I'd never used that before

#

Not a folder, but a taskbar within a task bar

boreal urchin

Wat?!

#

What's that?!

vocal skiff
boreal urchin
#

Not sure if I'd seen that before...

#

How?!

Right click β†’ Symbolleisten β†’

#

I am not really sure it's useful but at least I now know what it is πŸ˜„

#

They dropped that in win 11 though. Would have actually been nice to expand it with cmd or windows terminal etc

Last I used that was in windows XP πŸ˜„

It was a cool thing when I was like.. 12

vocal skiff
#

Yeah, I don't think it's useful

#

going WIN + E β†’ quick access is faster

or directly pinning the folder

#

Perhaps it's good they dropped it πŸ˜„

#

btw. I just discovered recently that "Opening Files with one click" is actually much nicer than double clicking πŸ˜„

mmm, i just pin applications to taskbar and favorite files i often access, or pin the files on file explorer on the task bar

i really like that feature

I wonder whether UE5 and such technologies will be so much more advanced at some point that Enfusion too becomes essentially deprecated before it has reached even v1.0

#

If I had more resources, I'd seriously consider making an Arma-like game on UE5 with its new streaming system (--> huge maps) and other cool stuff

tribal mesa
#

it would be "the next Arma killer" number 73156 that never sees light of day πŸ˜„ If it was so easy, someone would have already done it.

white knot
#

You can't predict the future by just looking at the past.

#

What I was referring to is that technologies like UE5 seem to be developing at much, much faster rate than e.g. Enfusion. Then we do the math and come to conclusion that the extra possibilities offered by UE5 might pass its limitations in terms of technical value at some point, making UE5/UEX better option for even an exceptional game like Arma

#

I consider the new map/terrain streaming system of UE5 to basically destroy one of the last lines of defense that Arma series has had against possible competitors

#

Squad already does infantry fighting hugely better than Arma, but the vehicles and the maps aren't on equal level in quality - yet. The performance is also generally excellent

#

Just need to perfect the vehicle gameplay and add those huge maps achieved with the new streaming technology. And boom, there we have our Arma killer

#

E.g. even I - despite of being a hardcore Arma fan - don't really play Arma anymore. If I want to play FPS, I always open Squad

nimble knot
#

And there us no editor in other games to invent to infinite new game mods and do whaever you want - you have to stick to few game mods available and to few maps and factions and armament available, unlike in Arma, where you can make new maps, factions, armaments YOURSELF

white knot
#

Yes, that wasn't my point though

nimble knot
#

I know

supple nymph
#

ahem

You guys do know that you can both be correct, right? πŸ˜‰

nimble knot
#

But this is what still compensates for outdated graphics and shitty netcode, hits registration and physics and sound

#

If it wasn't for the editor and mods, Arma would already have lost to some other games

#

Considering all the problems Arma has

white knot
#

And what happens when those other games add an editor and proper scripting language? πŸ˜›

nimble knot
#

Lets see this being done

regal crypt
#

Everything I've seen of Squad is it's full of elitist knobs, way way more than Arma. It's most likely one of the reasons it has low player numbers

opal niche
#

Ooh thats good

tribal mesa
#

if there was a personal sticky board in discord with usefull messages that you could drag and drop for personal safe keeping - that i would find neat. But threads in public spaces? hm... eh... Its hard enough to demand disciplined use of the channels xD

opal niche

Ye

#

and from my experience with slack, it just turns into a mess of people both using threads and not using them

boreal urchin
#

omg windows 10 is so retarded
it uses a locked CPU frequency when I log on
even tho my power plan specifically says use variable frequency

the only way to fix it is to change plans

I made a task to change the power plan to a temp one at log on, and then another task to switch to the main one 30s after log on.

Is that bad? does anyone know a better way?

#

wait nvm. it still gets bugged after a while and doesn't change the frequency. wtf

Never had any issues with that.

boreal urchin
vocal skiff

Based on how the manufacturer switches the powerplans

#

Ive seen lots of laptops do this

#

Dell specifically, its how dell or any other manufacturer has it setup with their own way of powerplan switching in windows

boreal urchin
#

I'll investigate this later.

blissful pewter
#

Yeah we had this at work as well

i know what you mean

#

At work it was because of using ac adapters that were not suited for the power draw by the laptop

then it just locks the frequency

I'd probably use Intel XTU to monitor what's up with the CPU

i extended my space for tabs by putting a monitor left and right of the current... now of course i wont find a tab easily between all the browser window, so instead of looking for the tab among 3 windows and hundreds of tabs, i google for the page...

tribal mesa

just having less tabs seems like a more practical way... it just requires one to be .. tidy. Not my strong suit

Who needs tidy if you can also just master the chaos

vocal skiff
tribal mesa
#

oh no, but there could be one treasure you might lose

tribal mesa
#

... i started chrome on a blank tab and it immediately starts using 40-100% of my CPU (i7 - 9700K)... and not just for a few seconds, it keeps going. wtf is it doing?

