less tabs seems like a more practical way... it just requires one to be .. tidy. Not my strong suit
Who needs tidy if you can also just master the chaos
Less tabs means there is no satisfaction when cleaning it all up by clicking "Close all Tabs to the right" π
oh no, but there could be one treasure you might lose
... i started chrome on a blank tab and it immediately starts using 40-100% of my CPU (i7 - 9700K)... and not just for a few seconds, it keeps going. wtf is it doing?
apparently a so called "software reporting tool" started investigating my PC ... despicable
haha yes
I deinstalled chrome when I figured same thing
It was even worse, I had a pretty slow SSD and chrome was using all SSD's bandwidth to scan my whole C drive
so my whole PC was totally ded
Google must know that no software interrupts the surfing experience
ironically it interrupts the surfing experience itself
needed chrome for a netflix group watch plugin... only exception i have to use chrome for
Thats chrome scanning every file on your pc for maliciousness,. the only way around it is to disable the program from running completely,. if you delete it, chrome will reinstall it.
that maliciousness, is software that may not work properly with chrome itself
this guide will completely nuke it from functioning - https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/disable-software-reporter-tool.html
I suggest dumping chrome anyay, because of their upcoming tracking updates which you can not even opt out. I think Edge is the better option atm of you want basically the same browser but not as greedy
yeah i nuked chrome now. Whats that about the tracking?
Using Edge ever since it has been released. Super satisfied with it!
Microsoft curates the trackers / 3rd party cookies they allow in Edge, while its better than Chrome, they aren't an innocent party either.
I wanted to switch to Brave a while ago, but they did an Oopsie with injecting brave tracking and referrals without telling the users
I'll stick with Firefox π
because of their upcoming tracking updates which you can not even opt out.
I read nothing about any sort of new tracking updates that you cannot opt out and that would make the browser so much worse that you want to switch away from it?
All google said is that what they planned to do, they couldn't manage in time and are now delaying onto a new date.
Forbes talks about a idea that google has, being bad for other advertisers while not harming google.
Yes business wise thats shit, but I don't see why a user would care that facebook now cannot track them anymore, but google still can
the same google who already has all your emails and phone tracking data and youtube history anyway... so why care that they can also show you targeted ads which you ad-block anyway
The problem that chrome allows third party cookies is not new.
Safari blocked it in 2017, Firefox in 2019, Chrome delayed it to 2022.
But thats not really anything new
And if you want them off, you can just turn them off in the options. Don't see an issue with that
Oh I understood that the tracking ID was forced onto me.
I've been using FF for so long I can't even remember what version I started with lol. Think it might have been v1.0... solved so many issues at the time as IE was awful
I don't really understand why FF has such a low marketshare. If something did not work in other browsers, FF always did the trick for me. But I don't like its current design and layouting. I am glad Edge is doing fine . Finally a pre-installed piece of software that I don't have to replace.
firefox became aweful/suspect the moment it tried to become chrome... imo. Switched to a fork
You could also try chromium instead of chrome
too much Cr in it
If you're able to, you could convince your colleagues to use metastream instead of the chrome only Netflix watching extension
it is cross compatible, open source, but buggy when changing videos
Chrome delayed it to 2022
They actually delayed it till at least 2022, setting no firm deadline for having 3rd party cookies blocked, by which time google will have invented another method they can force upon users to sustain their main stream of revenue, advertising.
I use TONS of google services, and if they make the money with Ads that I don't care about and don't look at, instead of billing me. Then I'm more than happy with that
Doesn't change the fact that chrome is trash
tbh with some extra extensions, chrome works pretty well for me
and the majority of extensions is to cover edge cases
like something being super quiet, or chrome crashing without being able to save the open tabs
Using Firefox since 2004-2005 )
I think its that firefox tree tabs extension thing.
When I open link in new tab with middle click, it doesn't open in next tab, it jumps like 10 tabs to the right and opens it there
Yes its that tab thing.
If you open new tab, it puts it at the end of the current tree item.
So if you already opened 3 tabs from current tab, and open a new one it doesn't go into the next slot but the last slot instead.
Absolute showstopper
AH! fixable!
Dang that thing has lots of options
Oh that's nice, it annoyed me a bit as well
More the fact that it jumped around visually that it got opened at an unusual place
seems another OSS bites the dust https://appleinsider.com/articles/21/07/04/open-source-audacity-deemed-spyware-over-data-collection-changes
it's a shame whats happening to Audacity, as a FOSS project it should never be used to harvest user data for any reason, this is under the guise of Data necessary for law enforcement, litigation and authoritiesβ requests (if any) and is baseless, I'd hedge a bet on them wanting to track that data for monetisation or future asset sale in regard to Audacity itself, user-data harvesting is a revenue stream these days after all.
ain't first ain't last, let's hope someone fork it and name that LibreAudio and get some new dev team together la LibreOffice

