I'm glad I still don't have to use win11 lol
I doubt this is a win11 problem
weird, on W10 it worked no problem for me, I only had the new nvme installed when I first boot after copying the drive in macrium, after it booted fine with the single nvme installed (despite complaining about missing apps from the temporarily unplugged drives) I then shutdown and reconnected/replugged my other drives, seemed to go without a hitch that way.
it could be a SecureBoot/Windows issue in looking for SB keys on the old drives device ID instead of the new one if you had the old drive still installed in the system when first booting on the new/cloned drive, SB is still a bit of a dark art to me, but it can be a royal pita with system drives.
I might also just reinstall which would help me clean up the system a bit
hah yea, gets rid of a lot of junk but cloning a drive saves all that reinstalling π
hard choice, I wish windows programs didn't leave so much junk in appdata
actually I am booted on the new ssd, but it wont boot if I remove the old one
I also wish there was a search engine for windows-related problems that automatically filters out all the garbage that says to run sfc /scannow or "install this shady driver tool to fix it automatically"
with sdd clean install makes more sense imo.
they even force you to keep it
I wish there was a piss off button to skip all the time wasting garbage setup steps
I think I have clicked decline and skip like 25 times
turns out I didn't have a whole lot of programs installed after all
but I need to reinstall again because Windows installer added my new system to the boot menu on the old drive
found a bug in windows 11 finally! not sure how it happened but the shutdown button doesnt work
(neither do other options in the menu like restart or sign out)
guess I'm staying logged in forever
doesnt work from the terminal too, wow, I guess it does the same thing
Doesn't sound like anything new yet. Have you ever experienced clicking shutdown or update+shutdown but stupid MS decided to restart instead? It's one of those mystery bugs for our life lol
Power button worked!
anyone know if there's a way to disable the windows thing where it separates files and folders in details view? I want to sort everything by name
i think you missed the most important "feature" warning before entering the world of win11
Even in Windows10 you would require a third party app I'm afraid. Windows settings don't offer anything to force a sorting for both files and folders
Windows 11 isnt a feature, its a virus π
I wonder if they will ever manage to break free from this curse. Since Win98 I always skip one generation and wait for the next and so far it has been a good decision lol
MSI Center has a "free up memory" feature that seems to just flush all RAM usage for Windows apps and they "reassign" whatever number they actually need. It doesn't help with performance and if used a few times can make the PC lag a bit, but when I edit in Arma I often have a lot of things open and my RAM usage goes to 90% and over, so I just flush RAM once and it stays on ~60% (for total usage) until I start restarting apps or just restart the PC.
what could be a counterpart of it in Windows that I could run and get rid of this bloatware MSI has produced? π
this feature is literally the single only thing I'm using MSI Center for but this app will always install stuff I don't need and uninstalling it fully requires attention.
Does the performance suffer from the high RAM usage though? Unused RAM is wasted performance and modern operating systems manage it surprisingly well (e.g. assigning RAM to applications that need it the most on the fly) even if the total usage is nearing 100 %. That's kind of the point, to keep things temporally as near as possible to CPU so that it doesn't have to wait retrieval of the data it needs for ages. That's why AMD's X3D CPUs have so high performance in e.g. games, as the large caches are closer to CPU and have smaller overhead which leads to CPU waiting for data less and thus improved performance
the performance suffers if arma crashes due to lack of ram
with over 90% RAM usage I can feel the web browser starting to choke and unload tabs trying to give Windows more memory, same for Adobe's software but with 98% my PC becomes unresponsive and even when Arma 3 crashes and RAM usage goes down, I have to just restart my PC to make it run as fast as it was before the crash.
and I played around with different memory allocators, memory paging and nothing keeps Arma at bay as good as that flush memory thingy.
not to mention situations where I miss a semicolon in code and Arma starts leaking memory like crazy
That's interesting tbh
there's 2 microsoft apps to basically do the same
I recommend only using them if you have a half decent ssd with half decent endurance
they are RAM MAP and Memory Cleaner.
technically MC is not a real microsoft app, a microsoft employee freelances it, but I like it.
RM is not automatic but is far more effective at flushing junk out of memory than MC is
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/rammap
MC is automatically flushing when stuff hits 80% but not that effective
https://www.koshyjohn.com/software/memclean/
if you can, just go for more RAM, but I understand if that's too expensive.
it's meant to be a temporary workaround rather than a solution, I'm on 16GB and this is more than enough for almost all stuff I do except Arma 3, where with some maps the executable can use up even 8GB in editor and then I'm stuck with little memory left for any code mistakes or sudden heavier workload in any other program.
I'll try the Memory Cleaner, thx
RM will prove more effective, good luck.
Tbh 16GB is a thing of the past, I wouldn't even bother trying to manage with that on a laptop. Some months ago I was struggling with 16gb again because one of my Patriot RAM bars died out of the blue and I could barely handle some stuff. Even some not so special games crashed because lack of memory and MS office apps at high load started to freeze and lets not talk about Adobe...
What's your usage load once system fully started? Before you start any specific big app
Just in case those memory cleaners do not include all steps, I would highly recommend to clear page file at shutdown and flush memory cache too.
But increasing RAM at this point is a relevant step too. 16gb is not going to cut it whether you like it or not. Ever since we jumped from Win7 to Win10, this stupid system started to waste a lot of valuable rss including RAM
If you insist on 16GB, you will be forced to optimize your startup apps too. Disable everything useless. Reduce Windows visual effects too if you don't need it.
Just in case you need a full guide, I can try to find one with google. Those people usually are better at explaining what to do than me
π
Around 4GB, I did an optimization run and tweaked whatever I could
As I said, I am running out of memory only when I am messing with Arma scripts, there is not a single other instance I would need more ram hence my question about the ram flusher
I hear ya. I'm just merely pointing out how their business works. By the time MS offers their own feature (would look like this; https://github.com/IgorMundstein/WinMemoryCleaner) RAM business moves forward and they dictate the price as usual. In other words, purchasing 32GB will be cheaper per GB than picking 16GB. With DDR5 this will speedup significantly within no time as soon as those blockheads recovered from covid aftermath
And as I already mentioned, flushing memory is one thing but if those third party apps do not include clearing page file and flushing memory cache, they just do half their job
You have all info you need, now it's up to you
bro was surprised his bottom dollar memory failed
Someone has to test all kind of shit π
βTestβ I prefer what Iβm using to be proven and stable unlike whatever junk youβre pulling out of the clearance section
16 gigs perfectly enough for gaming but not enough for editing
windows has memory compression already
just turn off the browser and listen to music from your smartphone
that's my most galaxy brain idea
Make sure to untick the "Continue running backround apps/processes when [browser] is closed" setting in Chromium based browsers (Chrome, Edge, Vivaldi, Brave etc.). It's usually on System tab or such in settings. I hate it that it's not disabled by default π
key word is "to be proven" and literally 90% of you guys expect free results but at the same time unbiased and uncorrupted by ads and marketing funds of the very same brands they should review π€£
Most people wish to have bargain deals, so it's obvious that premium brands are usually out of option. I wasted two years just to test Patriot and that is how a real test works, full warranty endurance. I don't see that many reviewers anymore who would go that far, so I have to do it myself as usual
If nothing else runs in the background, yes. I managed to crash Diablo4 and other old crap like Arma3 with 16GB and standard apps such as Chrome, Steam, Discord and Nvidia in the background. If people ask whether 16GB is really enough for average user behavior or not, my answer is a 100% no since 2018
you're probably right, the average user will have more apps open because they won't realize memory usage is a thing, so less memory actually better for "power users"
Because lot of users expect browsers to run "smoothly" anytime which resulted in this change of default option. As long as they don't switch it back online with every update, I won't complain π
I admire honger and others still trying to manage things with what hw rss they have but I wouldn't have the patience to manually flush memory or brainstorming what third party apps would help and not end up as additional bloatware at the end π
Similar to epic loading time (which I don't like either), I dislike stressful tasks while sitting in front of my computer. Things have to run smoothly with a minimum of manual control. No extreme overclocking, no heat issue thanks to extreme cooling and no performance breakdown because system is running 24/7 worst case.