#

apparently a so called "software reporting tool" started investigating my PC ... despicable

formal needle
#

haha yes

#

I deinstalled chrome when I figured same thing

#

It was even worse, I had a pretty slow SSD and chrome was using all SSD's bandwidth to scan my whole C drive

#

so my whole PC was totally ded

#

Google must know that no software interrupts the surfing experience

#

ironically it interrupts the surfing experience itself

tribal mesa
#

faint notch
#

that maliciousness, is software that may not work properly with chrome itself

serene sorrel
#

I suggest dumping chrome anyay, because of their upcoming tracking updates which you can not even opt out. I think Edge is the better option atm of you want basically the same browser but not as greedy

tribal mesa
#

yeah i nuked chrome now. Whats that about the tracking?

vocal skiff
#

Using Edge ever since it has been released. Super satisfied with it!

faint notch
#

Microsoft curates the trackers / 3rd party cookies they allow in Edge, while its better than Chrome, they aren't an innocent party either.

serene sorrel
#

I wanted to switch to Brave a while ago, but they did an Oopsie with injecting brave tracking and referrals without telling the users

faint notch
#

I'll stick with Firefox πŸ™‚

open hedge
#

because of their upcoming tracking updates which you can not even opt out.
I read nothing about any sort of new tracking updates that you cannot opt out and that would make the browser so much worse that you want to switch away from it?

All google said is that what they planned to do, they couldn't manage in time and are now delaying onto a new date.

#

Forbes talks about a idea that google has, being bad for other advertisers while not harming google.

#

Yes business wise thats shit, but I don't see why a user would care that facebook now cannot track them anymore, but google still can

#

the same google who already has all your emails and phone tracking data and youtube history anyway... so why care that they can also show you targeted ads which you ad-block anyway

#

The problem that chrome allows third party cookies is not new.
Safari blocked it in 2017, Firefox in 2019, Chrome delayed it to 2022.
But thats not really anything new

And if you want them off, you can just turn them off in the options. Don't see an issue with that

serene sorrel
#

Oh I understood that the tracking ID was forced onto me.

regal crypt
serene sorrel
#

I don't really understand why FF has such a low marketshare. If something did not work in other browsers, FF always did the trick for me. But I don't like its current design and layouting. I am glad Edge is doing fine . Finally a pre-installed piece of software that I don't have to replace.

tribal mesa
#

firefox became aweful/suspect the moment it tried to become chrome... imo. Switched to a fork

nocturne frigate
#

You could also try chromium instead of chrome

tribal mesa
#

too much Cr in it

nocturne frigate
#

If you're able to, you could convince your colleagues to use metastream instead of the chrome only Netflix watching extension

#

it is cross compatible, open source, but buggy when changing videos

faint notch
#

Chrome delayed it to 2022
They actually delayed it till at least 2022, setting no firm deadline for having 3rd party cookies blocked, by which time google will have invented another method they can force upon users to sustain their main stream of revenue, advertising.

open hedge
#

I use TONS of google services, and if they make the money with Ads that I don't care about and don't look at, instead of billing me. Then I'm more than happy with that

Doesn't change the fact that chrome is trash meowsweats

I think its that firefox tree tabs extension thing.

#

Yes its that tab thing.

If you open new tab, it puts it at the end of the current tree item.
So if you already opened 3 tabs from current tab, and open a new one it doesn't go into the next slot but the last slot instead.
Absolute showstopper notlikemeow

#

AH! fixable!

it's a shame whats happening to Audacity, as a FOSS project it should never be used to harvest user data for any reason, this is under the guise of Data necessary for law enforcement, litigation and authorities’ requests (if any) and is baseless, I'd hedge a bet on them wanting to track that data for monetisation or future asset sale in regard to Audacity itself, user-data harvesting is a revenue stream these days after all.