another cloud service to trust , right ? https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/214781504184778752/861993834506092554/Screenshot_20210706-113410_Outlook.jpg , https://www.itnews.com.au/news/linkedin-denies-data-breach-with-700-million-records-566707
Question is, were these public information?
Because other than "Social media usernames" (which are probably not the ones you use to log in) these information are probably set to public for most ppl.
no as that would be no news
Installing Windows 11 now
well everything leaked were info visible to anybody registered in LinkedIn. People tend to set their data visibility to contacts of your contacts so it's basically public
Firefox did so many things wrong over time including but not limited to closing their threat management team
Literally the best thing one can do is just switch to a chromium based browser security wise
Do you guys have any idea how I can make a batch file run a .exe on multiple files?
you can use the for loop in CMD. for example:
FOR /F "tokens=1* delims=. " %%A in ('dir /b *.png') do (
if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto err
)
this is an example of what I use to batch convert pngs to paas:
@echo off
MD converted
FOR /F "tokens=1* delims=. " %%A in ('dir /b *.png') do (
"E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma 3 Tools\ImageToPAA\ImageToPAA" %%A.png converted\%%A.paa
if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto err
)
Hmmm, alrighty thank you
For example how does bankrev extract these mass amounts of pbos?
Like what would a bat look like for that?
I haven't used bankrev, but you can try:
@echo off
FOR /F "tokens=1* delims=. " %%A in ('dir /b *.pbo') do (
"E:\Steam\steamapps\common\Arma 3 Tools\bankrev\bankrev" %%A.pbo
if ERRORLEVEL 1 goto err
)
change E:\Steam to your own steam path
I don't know if it works at all, because I'm not familiar with bankrev command line params
ok figured it out
fixed
Hm, just puts my cursor into the windows loading symbol, nothing in CMD though
did you use your own Arma 3 Tools path?
Yeah I did
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
I've tested it and it works
have you run Arma 3 Tools and accepted the EULA?
Hmmm, strange alrighty Ill see what I can do and yes I have

Valve is adding some new hardware reservation options, wonder if that's for new hardware.
They will be able to do reservation deposits and limit reservations to accounts in good standing and accounts that aren't too new.
Yesterday one of our IT guys at the company misclicked one checkbox when working on windows policies. And it caused every user of the company world wide to be locked out of every application. AMD released the FSR source code under their GPUOpen initiative - https://github.com/GPUOpen-Effects/FidelityFX-FSR
for Arma wen?!
it's a little late for Arma 3 I'd say, but for any future engines/titles it has very little drawbacks from my pov.
possibly also useful for people that have 4k monitors but reduce the rendering resolution to 50%
Just make a ticket I'll assign dedmen to it π
if you have 4k monitor, how have you not a GPU that can run arma at 4k? That also means you likely cant run most other 3D games at 4k either
Perhaps you want it for work but can't afford decent gpu π
maybe they just got it for watching movies! π
Even 3090 SLI would be unable to run 4k arma with a playable framerate in a real game scenario and not empty editor
then just move the screen further away, and you wont see the difference π
Can you even run Arma with playable framerate at any resolution π€£
really? o0 what games can you even play in 4K at playable framerate without spending a cars worth on graphical accelerators
also, is that an assumption or do you know? Because Arma is mostly cpu bound.
Minesweeper π₯
^only the 95 version though. 98 is too advanced

If they really wanted to sell Win11 they would have brought back minesweeper and pinball
Anyway I am getting off topic π
That is why ... you need the fastest singlecore cpu you can get ... anything else is irrelevant
well that to me seems like a flawed assumption. More Resolution doesnt mean more CPU demand
4k is quite demanding by itself to be driven with 144hz. i doubt any cpu would be up to the task atm. i have a 3080ti and 2k monitor and i am not seeing the results i would want ... even though its not the latest one a 8700k@5.2 ghz should be able to do better - and it does in any other game that is not arma
starts embracing dayz and its better renderer again
144hz and 4k... who says 144hz...
anything under 120hz is giving me a bad time ngl ... once you are beyond 60hz for a while you do not go back
As in I refuse to play games that limit me to 60fps that are not story tellers
so, i guess, you dont play arma then?
the point is - 4k and 144Hz is not a problem in Arma I THINK (with the right GPU), IF you already can get 144Hz at 2K or 1K with the same processor and a worse GPU.
I have not played arma in years, i only use it as my sandbox for modding.
I don't think that is so simple, because the game has to push bigger framebuffers which takes quite a bit of processing power
hence i said, no matter how much gpu you have arma 3 at 4k with "playable" framerates is a myth imo
which is why i went for 2k monitor. that is the sweetspot for crisp imagine and playable frames
run at 1k resolution for test and see what the framerate is vs. 2k. If you dont get much difference -> you can run at 4k with same cpu i recon

only have Windows ARM64 dev environment on my Apple M1 laptop and sometimes the remote desktop at home isn't available
arma 3 plays fine on 4k with decent gpu
cpu is still ur bottleneck
i've been doing 4k for a few years now
and if u dont like playing under 120hz, don't know how you'd play arma3 at all lol