I have 16 gigs on my tablet and it's sufficient for running windows terminal and chrome
surface?
hp elite x2 1013
my partner has a surface and she says netflix works ok
elite x2 is probably my favorite windows tablet because they give you easy access to take it apart and optional accessories you can install in it like a fingerprint reader
i dont like taking the surface apart
We would need a smart brand combining HP business solutions with mindset of frameworks on a professional level with reasonable price tags
you lost me at reasonable price
Btw Apple is doing me no favor these days. Everytime they launch an update, they re-enable WLAN and BT for no reason...
My surface pro is 16GB ram and is going on 4 years old, it is still plenty fast and faster than my work laptop that is 32GB of RAM (surprisingly the tablet has better cooling and stays within power envelope while laptop doesn't and throttles constantly)
I've run VM's on this tablet before, visual studio ran fine too with several tabs, can't say I've ever used memory flushing apps before.
Most windows instability I've run into is related to not ACTUALLY restarting OS (power button on a lot of laptops/etc sends them to hibernate which some people don't realize isn't actually shutting it off), and even that instability is mostly due to shit apps slowly causing issues for everything else(all apps are shit apps sadly....)
Though...PDF's open in browsers is insane RAM usage always, but in the actual application it isn't...
I really hope people don't buy surface for gaming π€£ If we are speaking for business/work apps, 16gb is still enough. As long as noone is that stupid to let hundreds of chrome tabs open, I doubt it will run out of RAM that easily.
And yes, Adobe is Adobe, even PDF sucks out rss easily π
Don't even mention their other apps but we need them...
I tried running arma once on the tablet lol
lol
it was surprisingly ok at 640 resolution
but that resolution isn't really playable lol
Imagine Arma gameplay with touchscreen
not having a mouse hooked up at the time was def a detriment
but I had to do some mission bugfix and test without any other HW, and it worked
I think the GPU can't keep up, and the cpu couldn't handle the offloading to it
need slightly better than the igpu on this
or maybe I needed to turn up the quality settings
to get mroe stuff off the cpu
I played counter strike 1.6 once with the feature on windows that let you move the mouse cursor with the numpad because my mouse didnt work on windows xp
I always wondered how much more the iGPUs and other stuff have to improve that we can run Arma3 virtually lol
Holy shit that exactly sounds like console fps with gamepad buttons
Nah I expect the manufacturer to test their own stuff and they usually do.
they mostly did in the past, now it feels like just a handful stay loyal to their quality promise
Unplug it from the internet and run a VM to access internet off your phone with new SIM cards every week.

the new HL2 RTX Remix looks cool as well
anyone here with experience with current ceph versions?
Yeah DM me
for whatever reason I can't remove English "keyboard" language from my PC
It does not show up in Language settings, instead it looks like I have only the desired one lang. I added it to the preferred languages and then removed and then it was gone up until pc restart, now it's here again. Any way to get rid of it once and for all?
or at least disable the Alt + Shift shortcut, I can't seem to find any setting for it.
win10 or win11?
10
i hope it wasnt a preconfig oem license, will check my database bc i think someone encountered that issue some time ago too
I removed one language before successfully, like after last reinstall in August, I noticed it back again after recent Win10 update
and it's BOX license
That's a new thing MS likes very much, every update wipes out all kind of tweaks, even if its removal of Edge or minor setting change that doesn't fit into their game.
Make sure its admin account and before you start the regular proceedings its really admin right enabled too (yeah sounds stupid but this is how MS works...dont ask why)
After removing the language, check registry:
normal path is computer\hkey_users.default\keyboard layout\preload
you should be able to navigate with mouse too
delete the unwanted layout there too
after this try restart again and hopefully windows update doesnt mess up things again too
I believe the registry entry and windows update fuck up together and give you a funny reborn effect on your unwanted layout
I have this problem since windows 7. It keeps coming back at some point after getting rid of the unwanted input method. I think I'll setup some script to turn it off every boot or something when it happens again.
I tried that luxury to get rid of Cortana and Edge, didn't work π
At least I have no nightmare with those stupid layouts
one of my friends just installed a fresh win11 and he says he encounted the exact same problem right after the recent win11 update. looks like one specific win11 update is the big issue here. wouldn't surprise me if its the same package that messed up other things recently. (i couldn't reproduce the issue on win10 yet, tried on my own system with a test drive)
he added English US as standard, no others, after update English UK just popup
- First add standard language pack e.g. US english
- add the ghost pack again
- remove all you dont wanna keep
- check registry (see above)
- check next update lol
Yup. Comes back eventually.
deleted and moved my last post, posted it in wrong channel by accident

NVIDIA's Ray Reconstruction technology, which debuted alongside DLSS 3.5, is now a graphics option in Cyberpunk 2077 2.0. This launches just ahead of the Cyberpunk: Phantom Liberty DLC/Expansion and technically can work on all RTX video cards. Ray reconstruction specifical...
Yeah we were testing with Cyberpunk and 4070Ti recently and tbh it still takes more to impress
I don't bother to try it again
kinda disappointing that we need to use things like DLSS to have normal FPS in games nowadays
would like to see a game engine using gaussian point clouds in real time though
I find it very exciting
being able to use newer visual tech sooner, before hardware evolves or getting more out of current and last gen tech, for smoother gameplay
its a plus in all regards, no downsides imho
There were times when buying an expensive gpu could get you enough raw performance to run everything, now pay more for top gpus and you need to use dynamic resolution scaling to run things
The issue is that people are running higher resolutions too.
I'm on ultrawide 3440x1440 and 4090 has enough raw power. But at 4k it would be problematic.
Two reasons why those times are over:
- Nvidia was sleeping on their throne and did not evolve (and they failed to acquire ARM quietly)
- People want insane high resolution from start.
One yells 4k and they jump on the train like lemmings even before enough content is ready for 4k, which is why marketing is targeting at them like that too and sadly it works. buy 4k tv now! and they buy. buy 4k gaming now! and they buy. There are some 5k and higher screens out now too. really no idea why i should bother about this right now.
While people were hunting 4k, I'm still sitting on 1440 and there is really no need to pump muscles with 4k for gaming. The only reason why I would need 4k is my work but thanks god I'm not in visual department, 4k for home office and management is still a luxury no matter what people say.
And TehFocus made the point, some people will need DLSS and RT because as soon as they start gaming, they won't see the ugly differences that much because they focus on gameplay and not how butterflies and otehr crap look amazing or ugly
and it's much more cost efficient on top to avoid such early fake trend timings. one day and probably much sooner than later we will shift from 1440 to 4k anyway. Why should I bother wasting my money on insane video cards and insane screen prices despite technology is not even full ready? They first have to fix the displayport too and a few things more.
thanks to shortage and other crap from covid outbreak, they started to shit production towards 4k earlier because they wanna focus materials for better profit and some specific 1440p jumped up insanely in price, it makes no more sense to buy them unless you insist. others are again n/a. so i wouldn't be surprised if we sit on more 4k next year or 2025 already
lets see how apps will move along, especially these days it's real important they are designed performance efficient too
what do i care about 4k if i cannot even play properly with smooth stable fps?