#

Anyway I am getting off topic πŸ˜„

serene sorrel
tribal mesa
#

well that to me seems like a flawed assumption. More Resolution doesnt mean more CPU demand

serene sorrel
#

4k is quite demanding by itself to be driven with 144hz. i doubt any cpu would be up to the task atm. i have a 3080ti and 2k monitor and i am not seeing the results i would want ... even though its not the latest one a 8700k@5.2 ghz should be able to do better - and it does in any other game that is not arma

#

starts embracing dayz and its better renderer again

tribal mesa
#

144hz and 4k... who says 144hz...

serene sorrel
#

anything under 120hz is giving me a bad time ngl ... once you are beyond 60hz for a while you do not go back

#

As in I refuse to play games that limit me to 60fps that are not story tellers

tribal mesa
#

so, i guess, you dont play arma then?

#

the point is - 4k and 144Hz is not a problem in Arma I THINK (with the right GPU), IF you already can get 144Hz at 2K or 1K with the same processor and a worse GPU.

serene sorrel
#

I have not played arma in years, i only use it as my sandbox for modding.

I don't think that is so simple, because the game has to push bigger framebuffers which takes quite a bit of processing power

#

hence i said, no matter how much gpu you have arma 3 at 4k with "playable" framerates is a myth imo

#

which is why i went for 2k monitor. that is the sweetspot for crisp imagine and playable frames

tribal mesa
#

run at 1k resolution for test and see what the framerate is vs. 2k. If you dont get much difference -> you can run at 4k with same cpu i recon

Twitch source code and creator payouts part of massive leak

Twitch is an American video live streaming service that focuses on video game live streaming, including broadcasts of esports competitions, operated by Twitch Interactive, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc.

Their community is also a disgusting toxic cesspool, so to foster more disruption and competition in the online video streaming space, we have completely pwned them, and in part one, are releasing the source code from almost 6,000 internal Git repositories, including:

Entirety of twitch.tv, with commit history going back to its early beginnings
Mobile, desktop and video game console Twitch clients
Various proprietary SDKs and internal AWS services used by Twitch
Every other property that Twitch owns including IGDB and CurseForge
An unreleased Steam competitor from Amazon Game Studios
Twitch SOC internal red teaming tools (lol)

AND: Creator payout reports from 2019 until now. Find out how much your favorite streamer is really making!

Norton 360 anti-virus is literally a crypto-virus now.
https://community.norton.com/en/forums/faq-norton-crypto

The coin mining fee is currently 15% of the crypto allocated to the miner.

Transfers of cryptocurrencies may result in transaction fees (also known as "gas" fees) paid to the users of the cryptocurrency blockchain network who process the transaction. In addition, if you choose to exchange crypto for another currency, you may be required to pay fees to an exchange facilitating the transaction. Transaction fees fluctuate due to cryptocurrency market conditions and other factors. These fees are not set by Norton.

For users of Norton 360, not only will they be installing a crypto miner on your system by stealth, they'll charge you a 15% "mining fee" for any crypto mined on your own computer using it.

No clue, regarding the crypto part - I saw a few other posts on social media about this, in one they claimed the crypto transfer fees were in the upper 40%s, that is on top of Symantec's mining fee of 15%.

It's a total scam, social engineering et al - using deception and peoples self-belief that they'll strike it rich in crypto, when the only people getting rich are the people tricking you into letting them use your hardware, electricity, etc to generate them crypto, aka Symantec/Norton.

I had to do this previously after MS broke Windows Update a few years ago and to fix that issue, outside of a full reinstall, an upgrade in place was the easiest & least disruptive option available.

Opera is one of the best or even the best in that regard, easy to use and its design allows to function on low-end gear too. Lowest rss usage out of all browsers I tested.
Chrome eats up a lot of performance the more tabs and stuff you have open. To my own experience, this usually goes worse if filled with too many active extensions and stuff running in background regardless of whether Chrome was open or not (close window = not always same like terminate app from running)

brisk inlet
# tribal mesa chrome goes through your files... "virus check" they claim , cough cough stealin...