If you are an engineer, or want to do physics simulations by graphical modelling (circuits, logic networks, mechanics, ...), OpenModelica is an extremely powerful tool that is not really widely known. It takes some time getting used to and there are not many tutorials for it though.
The only commercial competitor (Simscape from Mathworks) stole the ideas and sells you a license for a mere 3k β¬ / year (cause you need Matlab + Simulink + Simscape), previously it was even 6k
Gimp, Files, Inkscape to just name a few
Regarding CAD, FreeCAD is nice for mechanical engineering introduction, it's like a basic version of SolidWorks

its kind of scary... To me it just looks like they lure people to their eco system with aggressive marketing and free stuff and (admittedly very good) "free" engine, cheap licenses etc. When they continue that for another 5 years until most people adopted their ecosystem, and competition no longer exists. And then they tighten the thumb screws... increased royalty % etc.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRfWWLyGDRU Time to cut some limbs (Dead Space Remake Trailer)
Check out the official teaser trailer for the Dead Space remake announced at EA Play Live 2021 in 4K.
while cool! its quite alarming that we get so much remakes of old titles instead of new games
It's because of the entry barrier to the industry that has massively increased (and keeps increasing), though the advancing of the available tools has compensated it quite a lot too
There's even a book that reveals the sad math behind the ever increasing percentage of remakes and sequels in the film (and game) industry
something along "original designs are too expensive to come up with and market" ?
(Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions by Brian Christian β btw, highly recommend the book)
Basically the AAA games are so expensive to make that studios don't want to risk their existence by innovating too much and producing a possible flop with a budget that would basically kill the studio in case of the game actually did flop
And it's a perfectly rational decision. A very unpleasant one for us gamers, but rational from the perspective of the game/film studios
indeed
But the book goes deeper into the subject, highly recommend
I'm starting to sound like a commercial but you can even save huge amounts of money with the book, as it covers eg. the math of real estate stuff. You can calculate the best timing and price pair (?) to buy or sell a house with the algorithms that the book reveals
Or rather, maximize your chances to make an optimal decision as it's about probability
Also as a sidenote, as someone that hasnt played dead space I'd personally quite like remakes of the games
so I can experience the game and story but in an 'upgraded' format
although that applies more to older games, as afaik the existing ds games are still very well playable
fortunately when a gamedev studio wants to resurrect it's IP at least they tend to do remakes instead of remasters, the latter are usually... bad
Can't say that about the Resident Evil ones
RE 3 Remake is just bad, Remaster of the first one is nice and the remake of the 2nd part is awesome as well.
sad Warcraft 3: Reforged noises
although the ds1 of remake has at least a bit of remaster n it too, with the 'improved story' and all

did someone of you ever experience windows just using 100% of a disk? because that is happening to me now and I don't see any program that could be at fault
yes.
is it System that's causing that?
most likekly
I've had it happening to me in these cases (iirc)
- windows update
- disk cleanup/maintenance stuff
- running nearly out of disk space
- prefetch/superfetch
oh I think it just finished what it was doing for hours
yes the drive that is at 100% active time is an hdd but my windows drive is an pcie 4.0 m2 ssd
running chkdsk now
if you have a maintenance task or have disk defrag run on schedule it's very likely
my other guess was OneDrive but that should show as its own process
or my drive was just encrypted and after the next restart I'll be asked for bitcoin Β―_(γ)_/Β―
restarted the computer and it's at it again...
you might be able to see what's going on using procmon
already using it but can't quite figure out how to use it
set it to only show file activity
and enable auto scroll
also filter out programs that you think are not the culprit
check in resource monitor? that tells you which program accesses which file
yeah that too
oh it looks like it is fighting with a onedrive file
okay that was the problem. For some reason onedrive wanted to create copy of a file that already existed and the system just choked on it
?
I only update every few months
I use OneDrive to backup my important files
Well I kind of get your point but I think that installing updates is really important regarding security
I stopped having constant crashes in apps and games after I started taking care of security
if windows lets you update π© I had to reinstall Windows for the latest one because it just failed everytime I restarted the PC
Mmm
I tried Windows 11, it got me stuck in a restart loop and had to reinstall Win10 again. But it's understandable since it's still in beta
yeah it kinda happened to me too one time. thankfully I managed to save it.
but since then I never let windows update by itself
at one point it updated one of my drivers without my consent and broke many things...
be careful with indev versions. I read one report where a user lost all his data
I did as well, cba to save the data that I had since it wasn't that important (the important stuff had backups ofc) π
oh no it's at 100% again and no OneDrive active
also no file accessed according to resmon
oh boy just 100% active time but no reads or writes
sorry, i'm just browsing your hdd... dont mind me
maybe your drive is malfunctioning?
it's switching between that and 0
can you even open the drive?
finally solved it. there were more broken files. also moved onedrive to an ssd
and it only took 2 hours π
thanks for the help @boreal urchin and @open hedge
Okay so I stream our units Ops on a regular basis and i just started using OBS (i was using my GPUs built in thing to stream to twitch). I see this option to switch to a hardware encoder. Is that recommended or should i stick with the software option?
hardware encoder is recommended for sure (nvidia). for AMD you have to test what has less impact / best results
@lunar nimbus
good to know. I feel like with Arma it will get iffy.
i have AMD
me too, this is why i have a second PC for stream encoding using my old NVIDIA π€£
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1087136668 I mean this is the software encoding on my rig rn. i'm far away from anything actually happening
not plugging my twitch, just providing context π
and what's the load on your CPU?
yknow i've haven't checked in a while. i'd say 25%?
oof
max 40% depending whats going on
yeah
well its arma so
but i haven't checked in a while. i'm streaming tonight so i'll have task manager open and look
i mean what's the load of OBS when streaming and software encoding
oh. that i don't know. i will look tonight π
what are your settings in OBS?
which ones?
gimme a sec
video: resolution, filter, FPS
output (stream): CBR or VBR, bitrate, profile
output (audio): audio bitrate
Video
Resolution: (Base Canvas, Output Scaled) 1920x1080
Filter: Bicubic (sharpened Scaling, 16 samples
Common FPS Value: 60
Output (Stream:)
Video Bit Rate: 6000 kpbs
Encoder: (Software x264)
Audio Bitrate: 160
wait hold on it was on simple mode. lemme know if you need more numbers lol
simple mode is fine
for twitch (and if your connection allows it) you can push 6500k, maybe even 7000k bitrate
you can lower audio to 128
1200mpbs dn/ 30 (sometimes 40) up
π
i've had issues where too high doesn't provide a picture or something
it's weird.
oh because twitch only allows 6k
twitch usually caps between 6000k and 7000k. if you push above that, they simply deny it all together
unless you'Re a partner π
which naw
~11%
thats what it said at the bottom of OBS while streaming
software or hardware encoded?
software
is there anyone using vim for sqf development?