I agree to an extent - I've spent enough time in software development to believe that majority of software is written to be horrible
for example there was a game called american conquest that was a real time strategy game which allowed up to 16000 units and ran comfortably well on my single core pentium 4
right now people lose their minds when a game can do 1000 units, AC wasn't 3d though but still
sorry to tag you out of the blue like this, but maybe you could help me figure out why my component re-renders when I navigate away to a page that does not have the component on it? like, I have console.log inside SomeComponent, and I navigate (via nextjs router.push()) to a different page, and I notice console.logs from SomeComponent printing just like I was visiting the previous page
Idk, what if you navigate via Link instead of scripted router
If the re render is an issue you can try memoizing the component, read about useMemo
same thing, I'm wondering if this is in fact intended behavior or a bug in my app
the only way it does not re-render is if I navigate without using routers - as in a "basic" html link that just opens the new page without prefetching anything
I don't know if this is something I should worry about or not, it doesn't actually cause any problems but it seems inefficient
ok I get it now, I saw my console.log because it was printing when the functional component was unmounting
a memory write, but not a read?
Well if you can write, you can just write code that reads everything for you
for chrome is there an exploit to use with this to break out of the sandbox?
are you sure? in chrome this would be in the renderer which is sandboxed
Ah I see. Chrome also has an update with fix available though, just update your browser
yeah, they reacted quite quickly - unfortunately, a lot of end users will now be vulnerable for a long time because browser updates are not something people usually know about, hopefully their auto updaters take care of it for them
Browsers usually auto update quickly.
But stuff like Discord, Slack, Skype, Gimp, Inkscape, LibreOffice..
yeah, low key looking for some kind of harmless example file to check in some apps
I think even visual studio code is vulnerable
https://blog.isosceles.com/the-webp-0day/ has repro.
But not something that would crash you
it crashes my image viewer XnViewMP tho
the browsers were updated as part of the first CVE
just days after the fixes to Apple's different OS flavours
Could we just briefly talk about Elektron?
Who is going to update my like 2 million apps nowadays running in the browser?
That's the fun part
lol
To quickly explain this to all plebs not in the IT: we are f****d
I remember when simplemachinesforum was being hax0red by code injection in avatar images but this seems worse, seeing as it's an image rendering issue
anyone know of a CDN service that allows wildcard or regex definitions of subdomains and sites that I can configure as a customer?
It still crashes my affinity photo
hello, my friend is having problema setting up Task Force Radio
we are playing using the public TS Server, and we've never had any problem using TFAR
but when my friend joins his mic gets disabled and constantly gets the error "your message was disabled for spam protection. please try again later" and can't use TFAR at all.
he's the only one having this problem, anyone have any idea?
resolved, for some reason having is in game nickname as "admin" (his default PC userNAME) was the problem
this channel is about software, not arma ingame issues, check the channels, there is one for troubleshooting
i forgot that i got this dialog a while back on my samsung after an update. apparently its done on purpose only for their "lower end" phones https://www.reddit.com/r/LinusTechTips/comments/139cce4/seriously_samsung/
favorite method of authentication for APIs? are there some polls where devs said what auth types they like most?
didn't know they would make the efforts of poll and records of it
i would love to see that too
I'm relatively positive developers prefer "just" using bearer tokens or keys instead of messing with oauth, for simplicity
I prefer not having to mess with crap and just getting a auth token.
If whatever library I'm using has oauth integrated and lets me just pass a toekn and does oauth in the background, then I don't care.
If I have to do it manually, heck no
i have arma 3 server but i need help adding mods to it?
wrong channel^^
were do put it than?
there are server channels and for mod, you can check the list
dedicated for server admin, arma, reforger etc

Hello! I have seen a tiktok with a person taking notes in class in minecraft in a book instead of writing them in word or notepad. I have also seen working android infotainment dashboards in asseto corsa and working browsers in San andreas multiplayer.
What I am wondering is whether a game exists in which I can build a html, css, Javascript website. This year in the computer science class all of us will be building websites for a certificate and I would really like to build it in a game.
Image.
Basically I want a game in which I can make a website
Interesting idea.
I have not seen or heard of one
anyone else here using Opera GX and noticed that google sometimes "forgets" the darkmode? I have both google and the browser set to work in darkmode only, Windows is also set to whatever the darkmode is called yet when I search from the context bubble or address bar, Google opens in light mode. No other website seems to do this
Not the first time you encounter such bugs, Chrome sometimes pisses me off very much, especailly over the last three years
I was told I should stop using Opera too because they sold their soul to China in 2016... and I didn't even realize that lol
So we are back to square one with Firefox...
Hmm google marked GitHub as dangerous website xD?
whole github or a certain repo?
Ah ace has been blacklisted for a good few weeks now iirc.
It doesn't trigger when you end the link with slash.
Last 2 weeks it was green, Google is finding something it does not like but we have not clue what.
So if someone has some friends at Google Safe Browsing team... lmk
or you can just about:config and disable: browser.safebrowsing.phishing.enabled & browser.safebrowsing.malware.enabled to prevent google recording and sniffing every url you access.
(use those settings at your own risk.)
Does it send URL or hash?
Maybe it's just a hash collision π
Install unwanted or malicious software on visitorsβ computers
lmao what
I think mr ded has a point here, it seems more like a hash collision than actually something being detected
you would be surprised how easy it is to access peopleβs pcs, especially connected to public wlan
and these dumbs are the pain in the ass we feel over the years bc we suddenly need two factor, new pw every quarter and all kind of mandatory crap
It sends partial hash, gets a list of potential matching hashes back, client does final check against potential matching hashes
Good. Was pretty sure that they wouldn't send URL's you visit to google, cuz then privacy people would've gotten angry a long time ago
thats a nice solution
is there some kind of printer software that can handle printing anything with settings in a very straightforward way? I often have to go through 3 dialogs to print something
let github or students write one for you
Don't printers need to follow some communication standard? Susprised there's no software that can take the pain of printers away.
It's like it takes 9 or more clicks to select tray 2 and a4
to my knowledge, once you have set the printer up in windows, printing through the OS dialog is pretty straightforward
If I print from Chrome I need to click to go from Chrome to another dialog, in which I need to click a button to go to the system dialog which is medieval UX
3 steps, bidens america..
this could be all in 1 dialog, shouldnt have to go through 3 to choose which tray to print from
also not liking how all 3 dialogs scale things differently so I have to paste an image into a word document to print it looking the way I want (are printers SAP?)
hey guys, i am quite new in arma3 and i am facing some issues installing the TFAR plugin with da new steam v5 beta... any advise?
if you check #channel_invites_list TFAR have their own discord, you will likely get direct help there.
TS5 does not support plugins, you need TS3 for ACRE and TFAR
how can i send a picture
i got bored so i turned on all the setting for the razer system booster to see how much ram it saves, and when i restored it a program came up saying 'crypto jacking' is that bad
it says - A["request_type":8,"id":0,"payload{"version":"4.1.1.846","settings":{"*OnlyShowAnnotationsOnSecureSearch":true,"*Icons":true,"UseNativeLogger":flase,CryptojackingDisabled":true}}}
If you value the old school teamspeak for the love of god do NOT install the beta version...
in OBS I have a video set for a stinger transition between scenes, problem is that sometimes it just doesn't trigger and either immediately switches to the next scene, plays video without audio or audio without video. Sometimes clicking back and forth the scenes helps, sometimes I have to manually re-select the mp4 in transition settings. Anyone encountered this before?
I've browsed OBS forums but none of the issues reported there are the same as mine because nothing is crashing and the video is playing, just not 100% of the time.
run obs with the debug/console and see if an error pops up with the transition when you change scenes.
help > log files > view current log file, check the box for "show on startup" if you want it to run every time you run obs.
you can override the transition set in Scene Transitions by scene by right clicking on your scene in the Scenes box Scene > Transition Override & Select Transition.
thats how I set my custom transition stingers, I always found the main Scene Transition to be a bit flaky and kinda limited, by using the override you can also set scenes to use different stingers.
https://steamdb.info/depot/1716751/history/?changeid=M:1086814732891614069 whoopsie...