🀣 Well, Google offers free services in exchange of your data and some of them make you very addicted. Never heard Chrome offers virus check but would make sense since even old blockhead MS started to offer internet security free of charge and without any ad-spam together with Windows from start (which makes sense too since lot of people still "believe" they can run a system connected to inet without any security). And the surprising part: MS already dominates the free version market and their anti virus is not bad at all compared to other freewares. # white knot I have interesting story about Kaspersky too

So back in the Arma 2 days I was working on on game design document for a RP gamemode. I had Kaspersky installed as AV because I didn't understand the risks and it was an effective one back then. Eventually, I downloaded the GDD from cloud on my desktop. Because the RPG was intended to take place on Chernarus, it contained a lot of potentially interesting keywords regarding Russia and inside jokes/memes about assassinating Putin etc. Right after downloading the GDD my PC went nuts. Kaspersky started to use 100 % of available CPU resources (which continued for about four days), and I noticed that something sent huge amounts of data (several hundreds of GBs) from my PC over the next few days too. I admit that I did a little test; I copied the GDD to an USB stick and attached to my friends' old PC (yeah, I was a jerk lol). Same result: firewall logged several hundred of GBs of data transmission over their network for the next couple of days πŸ˜„

#

It was about a year after that or so when it was confirmed (by Israel I think) that Kaspersky was cooperating with Russian intelligence services, possibly being forced to do that. I don't know whether it relates at all to what happened with that GDD, but I found it interesting

# white knot So back in the Arma 2 days I was working on on game design document for a RP gam...

I just remember USA pushed lot of IT companies to create backdoors in name of the patriot act. The first to fall was Facebook (Meta) but that doesn't surprise anyone because Zuckerberg shits his pants everytime Gov kicks him. Later Google and others followed after resisting a while because they are big but not as deeply connected as others. At the end just Microsoft refused till the end and even dared to threaten to sue them (If I learned one thing, even if you can sue MS, buy their shares instead lol). They show many times how stubborn and how powerful they are.

What China and Russia are doing... well we know already, they give a shit about anything except its their own rules and as long as these rules suit them. Israel is no different but Germany was a surprise. They just purchased the companies they need (cybersecurity, etc) with fake company names to hide their true identity until a whistleblower fucked them (sadly Switzerland was heavily involved in this too). Even though the whole case smelled fishy, there was nothing we could do. All relevant official papers recorded in the archive related to that incident suddenly disappeared. All former gov representatives insist they do not remember anything. How convenient to forget specific things at your will, I wanna have that ability too 🀣

SSD became a lot cheaper over the last years but if you still need one cheap for good money, Crucial will be your answer. If you wanna keep them for long time, you won't find any better than Samsung right now.

Highly off-topic but is anyone here good at sql? i have a quick question

I know SQL, but I cannot say if I'm good enough to answer your question without knowing your question

tardy geyser

thats a pretty abstract example.
Doesn't your example already do that besides table1.id <> table2.id for not equal

tardy geyser
#

basically if the conditions are letters, i want A+B+C+D or A+B+C

#

its abstract because the real query would be more confusing 😦

#

could just type a massive or clause but that would be stupid i think

faint notch
#

sounds like this would be a good question for stackoverflow where you could present your question, query and sample tables for people to answer.

tardy geyser
faint notch
#

just make small sample tables with a few rows of dummy-data, you can make the columns named anything you want for the purposes of asking for help πŸ™‚

tardy geyser
#

i dont think it would be easier to answer if i posted the full tables, it can be condensed to this: if the conditions are letters, i want A+B+C+D and A+B+C. But you are correct otherwise. (Also has to be a single query and not two separate ones)

faint notch
#

probably some combination of unions and joins in your select statements then, need to work on your sql-kung-fu πŸ˜…

wtf is the difference between software and hardware

discord is software, the electronics that is running it is hardware.

anyone got any recommendations for a good engineering sketching app/software?
Currently using Catchbook from Siemens but its lacking.

brisk inlet
#

I have experience with 3D CAD but Catchbook is based on 2D if I remember correctly. Their solution has been presented as gap-filler between concept sketch and cad but I never tried this. Maybe Corel (MS sub) or Inkscape (opensource) have something up their sleeves for 2D but I can't tell what is better in terms of 2D CAD

dire bronze
#

Yeah that's why I asked for technical sketching software and not 3D CAD :D there's plenty for that (or even 2D cad). But early sketching software seems to be lacking.

Use Autodesk.

#

It's the gold standard

#

Actually wait.

#

@brisk inlet FreeCAD?

#

Has all the capabilities you are looking for and some.

brisk inlet

Thatβ€˜s a good question. Early sketching is certainly not a common demand in our workplace, will check features tonight

tribal mesa
brisk inlet
#

We should have asked that from start πŸ’―

#

I will ask some engineering project buddies what they use these days

brisk inlet
#

Cant tell anything useful about the free one

tribal mesa
#

if simple hand sketches are not enough, i transition to parametric sketching in CAD, because i can't think of a way that would make it possible to be "better than catchbook", but more free and faster than CAD.
With hotkeys for sketching (in parametric CAD), sketching is very fast, way faster than you can paint squiggly lines on an ipad, that some pitiful ML gnome has to massage into sensible lines.