Might sound stupid, but how do I permanently disable windows defender on latest windows 10 pro? All the previous regedit tricks no longer work... :/
maybe someone has invented a dummy program which registers as an antivirus and just does nothing? π€
Why would you want to disable it though?
avast? π
I like my fans quiet
lool you should here my pc, it groans like mad π
antivirus software are viruses
seriously as long as you stay off shady websites and not download anything illegally, windows defender is legit good enough
Windows Defender is the best AV there is currently
I don't mind it completely, I'm fine to run it when I need it, and not when it intrusively runs wherever it decides it's a good time to scan my whole PC, or slows down my PC start up
try making a powershell script
Set-MpPreference -DisableRealtimeMonitoring $true
and put it in your startup folder.
generally i find the best way to disable windows 10 garbage "features" with PS scripts i find on github
thanks! does it still work?
I mean, are you sure that recent updates didn't break this way of disabling it?
My guess is that the malware that'd get into your PC will cause more spinning of fans than the AV itself
But well, who knows
Β―_(γ)_/Β―
Don't remember when I had it last time
when safety measures cause too much annoyance VS the chance of the event they are supposed to prevent they make no sense
like, would you like to unlock 6 locks instead of one before entering your apartment
and put on a bulletproof vest before leaving home?
Nope, but I prefer to have a lock in my door π
he can get a normal AV that dosnt hold your system hostage. or just not download malware. Whichever is more preferable to him. and thats implying windows defender does anything to protect his computer against malware in the first place
Dont know about latest version of win 10. I always stay back a few versions that i consider most stable
But simple to test
WD feels like six locks to me

Anyway my one friend told me about this bot called Libertas. It's amazing it does everything that DynoBot and CarlBot does but even better. It even beats MEE6. Question for The Software developers here, Is there a notable difference of any kind when developing in Windows vs Linux.
Yes
Some common examples would be quite different filesystem, Linux file systems are more than often case sensitive and does not have any notion of drives, everything is just one tree. The tooling and toolchains can differ quite a bit depending on programming language. OS abstractions can be different as well.
Lets say you are developing in C# which operating system would you prefer and for which reason.
I'd use Visual Studio (not Code but actual Visual Studio) for that, so Windows
I'd prefer Linux using Visual Studio Code's C# extension. But that's because I switch between different languages in VSC and I like using Linux's package managers to manage my projects. I'd also use Visual Studio if I was already on Windows and only aimed to do C# work.
Interesting responses thx
Personally I use jetbrains rider for development with c# since recently and am pretty damn happy with it
Also obviously features pretty much all of ReSharper

Hello, I have a problem with Win 10, the problems are: 1. Windows always refreshing itself, whenever I do doesn't matter if I playing games/watching, 2. The same but it close apps such as windows explorer, making data transfer annoying and hard. What's the solution to this?
first of all, do a virus scan π
full/quick?
does anyone know how to make Windows 10's touch keyboard not close when I press a key on physical keyboard?
It should not close or minimize if your press a keyboard button. Just tested that now.
it closes for me
I mean this keyboard btw:
the on-screen keyboard doesn't hide, but it looks fugly

Well. Simple. You get a list of EVERY person who did a corona test, address, full name, email, birthdate (with timezone even), gender, phone number, even ID card numbers if provided.
And on top of that, you can create your own test results and get a valid "your test was negative" QR code without ever getting tested π

When I try to cancel some ancient Malwarebytes subscription (and expensive as well), the form gives an error. Continuing the auto-renewal (the button next to it) works normally, of course. I'm pretty sure that's intentional. Well, it just shows how a trash business they're nowadays
these companies always go that way, same happened with avast etc, they all just keep getting more and more bloated