Seems ubisoft accidentally pushed their debug symbols for splinter cell to steam π
Guess some manual deployment is happening there
Hello can someone teach me coding

That's a thing most people do not know. You cannot graduate from Harvard free of charge but they provide you all their study material online free of charge
Any recommended alternative software to substance painter that is free? I'm trying to build my savings up after paying off alot of bills and I'd rather not pay 20 a month.
Zbrush? Was that free?
no, zbrush is for sculpting, substance painter is for texturing/painting.
Quixel Mixer?
look up armorpaint + armorlab (https://armorpaint.org/), it's free* with source code available on github (https://github.com/armory3d/armortools), you can compile it yourself relatively easily, otherwise you have to purchase them through gumroad/itch/apple||google-stores for ~$19.
it's only "free" for work in UE, and there's some crazy Epic T+C's attached to its use and content created from it.
Thanks I'll look those up
Armorpaint is probably what I was thinking of yea

Oh hells yeah, guys! You can finally disable the forced combining of windows in taskbar on Win 11!
Oh yeah I'd like to ask about this issue that lasts very long years... on Win10, is there any way to stop Borderless Fullscreen window from get visible despite it is minimized (like Win+D to show the desktop) and selecting other app to show one? This is very frustrating when I'm playing Arma 3 and selecting an app on Desktop for whatever reason
No not really, they never fixed it properly and depends on how well that app is designed on top, so you may blame both MS as well as the specific app. I've experienced different situations and came to the conclusion that certain apps do better than others. There are games which seem to be a lot easier to handle with borderless full window mode.
I'm not sure if Nvidia and AMD did their part meanwhile but I've experienced performance issues especially with borderless windows in dual screen, certain apps suddenly lose priority and as a result drop down in fps critically despite not being in background
Do you mean possibly both Win10 and A3 are the faulty?
I'm afraid that is possible. I can check later once more which games did better in borderless full window mode
Here is a good video for somebody who wants to make game with terrain:

Btw does anyone know which free app would work to map a new network plan from scratch? They left behind an outdated map with VDSL copper but we are on fiber... π half of the info on that paper is wrong
perhaps an education version of ciscos packet tracer? Should be free
idk to what extend you can map your personal usecase but it simulates even complex networks quite well
mspaint
Pen & Paper
There are things where software really does not offer much of a benefit
thanks, will have a look at it
no?
yes
idk depending on how complex you need it maybe something simple like draw.io would work
means we either are too stupid to provide proper tools or its another proof that digital ain't always great
fortunately it's just the sketch-like plan with lot of bubbles/squares/circles for the entire central server rack including router, switch, firewall etc.
draw.io looks good too
I want to make a DIY Chromebook, so to be able to emulate Android games on PC WHILE being able to control them through my phone like you would do it natively through playing on your smartphone. Unfortunately I cannot find any solution to this, Bluestacks emulates games well however it only allows to bind analog movement to mouse and keyboard, and googling only shows me articles on how to turn a phone into a console controller which is what I do not want. Any ideas?
I don't really understand what you are describing, you want PC to run the game but phone to be a controller for it/display it?
yes, emulate the game on pc but use the phone for controlling (because I do not have a pc touchscreen)
that is definitely a goal that is going to be buried by more popular search results that are similar lol
I see something called airdroid cast that can mirror screens/controls of android over to other OS's, and some people indicate it is good for gaming. It can do between 2 devices on the same network (WLAN or LAN)
so you want low latency android casting, or mirroring may be the correct search terms
to find what you want
not entirely sure if airdroid will work on the chromebook but maybe
like it will cast to chromebook, but not sure if sourcing on chromebook works
or just mirror the mobile display over USB
I need the game to run on my PC tho because my phone sucks, its too slow and screen to small for my liking (and I am a poor pleb rn, already invested in the computer so I want to exploit that). Unless this will allow me to use the phone as my PC's "touchscreen" for emulated games.
I'll look at that, also found something called spacedesk
just bear in mind that I use chromebook as a simile (because you can play smartphone games on it thanks to the OS and most of these laptops are basically better than phones, the one I happened to use had touchscreen)
ipads basically have a superior CPU but everything else is not designed for rss-killer games. I doubt you will see a proper emu for mobile games anytime soon because there are so many licenses and patents involved, such holders bitching left and right the moment someone decides to distribute/publish their work without asking permission or to pay for.
I still remember it took them a while until someone upgraded previous emu such as Nintendo from keyboard/mouse to gamepad and touchscreen will be a challenge imo
And a lack of money for them when buying the old device is so cheap
Only good emulators are almost as old as the device
Dolphin being a prime example
yeah the only difference was price of games but that changed drastically too
no more regional blocker too
anyone used terraform proxmox providers?
Ask a real question, dont ask to ask
fair point, I was hoping it can resize a template disk but it seems it can only add disks
Telmate/terraform-provider-proxmox is supposed to support it but seems buggy
that's the one I'm using and it does not resize template disk
I don't see any switches to resize the disk in the docs as well, only to define new disks
In that case, there should be a bug report added to their GitHub, describing how to reproduce this issue
there are multiple
some say it works in newer versions, some say they still have issues
make sure the slot attribute is defined for the disk entry, then increase the size attribute
slot=0 didnt make any difference for me
its ok tho this seems to be the only feature this doesn't currently have that is useful to me, so it's still a huge success
I wanted it for VMs
ah, you didn't specify that π
you're right, my bad, I assumed nobody uses proxmox for containers
yeah no it doesn't resize the cloned disk, the newly created disk has correct size as specified
in the same boat as the dudes in the issue linked above
FSR3 source code published for anyone interested:
https://gpuopen.com/fsr3-source-available/
https://github.com/GPUOpen-LibrariesAndSDKs/FidelityFX-SDK/tree/release-FSR3-3.0.3
Combine them into a larger issue with more attention to it, and conveniently mention an alternative to terraform that you were forced to use because the tool cannot satisfy your basic needs. Watch how fast devs fix it.
be on the lookout for any updates from your motherboardβs manufacturer (their logo will most likely show when you boot your pc) there is a new exploit that can bypass all safety features of the boot sequence to allow the hacker to do whatever they want to your pc (some of which could be VERY illegal) the exploit does however require computer access but can be done with remote code execution so be really careful about what you download
Thereβs a million of these
Donβt fear monger and just post a source bro
Probably a nothing burger
https://binarly.io/posts/The_Far_Reaching_Consequences_of_LogoFAIL/index.html It is bad though, e.g. Schneier sums it up nicely: Itβs an interesting vulnerability. Corporate buyers want the ability to display their own logos, and not the logos of the hardware makers. So the ability has to be in the BIOS, which means that the vulnerabilities arenβt being protected by any of the OSβs defenses. And the BIOS makers probably pulled some random graphics library off the Internet and never gave it a momentβs thought after that.
How much of this requires direct hardware access
I remember I tinkered around on previous mainboards long time ago by adding my own crap and decided it has to be the Nike logo and the loading progress was displayed by filling up the logo with a specific color. Never imagined this would later find purpose in marketing and create such a vulnerability lol
It was interesting to read his report, certainly wasn't waste of time
should i enable Hyper-Threading or support for large block?
@faint notch I'm curious, does disk speed matter when streaming? I'm rescaling the OBS output and while the GPU load is sub 60% and nothing else abnormal in task manager or in OBS logs the game capture can still drop a frame or two, I notice it when watching as OBS does not report anything.
For OBS itself probably not once its loaded its loaded, but for any assets you use in scenes it likely would, images, videos, transitions, audio files, etc.
Likewise if you are recording drive speed will matter then since you are writing to a drive when doing that.
With all of that a SATA SSD should be fast enough though, I cant say I'd benchmarked driver perf in OBS as I've never had a need to do so.