#

an exception is complex 3dimensional shapes with interior, where 2D just isnt viable. E.g. for design of complex multi-level 3D environments (game level) and other stuff. Thats the one place where you just got to have a VR headset with a 3d painting app, there's just no other way i found.

gaunt rapids
#

Some use Inventor, some use Fusion 360

#

FreeCAD does support Paramedic sketches and 3D models.

#

It also can do FEM - Finite Element Analysis.

brisk inlet
#

I failed to find any further advice for 2dcad with focus on early sketching. Iβ€˜m afraid they are still oldschool and going for paper 🀣

dire bronze
#

For "proper" CADing (parametric and multi parts assemblies working on with with multiple people) we use CREO and Windchill as PDM which does it job fine.

But right now for early prototyping where most parts are made by hand and dimensioning is done on a whiteboard without any tolerances CAD is overkill and costs to much time. The system is somewhat complex so drawing the whole thing on paper without the ability to zoom in or shift groups around is annoying.

dire bronze
# tribal mesa what kind of features do you think the software should have? And what is catchbo...

Excellent question, should have made that clearer myself.
Main gripes are:

  • only works on my tablet, can't download it on my main computer
  • fixed paper size
  • app gets real sluggish with big drawings (probably due to my surface books lacking performance)
    Why am I using it:
  • Auto straightening lines works great, detection of shapes and intersections works okayish
  • Easier to generate good looking pictures out of it with minimal effort (gotta have your presentations)
  • Mirror axis works great

Alternatives I've considered:

  • Just onenote (lacks auto straightening, other relative position detection like orthogonal, parallel etc.)
  • Sketch by Creo (looks like paint from 2005, I don't think it even has stylus support and isn't included in our current license)

Thanks for the names, I've looked at them (and tried out sketchup before) but don't think they quite are what I'm looking for. If I'm in technical drawing territory I might as well do it in CREO πŸ˜…

#

It's a weird edge case I admit

Sorry we couldnβ€˜t help, looks like Siemens was the only large player who spotted a specific demand which others ignored.

what cloud storage with 1 TB+ is recommended for a big mod team to store Blender, SP, etc source?

#

good software integration for up-/download and reliable backup would be important

raw elbow
#

Git LFS is something I've used in the past for professional reasons, which allows files beyond the 50MB limit

white knot
raw elbow
#

Alternatively a dedicated (S)FTP server with a custom backup script could work.
Haven't seen any cloud solutions which offer non-specific files (eg. I believe Adobe offers something for .PSD files, but nothing else)

tribal mesa
#

it seems large studios often use perforce (which also has cloud hosting i think) for art asset version control, but i'm not sure if that is actually any more sophisticated than , say, a svn repository

raw elbow
#

The downside of SVN/Git with LFS is the fact that you can't have 2 people work on the same file (when bigger than 50MB), since merge conflicts won't be possible to be resolved.
Looking at Perforce it seems they solved that by adding file locking, or running a custom merge tool for flat files. But it comes at a price, especially for larger groups.

You can pair them with https://rclone.org/

Allows for scheduled backups or just plain network drive

Most of those file-types would benefit a lot from compression, they all compress really well, even PSD files compress a load compared to real texture filetypes, and if your thinking of using Git it compresses files when they are saved to blobs automatically - no clue how perforce works in this regard, and I dont use svn either. πŸ˜„

Git with LFS enabled for your binary files (textures etc) will keep your repo speed up by keeping the main git to code only and storing those binary files separately in the LFS.

As for backing up a git, everyone with the latest repo pull already has that data on their computer, essentially all your project members could be considered backups provided they have the latest pull, and companies like Github.com/Gitlab.com/others have regularly scheduled backups even for free tiers (usually once a week iirc) - if you are really worried about that you could export your entire git to somewhere else/download it.

Additionally with Substance Painter project files if you use Save & Compact instead of using the regular Save function as it cleans the project file of redundant data & redundant meta-data which can reduce the file-size of SP projects considerably, this method of saving does take marginally longer due to the compression pass, (with fast NAND drives and a modern cpu it's barely noticeable tbh).

The mileage on SP project file-size reduction will vary as it depends on how much activity/changes the project has seen as to how much redundant/garbage data it stores in the project file, for example I have squeezed projects of 2-3Gb+ down to 400-500mb just by using Save & Compact instead of the regular Save function.