Norton 360 anti-virus is literally a crypto-virus now.
https://community.norton.com/en/forums/faq-norton-crypto
The coin mining fee is currently 15% of the crypto allocated to the miner.
Transfers of cryptocurrencies may result in transaction fees (also known as "gas" fees) paid to the users of the cryptocurrency blockchain network who process the transaction. In addition, if you choose to exchange crypto for another currency, you may be required to pay fees to an exchange facilitating the transaction. Transaction fees fluctuate due to cryptocurrency market conditions and other factors. These fees are not set by Norton.
For users of Norton 360, not only will they be installing a crypto miner on your system by stealth, they'll charge you a 15% "mining fee" for any crypto mined on your own computer using it.
I mean it was already ransomware and a rootkit
nortons goal is to fight fire with fire, other virus's don't stand a chance against their own
WTH. Why would anyone use that?
No clue, regarding the crypto part - I saw a few other posts on social media about this, in one they claimed the crypto transfer fees were in the upper 40%s, that is on top of Symantec's mining fee of 15%.
It's a total scam, social engineering et al - using deception and peoples self-belief that they'll strike it rich in crypto, when the only people getting rich are the people tricking you into letting them use your hardware, electricity, etc to generate them crypto, aka Symantec/Norton.
And Avira have crypto-miner https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/daughter-company-norton-(avira-antivirus)-also-contains-cryptominer,2.html
the amount of time my laptop has 40% CPU utilization when the screen is locked (logon screen) due to windows defender activity isnt particularly reassuring either...

What happened to FF?
some new fancy tech not working as it should

so not a bug in firefox, they just suffer from bugs with the newer protocols in services such as google cloud load balancer and cloudflare
That would be why my wife has had issues all day! Mine's been ok, but I only really go on reddit / news
apparently firefox had a bug as well, https://phabricator.services.mozilla.com/D135871

Anyone have any recommendations for 3rd party fan control software?
I have been using Argus Monitor as it allows quite nice combinations of component temperatures to define fan speed from. (E.g. a combination of GPU, CPU and RAM).
However, the more recent releases (possibly combined with AMD Chipset updates) have resulted in a significant hit to memory latency when it's running. (E.g. nearly 3ns) So definitely not ideal to run while ARMA-ing...
@shrewd lynx I use this on on my work PC. Has been working very nicely since I am using it. Got a nice UI as well.
Don't suppose you've run an Aida64 memory benchmark to see how it affects latency, have you?
All other controllers I've tried so far have actually been quite similar to Argus. But was just wondering if you had any further info before I install it and give it a go!
No I didn't. You don't need to install it. It's just an executable, so just try it
Minimal (if any) effect on memory performance when running which is really good.
Love the configurability.
But haven't yet managed to get it to detect my RAM temps which is one of my key inputs to my cooling strategy.
Will keep playing but have run out of time to explore for the time being.

hi, can anyone help me with my pc i cant update windows and im not very good with my pc at the best of times any help would be greatly appreciated
why cant you update? are you getting error messages?
kind of yes
am i okay to post it here?
oh i cant