Well recording and upscaling to 2k is smooth with no lags at all but streams cough a bit. Next time I'll try putting both OBS and my scene assets onto an ssd
it could even be the hardware encoder just being an earlier generation of nvenc and not capable of using the newer nvenc encoder libraries, OBS supports both old and new nvenc libs but as with all encoder stuff, newer versions are just better, more optimised etc.
I'd keep an eye on the log files, see if anything crops up in those.
Any way to install the older nvenc lib? Streamlabs has two versions iirc
obs supports them both, it'll be whatever your drivers come with.
iirc in the steaming > video encoder options drop down it has nvenc (old) or nvenc for the newer cards, as they support totally different encoder options they created a separate encoder option for it, it's been a while since I poked around in there, I generally set it and forget it π
anyone figure out how to permanently disable Windows' ability to add and change my input methods so only one is always used?
What
you'd think it'd respect my override but it keeps adding a default keyboard input method once per quarter
you have a regedit getting overwritten by updates?
thatβs now common thanks to MS being a bitch. i tried to disable things like edge and bing with regedit, later even with powershell but everytime you update, they overwrite it again. all i can do is report to EU office and give up for now
I set it to my layout, delete the other one, a few months later it comes back.
There needs to be a way to force it with the task scheduler or something
If MS decided they want to keep it there like "reborn feature", there is zero chance to bypass their update except you completely skip the update process. You would have to find out whether your change is part of their grand plan or not lol
I think I complained about the same thing few months ago. Copium is the solution I guess
Told ya, no matter how many times we complain, MS is not the one who does listen well to their customers, in fact they don't care
Tell me another company on this planet who manages to stay alive and profitable after defying both US as well as EU supreme court^^
They will change their mind as soon as another proper desktop OS is provided. Lets hope Linux delivers what they promised and I'll be the first to abandon Windows on my private systems
have to wait for nividia to provide first
Apple, Meta, ABC (Google), just to name a few π
Not to mention the Chinese super corporations who simply ignore the US and EU π
I suppose you did not understand what I mean. MS overturned the U.S. supreme court by pumping money to the next president who just "happened" to reselect all judges and those new judges just "happened" to revise the ruling.
Apple, Meta and Google never managed to win many supreme court decisions in first place, they shit pants and settle most of their issues outside court if you ever had a track on their incidents.
Especially Meta is no serious showcase but nvm lol
Guess where Zuckerberg was spotted inside EU last time after they faced another ruling
When NSA demanded backdoor access to all data, especially Apple, Meta and Google pissed their pants and offered immediate cooperation. MS was the sole company in the USA openly threatening NSA with a lawsuit. At the end they bowed down their head too because government pressure was bigger than lobby power => national security & patriot act
Even MS is smart enough to understand it's not wise to move against the entire country and their sentiments. (one of many sources: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/jul/11/microsoft-nsa-collaboration-user-data)
It's that simple: 9/11 changed a lot of things in the USA and you are simply stupid if you refuse to cooperate after such an incident. That makes you a bullseye target
And Chinese lol I'm sorry but it's not much of a challenge to simply ignore USA/EU because not a single Chinese company operates inside those territories with a HQ. They are all located deep inside China and they would survive without us pretty much.
In fact: We are drooling for access to Chinese market despite all political efforts to get away from semiconductor business located in China/Taiwan, am I wrong? We don't exactly make it harder for them to "ignore" us.
I'm not sure if you follow what is happening inside EU at all but there is a nonstop crackdown ongoing. All top dogs including CEOs of Apple, Meta and Google were taking a flight to EU Brussel because they either faced CJEU ruling or more pressure from EU comissions in many issues including data protection
I'm looking forward for proof how Apple, Meta and Google are exactly on par with MS in this regard as they are losing lot of money in CJEU ruling alone.π
Their market dominance was never part of my statement. Not even Intel comes close to MS in terms of power because Intel couldn't overturn any of their recent rulings because it's a fact they did lot of illegal things to cement their market power
It's rather an eyesore that US gov cannot handle any of the many issues related to software world and data protection (or any of their own companies lol). It's always the EU being the spearhead. Switzerland is an eyesore too... they do nothing until EU let rain down hell on them
I cannot find the LOL emoji but agree with you 1000%
actually I think it might be working correctly I just realized I have ctrl + shift + 1 for recording video of the screen and this is probably what is occasionally resulting in me remaining in the wrong keyboard input layout (if I don't press it again and use my mouse pointer to stop recording, for example)
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-67881373 than you for bringing us innovations Micro$oft, very cool
could be, Ctrl+Shift is a [part of] combination for changing the lang, but it shouldn't work if you have just one package installed.
for me with every update or so, I get the English one back and now I can't even disable it permanently
any recommendations for a software that would be capable of an extensive normalization of very long audio tracks? Something like Garageband, shit ton of settings with minimal amount of microediting, but for Windows. Audacity does not perform well at this at all
Just run it virtually, there is nothing to stop you from running Mac virtually on Win
and unless youβre willing to pay, youβre out of options. Those Apple stuff and Audacity are either opensource or Apple exclusive
maybe ocenaudio? but i never tried and never will. just as much as i am pissed with visual editing, i have no time to waste with opensource experiments in audio editing until they release something that is better than paid solutions. same reason why i reject linux until they provide full game compatibility
3d acceleration no worky, so you can't even use safari
I wanted to virtualize macos for web app testing for myself but no virtualization package on windows and lunix can do it with 3d acceleration (that I know of)
Jesus, didn't expect it's not even possible to run virtually, sounds like perfect Apple
You can run it, just without 3d acceleration (for now anyway)
doesn't have to be open source, trial versions of paid stuff will work too
I just would like it to be not too complicated because I am not trying to master a movie soundtrack or a music band song, just get some of my Arma 3 videos to be more "normal" so youtube doesn't normalize the audio on their own
pcie passthrough
vmware has a basic 3d driver with metal support
So have you tried it?
used it for mac VMs before with iOS simulator testing
No vmware feature worked for me for this, can you share a working config or something?
I must have missed something
we used ESXi on Mac Pros
If Apple decides to make MacOS compatible to any hardware, some companies would reconsider but I still remember how stubbornly 5 of us tried to get a Hackintosh running, grinding our teeth in stress. It was a success but simply not worth. Even Linux tinkering looks easier than that lol
just rent a mac
also
it's a web app lmao
but if you really want to own it you can buy a 5 year old mac for a few hundred USD and it will probably run everything mostly fine
works for ipads, even a decade but not sure if macs last that long, macbooks started to slow down
If I had a mac I wouldn't need to virtualize a mac
I will never buy Apple computers because it's a ripoff in many ways except their CPU maybe. If they wanna dominate the desktop market, they should learn the lessons and let people decide what hardware they wanna buy
Software is the key. How many times do other less innovative companies such as Microsoft, SAP, Google, Adobe etc have to prove this to Apple π
it's the only alternative to windows for desktop though, and in use by a lot of artists and software developers
True enough, because they save a lot of money and its very convenient eco-system which does work compared to Windows...
Windows and I are on very bad terms since late stage of Win10, they try to overturn the EUCJ ruling illegally and bothering us with Edge and Bing too much. It's really invasive and simply annoying
No
The people buying Mac do not buy it because itβs cheap
They buy it because it works and it works damn well for their purposes.
read my comment above, hardware alone is everything but cheap, its a ripoff of its finest, but add software (os, appstore, free creative suites), a functional ecosystem with all other apple devices and you suddenly feel its a βfairβ price for some.
not to mention adobe alone was insanely expensive until they offered monthly subs
in fact macs do not work that well for my purposes, i had to access their console to change smallest things. i dont like apple but have 4 ipad air since 10y and two apple tvs. says a lot about competition sleeping and refusing to invest properly. now windows follows this shit too, removing some of our free choices. having an eye on their next rollout of oem-grade windows and winpe if we can override that shit anyhow.