ive check the requirements and to my understanding i have all of them#]
You might want to ask on buildapc discord or techsupport on reddit. Most likely get help quicker on there
thanks dude will do that
yeah last time windows didnt let me update i reinstalled it
if i do that and it then doesnt reinstall will i be f**ked
I mean a reinstall would mean u lose everything on ya machine anyways unless u save it on a separate drive. Iβve ran into that so many times that I just bought a 500gb ssd to ONLY PUT windows and games on so if I had to reinstall I wouldnβt be too mad ab it
the windows license is coupled with your hardware id
(in case of an OEM license, not a microsoft account license)
yeah most of my to all of my games are on my 1tb D drive and my c drive still has 100gb left of freee space. even the guys on this help server im on cant make sense of it
You can do an "Upgrade in place" with Windows, which will reinstall the OS without affecting files within your user folders (documents etc).
I had to do this previously after MS broke Windows Update a few years ago and to fix that issue, outside of a full reinstall, an upgrade in place was the easiest & least disruptive option available.
There's a guide on how to do it - https://www.thewindowsclub.com/perform-windows-10-in-place-upgrade
the windows generic audio driver vs Realtek audio driver
which one is of higher quality, and has more features?
Im thinking of reverting to the windows driver
since realtek runs like ass
what is it with chrome using 80% of CPU for no reason
(im using Opera GX now)
probably something on the website you're on. I've moved on to Vivaldi since firefox has gone to shit. It's got an integrated adblocker that works perfectly!
chrome goes through your files... "virus check" they claim , cough cough stealing your information cough cough. The reason i banned it from my PC
Opera is one of the best or even the best in that regard, easy to use and its design allows to function on low-end gear too. Lowest rss usage out of all browsers I tested.
Chrome eats up a lot of performance the more tabs and stuff you have open. To my own experience, this usually goes worse if filled with too many active extensions and stuff running in background regardless of whether Chrome was open or not (close window = not always same like terminate app from running)
π€£ Well, Google offers free services in exchange of your data and some of them make you very addicted. Never heard Chrome offers virus check but would make sense since even old blockhead MS started to offer internet security free of charge and without any ad-spam together with Windows from start (which makes sense too since lot of people still "believe" they can run a system connected to inet without any security). And the surprising part: MS already dominates the free version market and their anti virus is not bad at all compared to other freewares. I think they are experimenting because HP earns shitload of money with their new cybersecurity solution for business customers
Opera is built on top of the same browser engine as Chrome, Chromium.
Any differences in user experience are just ux/ui differences.
it's like this, i just restart. connected to wifi and check taskmgr
https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/835854573766836244/946600378605129809/unknown.png
Never checked that deep but Opera manages to run with far lower usage of rss and I think this would matter a lot if people knew how to use google search to find non-google products π€£
no wonder im having lag issue in arma for no reason
Oh wtf, that is really high
Just checked how Netflix on Chrome responds to CPU, jumps from 0-0,6% to 5%
I have very few extensions too:
Ghostery, Kaspersky, Adobe and thats it
chrome not even turn on it literally autorun whenever my laptop starts
sooner or later i will uninstall chrome
Googles Chrome installs extra software that scans your files, you can move it to a restricted group that effectively blocks it accessing anything, since if you delete the scanner it will just download it again.
Thats what you get when you trust an ad company and huge data-hoarder to provide you with a browser
If you like, we may try one last thing:
- switch off background running; chrome settings => advanced => system => toggle off "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed"
- switch off autorun on win10; task manager now offers autorun list over there, either remove or disable it (no more need to go through cmd or windows configs)
i just kill the chrome in taskmgr, my cpu usage is normal now
There's a few ways, I just blocked it via permissions,. I only have chrome installed to test websites across browser versions, outside of that I dont use it.
That guide is speaking one of the same advice I just gave to Hazer but the regedit one is a mess. Chrome is not listed under policies. (Well, no wonder speaking of guide release 2018 and Google ain't sleeping, they either removed it voluntarily or replaced it with more creative solutions π€£ )
Vivaldi has pretty good performance now. I remember when it was really slow with tabs but now it's much more responsive. Handles big sessions really well. Vivaldi Vivaldi Vivaldi :D
Brainwashing π€£
They should update their own ad lol
I stopped looking at Vivaldi because they were heavily focused on macOS, Linux and Android but if they approach Windows, I have to compare this with Opera ofc
If you think of people just looking at Chrome, Edge or Firefox (more and more gargabe, sorry but Firefox messed up big time), it is no wonder Opera is considered underrated over years. Vilvaldi seems to get closer to Opera's best argument of lowest workload too.