Semi-serious question: is there any recommendation for an app for Android that can alarm/remind me in a certain time I've set, but it only happens when the GPS is in a certain place at the moment?
There are plenty of solutions separated for time or location but never seen a combination of it either.
This reminds me of the huge mess of bonus card systems... shit tons of cards, now the same with apps, rarely a unified solution anywhere.
For my tasks, I'm forced to use Google Keep, Outlook/Apple Calendar and have separate repeating time alerts as well as location alerts when I'm in total stress. So... still waiting for someone to unify this mess and do something like Apple for ONCE in their lifetime. Cannot be that hard if they were not busy counting their dollars
I run Home Assistant at home for automations, which allows me to do everything (including setting alarms at geo locations), but that's far from a simple app solution.
Did check my Google Home app if it's possible, which supports actions based on geo location, but it can't set/unset/change an alarm for some reason π€
One day we will all end up with Alexa lol
Pretty much I'm also very suprised I couldn't find one, I already tested two or three of suggested but they all do the same, alert when I enter or leavr the area. The goal is basically to slap my ADHD brain, but not sure why there is none it seems π€
Lets hope "not yet". Just takes another bunch of students with courage and maybe we will have our solution sooner than later
Or DIY... I guess
One workaround I can imagine is, since my intention is to have an alert when I'm still home for whatever reason, wake up my PC before the alert (probably hours before the alert so I can shut her down if I do) and do alert when the time has come
Okay I set the workaround
- Wake up my PC hours before the alarm will happen
- When the time has come do both, but only happens if the PC is still up
- Change Audio Output to my speaker to prevent hearing the alert from the headphone
- Do alert with sound
- If I shut my PC down before that, basically nothing happens
Let's see if this works
https://developer.android.com/develop/background-work/services/alarms/schedule
so much work for time alert, I assume it's not less for location and now the ultimate question, how many hours would we require to invest to get it combined successfully
- solution β
- workaround idea β
- convenience β
sounds like daily business, welcome in club!
I somehow realized too late that it really doesn't even need to be an Android app π€£
hello, did you know to find the MPmission folder on mac?
thank you
fyi: https://www.reuters.com/markets/europe/eu-general-court-rejects-valves-appeal-against-eu-antitrust-decision-2023-09-27/
we were talking about this in the games channel and it's generally important for every Steam fan inside EU
i updated from win11 22h2 to 23h2, ISO size went up 1GB..? but the versions of most system binaries are still the same as before. e.g., winver in windows sandbox still shows "22h2".
did they just want to push out the copilot AI stuff with this update or what? lmao
I do not pay attention to Win11 because I will jump from 10 straight to 12 but as I heard, difference between 22h2 and 23h2 is literally zero excepting "end of support date" π
11 is okay not substantially worse than 10
Maybe but I decided to stick to the magic rule of Windows, because the new Win10 is a pain in the ass already too.
People complain about it forever but I only have like 1 or 2 issues with it
That's windows, this is why we eternally continue to complain
And I was fine with Win10 in general until they started to adapt the same shit from Win11 backwards and the wrong ones at that...
Namely Bing, Cortana and Edge. Starts with the simple fact that you can no longer remove them, no matter what. Some system internal features such as Windows search engine automatically runs Bing recommendations which I don't fucking need inside my own system and distracts you from relevant search results. Edge features do not work 100% with different search engines aside from Bing. And sorry but wtf is Cortana? I would rather install Alexa before I dare to think about this crap seriously
So at the end I agree with you, I basically have just one issue or if we count all details 3 in total π
Oh weird I have cortana off and search doesnt use bong on 11
Yes, that was specifically promoted as "feature" to disable Cortana on Win11 lol
When I installed my Dragonfly Elite one year ago (at least before I returned it), the first line of promoted features: - Remove Cortana
no offense but you obviously never tried to get rid all of them. I'm working with WinPE loading custom built OS (not to mention long before this OEM exclusive and very useful tool was finally released for public access few years ago), wasting my time in powershell to forcefully remove Cortana and had to redo this offline to make sure Windows Update can longer reinstall w/o my permission. Now I somehow managed to make Bing stay away but this shit is infested in our system like cancer. search engine combined with bing suggestions, bing/cortana AI solutions following step by step and the entire MS ecosystem takes again time to setup every single app to stop redirecting to Edge/Bing.
gpedit.msc only works on Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise, I wanna see you telling such advice to everyone having Home edition or whatever.
and you should read what we were talking about once more. I'm talking about removal and not just disable it. Everyone can just disable it somewhat and it's still no removal at all
Have you tried to remove Edge on Win11? They seriously are on collion course with CJEU. It can only take another decade... MS vs EU 2:0 lol
no I need it for testing frontends and viewing PDFs
oh i see
After Dwarden told me Opera was sold to Chinese in 2016, I'm in a little situation. I wanna unload Chrome but not exactly a fan of Edge or Firefox either...
from my experience, trying to forcefully remove any essential components is just going to end up in a lot of problems.
theres a reason why it isnt easily done. is there a reason as to why certain nuisances are essential now? probably not. but its the way it is
also im fairly certain every group policy has an underlying registry key. there was a site for browsing these, forgot it..
Win10 was perfectly fine until MS decided to push back Edge, saying Edge is not IE and bypassing the CJEU ruling. I must congratulate them for this bold move but I simply hate them even more too π
as for removing edge, it would only be possible if webview was a standalone component.
i dont think its impossible for them to make webview work for other chromium based browsers. but it does sound like an extremely tedious thing to maintain
iirc webview is meant to more or less replace the legacy IE com object
"YouTube been sluggish lately? Turns out the site's increasing the CPU usage of AdBlock users, and it could be intentional."
Article from PC Gamer
lol
I have a question, i've made a unit and registered it, linked my BIN and Steam accs but i can't see the unit inside the game or in the launcher.
And the internet is not really helping either.
Run this every time after win update https://github.com/AveYo/fox/blob/main/Edge_Removal.bat
Use old school approach https://armasquads.com/ ||Π»Π°ΠΊΡΠ΅ ΡΠ΅||
Can you give me any guidance?
im having a dejavu, a nightmare of code lines π
That site automatically creates squad.xml for you https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/squad.xml
Just run it like admin and you will be edge-free π― π«‘
what if you set windows firewall to block everything except the apps you allow?
low key hoping telemetry is not hardcoded to be allowed
default deny out on windows will be an extreme pain if you use the built in firewall. e.g., you will have to make new rules for programs if their parent folder(s) change after an update.
apps like netlimiter does make it way easier though, you can use partial paths with it
a lot of telemetry is heavily integrated into critical apps, mostly those for microsoft store.
blocking domains can be a good option, but similarly, only if those domains are not also used for other important stuff
funny how the best option when it comes to using windows, and not wanting your data to be sold, is deep packet inspection
I might try this, for science
Did the EU show any interest in slapping Microsoft for background data collection without ability to opt out?
"only" a clean interface and even that is already too much for Windows users. Just look at Mac users and you know the casual average behavior.
They still collect data regardless, so we can just wait for EU to take further actions
precisely, always looks easy on the surface. I've encountered a bluescreen and it's been a long while when I had one since WinXP lol
the problem is that I doubt EU can take any significant action. you aren't really being forced to use the OS. i mean, will you lose out on a lot of software and tools if you use linux instead? yes, but I don't think their control over the IT sector is criminal.
if anything was to happen, whether it would be an anti-competitive or a data privacy fine, it is going to be relatively miniscule. they will probably come up with hundred more ways of collecting telemetry or restricting control over the OS components.
opting for FOSS is nice because you know your data is probably not being stolen. but that also means that you have to take care of everything that it entails, sudden crashes and such. that's why I would never use a linux distro as my main OS, it's just way too much effort
One of the two most important antitrust battles were USA vs MS and Sun Microsystems vs MS (later taken over and continued as EU vs MS).
The ruling in USA was a major success, seriously a landmark decision, but it was later overturned by selecting new judges for the entire supreme court and revision of the previous ruling.
Sun was a sad story too, they started to blame MS in public, pouring their rss in fighting MS and ultimately resulting in their downfall. The remants were later sold to Oracle as we remember.
Both USA as well as EU successfully forced MS to change some of their business practices later on but it's pretty much impossible to change their market dominance atm.
Basically it was all about these:
- business practice
- Access to other networking solutions
- Windows Media Player
- Internet Explorer
- Bing
And I hope Linux takes some lessons from Google how to provide opensource... If they cannot fix this, I doubt I will ever run Linux as main OS either
here's a funny thought experiment: people prefer not using Linux (for desktop) because most of their favorite software does not run on Linux and software development companies do not build their software for Linux because not enough people use it
quite a conundrum
And Linux development is a hell scape too.
Recently tried to build a Arma mod on linux..
Fails to build because compiler is out of date and doesn't support current standards.
Cannot install newer compiler because linux distribution doesn't support it (Its from 2017).
To fix it compile the whole compiler yourself. Okey. 4 hours later. Okey latest compiler, now I can finally..
Oh, even latest brand spanking new compiler version, doesn't support features from 3 years ago.. Well need to Adjust my code.
Next day, okey code adjusted and specifically removed comfortable usage of new features and added linux specific workarounds. Code now looks horrid, but I can build!
Oh the compiler crashes when building my project...
Maybe try other compiler, nope that crashes too but in different places and misses even more features.
One day later, edited code alot to workaround multiple compiler crashes. Finally project builds.
Now just run game with it.. Fails to start because glibc version is too old.
Fuck this, install new different linux distro in a VM.
Now I can compile and run the project on this VM, but it requires newer glibc than my main server has. So I cannot run the mod on the main server I use...
Meanwhile windows
Install latest visual studio. Development/Build machine must be windows 10 (But windows server back till 2016 would work), but can compile and the result will work even back down to windows XP.
Latest and greatest C++ features supported, very up to date. No compiler crashes encountered.
With windows development, I have to make sure my code is correct and works.
With linux development, my code must be correct and I shall not use most of the things that were standardized in the last.. 4 years.. And after that I'll spend days fucking around with broken compilers and library issues.
though one treasure available on linux is davinci resolve
there are many people using Linux for their workstations but it's a very small number and is going to be small for as long as people are not able to do basic things like ms office (no, open source office suites are all worse)
when I do software development for infrastructure working on Linux is fine, arguably better than on Windows for a bunch of reasons, but I need to be on Windows because on Windows I can do all of my work, not just a part of it
I do wish Docker on Windows didn't intercept my http and dns requests tho so I don't have to start every single container with explicit --dns parameter to use something not reachable through the default gateway
just use docker in a wsl distro directly. docker desktop is the biggest tumor ive come across in development
I might do it this way as well then
Sideloading for iOS users in the EU https://9to5mac.com/2024/01/15/apple-sideloading-ios-eu-soon/
And yet Android made it possible, even surpassed iOS, I wonder what stops Linux from doing same, takes some courage if nothing else
love how our city's tram service has endless redundancy for the ticket system in their app. as for seeing if your ride is cancelled or delayed through the app, it stops working after the tiniest amount of stress lmfao
also no preparation made for bad weather during this time of the year. with all this they're increasing the ticket prices
we have been exporting any competent developers for the past decade or so anyway, so the app part makes sense I guess
was it because it came on lower cost devices than iOS? more accessible and could do most of the things iOS could do - linux desktop currently can't do most of the things windows or mac does
although at the time symbianos was a thing, but then shortly after it wasnt
not only did some android devices cost like $10, to develop apps for iphone you need XCode. and XCode is only available on macOS.
of course you can virtualize macOS, TOS whatever, but afaik there is 0 HW acceleration so the performance is kinda shit.
you CAN virtualize macOS with hardware acceleration... on macOS
i will find u
ive thought of buying a used mac though. i should check the prices again
honestly, mac mini preferably. cant stand those silly keyboards
if it's just for low system requirement dev work then yea
yknow what, i might just give virtualized macOS another shot. maybe things have gotten better
No hw acceleration - not even safari works
I'll be the first if that Linux "father" wakes up from his imaginary throne and starts thinking like Google. Once they provide active support, I cannot imagine others wouldn't follow especially because they have to pay shitload of money to Apple and MS (and Google if you sell apps inside their store)
side note since we brought up wsl, they finally added auto-resizing to the underlying disks. so you dont have to manually shrink it everytime you work with large disk files
Right. To virtualize mac properly I need a mac.
I would run all the OS's if I could, for testing purposes.
I've been in too many situations where 99% of the users have no issues at all, but this one person on OSX or iOS is a returning pain in the ass because Apple decided to not support something or breaks in one way or another without reason...
And no, I don't plan to buy all possible combinations of hardware and software...
because the things I do rely on software that doesn't work on Linux and there are no competent alternatives
I also wanted to do browser testing for my apps with Safari, hence VM
that subreddit has VMs against rules π¦
i forgot to say i tried sonoma in vmware yesterday, almost had an aneurysm
is macos kvm faster?
i seen most guide have qemu examples.. seems like there are a lot of complex options
I need hw acceleration for safari so it's not feasible to virtualize it on windows
one guide showed mac in WSL docker.. might give that a shot
i have vt-d but i want to run this on my laptop mainly, no dedicated gpu
sucks intel scrapped gvt-g for 11 gen CPUs
except for some desktop ones
wow if there are workarounds and special steps required it means it's not worth the time
obviously gpu passthrough will help with 3d stuff, but i think its mostly what you are talking about helping the most; the special qemu/kvm options
I'll just get a macbook pro for free or something
one very common use case for tech support/sysadmins, i have heard
still wouldn't want to be behind everyone else who know macOS though
a lot of our devs develop on macos and are very happy
which openSUSE
i think its always good to run an OS with some corporations actively using it..
not to suck apple off too much, not personally a big fan either, but the simplicity is what gave them the edge in both hardware (bandwidth) and software (usability)
what would you like MacOS to have that it currently doesn't? compared to your Linux desktop
like for making a window stick to 1/4 of the screen in the corner?
there's an app called Rectangle that does window snapping, it would be cool if it was native tho
a part of it has to be due to less customizability and such
I agree with you, if you limit the number of options users have then obviously less ways for them to break it
then again, if we're talking critical vulnerabilities on a firmware level.. then didn't most of the ones on windows come from shit like Intel ME/SGX
Yea let's not talk about their pricing, since they bill 700 dollars for a set of 4 wheels for the mac pro
ewaste is a big aspect that ive previously seem them to just completely ignore.. maybe even work against it by introducing hardware DRM
What's their manufacture cost and sale price of a macbook pro? I feel like the margin is grossly high
high probably, but probably not that high if you factor in the engineering costs.. they probably get paid a ton
apple engineers are very smart though
I feel like upgrades for apple follow the pricing model of authorized car dealer service
the internal cable?
i havent heard any problems, except for people not inserting them correctly or not removing them while doing repair work.. resulting in shorted components
you figure they will opt for CAMM in the future? feel like anything removable will be out of character for apple..
yep..
I hope eventually linux desktop lets me do everything windows can (natively)
desktop environment? seems trivial to me if I can't natively run my graphics design software, game engines and even ms office in the first place
gnome has been horrible for me personally, but iirc KDE still had some issues.. mostly the repos for my distro not shipping the latest KDE versions, which means i miss out on a lot of important patches
thats another aspect too, most linux distros ive came across were under the impression that you are running decade-old devices
its been a while since i tried KDE on ubuntu. i hope its a bit better nowadays
Not always if you think back and check one of their iphone generations having >200 mini screws inside lol
That's precisely what they do. I once penetrated their market by offering upgrades with Samsung SSDs instead. They didn't like it, two years later they threatened their premium partners to cancel their partnership if they work outside the Apple boundaries. So... sounds pretty much like VW conglomerate, doesn't it?