Two rows of tabs (as in, tab groups and tabs under the selected group), and you can select how to organize them, and whether you want them to scroll or compress when there's too many to fit!
That feature would help certain people cheating their own web traffic π€£ sorry, I meant pushing ofc.
I remember one guy opening browser with more than 20 tabs preset just to trick traffic research tools. If a bunch of reviewers, bloggers and influencers open tab of each other, it generates fake traffic that apparently even helps with... Alexa was it? (Amazon is funny using same name for their Echo system and market research company...)

The German department for internet security warns of Kaspersky anti virus
https://www.bsi.bund.de/DE/Service-Navi/Presse/Pressemitteilungen/Presse2022/220315_Kaspersky-Warnung.html
Just funny they forgot to mention the obvious backdooring issues years ago when it was lucrative to use it but now talking about security concerns with top timing lol
Like if I care. Never used it anyway
I once usem them but they were better in the past, Bitdefender gained grounds
Used to use Kaspersky, it was pretty good product. Got rid of it sometime after crimea invasion, windows defender had become legit and russia relationship with US was getting pretty sketchy "again"
Windows defender was one of the very good ideas MS ever had, no ads, just kill the freeware market π
Kapersky still in use on local school
Yes, even vital parts of US Gov except military used Kaspersky a lot and they had lot of extra expenses just to change out of the blue.
I normally don't expect anything revolutionary from Windows but with the new head Nadella, quiet a few changed for the better or worse. Windows Defender was a game changer forcing all lazy paid providers to improve faster. I wouldn't be surprised if I end up with a paid solution from HP or Microsoft one day soon. Both of them show very interesting solutions which are sadly exclusive for business customers atm
Would be interesting to know how they ever ended up doing that π
I have interesting story about Kaspersky too
So back in the Arma 2 days I was working on on game design document for a RP gamemode. I had Kaspersky installed as AV because I didn't understand the risks and it was an effective one back then. Eventually, I downloaded the GDD from cloud on my desktop. Because the RPG was intended to take place on Chernarus, it contained a lot of potentially interesting keywords regarding Russia and inside jokes/memes about assassinating Putin etc. Right after downloading the GDD my PC went nuts. Kaspersky started to use 100 % of available CPU resources (which continued for about four days), and I noticed that something sent huge amounts of data (several hundreds of GBs) from my PC over the next few days too. I admit that I did a little test; I copied the GDD to an USB stick and attached to my friends' old PC (yeah, I was a jerk lol). Same result: firewall logged several hundred of GBs of data transmission over their network for the next couple of days π
It was about a year after that or so when it was confirmed (by Israel I think) that Kaspersky was cooperating with Russian intelligence services, possibly being forced to do that. I don't know whether it relates at all to what happened with that GDD, but I found it interesting
I really wonder about that too lol
Either they received free service to lure them or Russian vodka did the job π€£
I just remember USA pushed lot of IT companies to create backdoors in name of the patriot act. The first to fall was Facebook (Meta) but that doesn't surprise anyone because Zuckerberg shits his pants everytime Gov kicks him. Later Google and others followed after resisting a while because they are big but not as deeply connected as others. At the end just Microsoft refused till the end and even dared to threaten to sue them (If I learned one thing, even if you can sue MS, buy their shares instead lol). They show many times how stubborn and how powerful they are.
What China and Russia are doing... well we know already, they give a shit about anything except its their own rules and as long as these rules suit them. Israel is no different but Germany was a surprise. They just purchased the companies they need (cybersecurity, etc) with fake company names to hide their true identity until a whistleblower fucked them (sadly Switzerland was heavily involved in this too). Even though the whole case smelled fishy, there was nothing we could do. All relevant official papers recorded in the archive related to that incident suddenly disappeared. All former gov representatives insist they do not remember anything. How convenient to forget specific things at your will, I wanna have that ability too π€£
I hope this is the right place to ask, i've been trying to set up a server through a hosting company, but i can't get it to work, i feel like i have tried everything that my knowledge extends to, and read all the guides and what not that i can find. Technicallyο»Ώ, we'll be able to make games on enfusion, but BI doesn't yet know if they'll give players a full engine (not open source), and something kind of unrealistic, but maybe paid, although maybe after the release of some game on enfusion, we will be able to get a full-fledgedΒ ο»Ώenfusion engine, and not just its Workbench tools, do you think?
Do you think we will get the engine and not just its tools?
if you are a studio and make a license deal with them, you will probably get the engine... at some point

Mod making is pretty much said to be a thing since the toolset has been talked about. But don't think there will be more than that. What purpose would that even serve?

Fair enough.
from table1, table2, table3
where table1.something = table2.somethingdifferent

... lots more like this
and table1.id = table2.id```
i want results that
**1.** fulfill all conditions
**2.** fulfill all conditions EXCEPT table1.id = table2.id
How?
thats a pretty abstract example.
Doesn't your example already do that besides table1.id <> table2.id for not equal
basically if the conditions are letters, i want A+B+C+D or A+B+C
its abstract because the real query would be more confusing π¦
could just type a massive or clause but that would be stupid i think
sounds like this would be a good question for stackoverflow where you could present your question, query and sample tables for people to answer.
would be massive effort to anonymize the data im working with, but yeah obviously this isnt the place
just make small sample tables with a few rows of dummy-data, you can make the columns named anything you want for the purposes of asking for help π
i dont think it would be easier to answer if i posted the full tables, it can be condensed to this: if the conditions are letters, i want A+B+C+D and A+B+C. But you are correct otherwise. (Also has to be a single query and not two separate ones)
probably some combination of unions and joins in your select statements then, need to work on your sql-kung-fu π
is Bankrev open source?
no it's not
You are "allowed" to use it but strictly forbidden for commercial use without permission
Is this the place where I can ask stupid computer questions
software related? yes
discord is software, the electronics that is running it is hardware.
for more stupid questions use your favourite search engine, they are bound to have been asked a thousand times already.
I was gonna ask actual questions but customer support finally picked up the damn phone so I forgot about being in here
lol
anyone got any recommendations for a good engineering sketching app/software?
Currently using Catchbook from Siemens but its lacking.
I have experience with 3D CAD but Catchbook is based on 2D if I remember correctly. Their solution has been presented as gap-filler between concept sketch and cad but I never tried this. Maybe Corel (MS sub) or Inkscape (opensource) have something up their sleeves for 2D but I can't tell what is better in terms of 2D CAD
Yeah that's why I asked for technical sketching software and not 3D CAD :D there's plenty for that (or even 2D cad). But early sketching software seems to be lacking.
Use Autodesk.
It's the gold standard
Actually wait.
@brisk inlet FreeCAD?
Has all the capabilities you are looking for and some.
Thatβs a good question. Early sketching is certainly not a common demand in our workplace, will check features tonight
what kind of features do you think the software should have? And what is catchbook lacking in your opinion?
We should have asked that from start π―
I will ask some engineering project buddies what they use these days
Oh btw I have to add something to my previous replyβ¦ I forsake FreeCAD after getting used to AutoCAD π
Cant tell anything useful about the free one
if simple hand sketches are not enough, i transition to parametric sketching in CAD, because i can't think of a way that would make it possible to be "better than catchbook", but more free and faster than CAD.
With hotkeys for sketching (in parametric CAD), sketching is very fast, way faster than you can paint squiggly lines on an ipad, that some pitiful ML gnome has to massage into sensible lines.
an exception is complex 3dimensional shapes with interior, where 2D just isnt viable. E.g. for design of complex multi-level 3D environments (game level) and other stuff. Thats the one place where you just got to have a VR headset with a 3d painting app, there's just no other way i found.
AutoCAD but depends on what they do.
Some use Inventor, some use Fusion 360
FreeCAD does support Paramedic sketches and 3D models.
It also can do FEM - Finite Element Analysis.
I failed to find any further advice for 2dcad with focus on early sketching. Iβm afraid they are still oldschool and going for paper π€£
For "proper" CADing (parametric and multi parts assemblies working on with with multiple people) we use CREO and Windchill as PDM which does it job fine.
But right now for early prototyping where most parts are made by hand and dimensioning is done on a whiteboard without any tolerances CAD is overkill and costs to much time. The system is somewhat complex so drawing the whole thing on paper without the ability to zoom in or shift groups around is annoying.
Excellent question, should have made that clearer myself.
Main gripes are:
- only works on my tablet, can't download it on my main computer
- fixed paper size
- app gets real sluggish with big drawings (probably due to my surface books lacking performance)
Why am I using it: - Auto straightening lines works great, detection of shapes and intersections works okayish
- Easier to generate good looking pictures out of it with minimal effort (gotta have your presentations)
- Mirror axis works great
Alternatives I've considered:
- Just onenote (lacks auto straightening, other relative position detection like orthogonal, parallel etc.)
- Sketch by Creo (looks like paint from 2005, I don't think it even has stylus support and isn't included in our current license)
I totally agree, tools like AutoCAD are usually overkill and expensive on top. Have you ever heard of Ares Commander, NanoCAD, Draftsight or Sketchup? My buddies were mentioning these but I have zero experience with them. (Some of them specifically focus on 2D CAD only)
Thanks for the names, I've looked at them (and tried out sketchup before) but don't think they quite are what I'm looking for. If I'm in technical drawing territory I might as well do it in CREO π
It's a weird edge case I admit
Sorry we couldnβt help, looks like Siemens was the only large player who spotted a specific demand which others ignored.
what cloud storage with 1 TB+ is recommended for a big mod team to store Blender, SP, etc source?
good software integration for up-/download and reliable backup would be important
Git LFS is something I've used in the past for professional reasons, which allows files beyond the 50MB limit
I was going to suggest it too but wasn't confident enough about my knowledge π
Alternatively a dedicated (S)FTP server with a custom backup script could work.
Haven't seen any cloud solutions which offer non-specific files (eg. I believe Adobe offers something for .PSD files, but nothing else)
it seems large studios often use perforce (which also has cloud hosting i think) for art asset version control, but i'm not sure if that is actually any more sophisticated than , say, a svn repository
The downside of SVN/Git with LFS is the fact that you can't have 2 people work on the same file (when bigger than 50MB), since merge conflicts won't be possible to be resolved.
Looking at Perforce it seems they solved that by adding file locking, or running a custom merge tool for flat files. But it comes at a price, especially for larger groups.
Simple cloud storage, https://www.backblaze.com/b2/cloud-storage.html
Cloud Network drive, https://www.hetzner.com/storage/storage-box
Dedicated servers, https://www.hetzner.com/dedicated-rootserver/matrix-sx
You can pair them with https://rclone.org/
Rclone syncs your files to cloud storage: Google Drive, S3, Swift, Dropbox, Google Cloud Storage, Azure, Box and many more.
Allows for scheduled backups or just plain network drive
Most of those file-types would benefit a lot from compression, they all compress really well, even PSD files compress a load compared to real texture filetypes, and if your thinking of using Git it compresses files when they are saved to blobs automatically - no clue how perforce works in this regard, and I dont use svn either. π
Git with LFS enabled for your binary files (textures etc) will keep your repo speed up by keeping the main git to code only and storing those binary files separately in the LFS.
As for backing up a git, everyone with the latest repo pull already has that data on their computer, essentially all your project members could be considered backups provided they have the latest pull, and companies like Github.com/Gitlab.com/others have regularly scheduled backups even for free tiers (usually once a week iirc) - if you are really worried about that you could export your entire git to somewhere else/download it.
Additionally with Substance Painter project files if you use Save & Compact instead of using the regular Save function as it cleans the project file of redundant data & redundant meta-data which can reduce the file-size of SP projects considerably, this method of saving does take marginally longer due to the compression pass, (with fast NAND drives and a modern cpu it's barely noticeable tbh).
The mileage on SP project file-size reduction will vary as it depends on how much activity/changes the project has seen as to how much redundant/garbage data it stores in the project file, for example I have squeezed projects of 2-3Gb+ down to 400-500mb just by using Save & Compact instead of the regular Save function.
Iβve used storage box and rclone for 10+ TB storage solutions
I looked at those storage boxes from hetzner when my backblaze was due for renewal, they're a pretty sweet deal tbh.
I'm not quite there where I would need something like that for my uses π
thanks a lot to all of you πββοΈ
hello, i want to see what mods are loaded in a server using steam api, im using the steam library for python, and when i ask what rules are ( where mods are i think), i have this π :
Base Addons v3.15.7\x03οΏ½οΏ½T\x04οΏ½%οΏ½\x1b"Advanced Combat Environment 3.15.0w\x07\x08οΏ½\x04οΏ½οΏ½\x14.', '\x05\x05': '\n@773125288οΏ½οΏ½wοΏ½\x04οΏ½\x0b\x15.\n@773131200οΏ½fΩ\x047οΏ½οΏ½4\n@
8849667119\x1f\x1ds\x04oοΏ½οΏ½\x1f\x1eFAA Fuerzas Armadas Argentinas\x01\x02'}```
how i decode this
what is "\x01\x05"
its binary, hex... what is that?
this is what arma launcher uses... i expected some list of ids lol, no this
it's packed hex, so in Python you should be able to use str.decode() (Python2) or bytes.fromhex() (Python3)
ill try with that, thank you
my Python is a bit rusty though π
at least now i know its a packed hex lol