There is a workaround if they offer you full service in every Apple store. They managed to continue using lightning despite EU set standards for USB-C. If they introduce "removable/replaceable" design as well as right to repair, they will find ways to delay that decision for many years too
And it's pretty interesting that Dell themselves advocate for a full revert from soldering concept
Apple stands no chance if the big 3 assemblers turn around. Apple pretty much lost their entire desktop business already and their macbook business is sinking ship too. All they do now is ripoff their existing loyal lemmings by providing more expensive luxury.
At the end Apple remains superior in two things: software and life style
Debian from 2019
The compiler is crashing because their implementation is bugged. I know why its crashing. Yes sure I could spend a couple hours making clean repros and bug tickets for GCC to hope that they maybe fix it within weeks or months. But on windows I need to do nothing like that.
^ That is what it boils down to.
I can solve my compiler problems with alot of workarounds. And I can fix that "old OS" issue by manually compiling a old glibc and then compiling a compiler targeting that and then compiling with that compiler.
That just takes a short couple days to figure out, with barely any guideance online on how to do so..
sounds literally like pain in the ass by book definition
I primarily develop things to run on Linux but even with my limited experience developing for Windows (Unity, Unreal Engine) I still view Windows development as more user friendly, I guess it largely depends on what it is that you are doing and I only have limited experience
Relevant π
ok that leaves us speechless π
In fact they are and that's why closed source sells much better. Open source "enthusiasts" usually try to hook you by telling you how scalable opensource is (if you work your ass off and do their job) and the perks of "free" license (basically zero support because you don't pay for anything). It's simply dumb if someone wants my business opinion on this
Google showed how it's done. Provide opensource with support and make them addicted to free services
Wait are you talking about project Aura from Google? There are so many projects or services out there named Aura, can't tell apart
Yes and that makes me wonder why our father of Linux cannot do. He is literally having public rants about how "bad" nonopensource is but in fact his product is just garbage
His product is the linux kernel. And that is amazingly good.
The F-tons of distributions built ontop of it, create lots of fragmentation which is shit
Yes ofc, I'm having an eye on that. Unfortunately consumer products are under review since 2022 because they failed us with too many Alienware scam and questionable inside quality of lower-end workstations but I do hope one big assembler can push forward things like concept Luna.
Ever since Michael Dell returned, I purchased their stocks (I'm a lovely stock parasite, enjoying short-term benefits lol)
True, I should be more precise. His kernel allowed lot of things (but lot of bad things too) but his public rants remain very true
I'm no fan of android, I doubt this OS has any chance to get a stand in desktop market, they tried many times and failed so far. I would rather believe PS OS has a higher chance lol
But I was talking about Google's marketing concept and how they approach customers with opensource
Linux community is doing it all wrong in that regard
They are fixated on the very definition of "opensource", indicating its all "DIY" and that sucks. No dev and no customer will ever agree to that
Yeah that's the point lol
But are they wrong? I mean honestly π
The only difference between G and A:
- Apple still believes you are an idiot but provides you a proper idiot-safe solution
Our future selfs have to solve that hahaha
I remember we had a real weird idea long time ago. They wanted us to leave office, join a full packed Saturday in any large store and try to sell the same products our soldiers are selling out there. I learned one valuable lesson from that
80% either believe you or not, they don't care about facts in first place
20% seek facts and do listen but it's no sales pitch, it's a discussion at the end lol
yep, they do not, its a fact
I'm bleeding out by purchasing lot of things which are NOT made in China or any other questionable country out there but I failed at two things: pc components and sport gear
thanks to u.s. trade war and covid, things escalated and more pc components are producted outside china, even back in the usa and europe but i doubt we can just eliminate foxconn honai or however the natives call them
Same for .NET since microsoft started embracing linux.
.NET development targeting linux is a breeze. Because its just the same thing as windows and stuff "just" works.
Okey yeah, excluding GUI stuff.
I've never tried to make a GUI on linux (except when running inside wine)
Or rather.. The GUI I made is a web-UI using blazor. Which isn't really "on" linux I guess.
MS embracing linux... sounds almost like a provocation to linux daddy
Too bad I chose the wrong patch in my career... we should have challenged them and create our own software π
WSL2 is a regular HyperV VM which can be setup to run docker containers if needed
a lot of stuff doesn't work is just the motto of linux either way
they have made plenty advancements the past few years imo.. support for systemd and GUI apps
though imagine they start exposing block devices in wsl. probably wont happen anytime soon
the wsl2 distros run using the same tech as docker but they are not docker containers themselves
you can attach physical disks as block devices
you can only mount partitions afaik
use --bare
must've skipped this section https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/wsl2-mount-disk#mounting-a-partitioned-disk
thats nice though
so WSL is actually very capable
Well lets see
"Recommended Enterprise set up with Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, Intune, and Advanced Networking Controls"
I knew it
They all know cybersecurity is a nice sidebusiness with lot of potential
HP pushed their endpoint solution much earlier here because they knew MS will have a home advantage inside their own system
my bucket list for 2024/25
- serious Linux competitor
- Qualcomm desktop CPU
- Intel Arc next gen at least on AMD level
Nooo... Not more architectures to support for my Docker images.
It already takes hours to build them now...
oops I found problem number 2 in Windows, long file names cannot be deleted, copied, moved in File Explorer, don't ever download 20 paypal invoices as 1 file
what's the downside?
Not every application supports it
hope file explorer does
then again I usually don't have files with names longer than the shoulder width of ben swolo
it has limited support iirc
file explorer doesnt, ive tested before, had to use powershell to mess with
If I remember its kind of buggy how it 'works'
technically, you can manually give it a deeper path
but you can't navigate there
how I tested is I just made a folder 1234567890
and I kept making subfolders like that
and I tried clicking through them
you can't make files or navigate past that....but I think you could get to 1 deeper if you manually gave it the path
and you could make files again
I tested like a year and a half ago
so I dont remember
wasup
u experienced with pc specs?
?
I was responding to bacon about the long paths flag in windows
since I remember more details
yh ik
just asking
are u?
I thought they already did a while ago.
I wasn't able to find that button on the search results for atleast a year
they've for sure started scrapping cached versions since a while ago. this is probably just a final nail in the coffin
i just dont see how its greatly improved after covid showing how fragile our βbroadbandβ network is
Anyone know how do I get a range slider as a product ~~attribute ~~ option in WooCommerce for something like selecting width or height of a product?
There are quite some plugins out there which implement that, at least for filters (and some also add it to the product options); although most of them are paid or outdated...
We ended up building one ourselves
Yeah, there's 384523 plugins out there. All I need is just a range slider that affects the price.
I could find it on occasion
Very annoying they killed it
Yet another form of shrinkflation and another symptom of monopoly
any good software for making PCBs and stuff from scratch? im looking at kicad right now, idk if theres anything better thats free
im afraid paid solutions still outclass free versions
well, i understand like 1% of what i see in kicad right now so ill use it as a starting point at least
i need to read up on "FULL BRIDGE RECTIFIER"s
uhm... someone said it would be easier to just gut a namebrand USB charger
im going to make some kind of ESP32 contraption.. looking to smart-ify my dumb dehumidifier
yeah the thing is, the last hardware course i had was like years ago
and it was for a custom architecture the university built
im pretty sure they built it from scratch
there was an article for it somewhere 1 sec
yea
well
one sec.
bear with me
its an actual microprocessor
heres the handbook i have, its in swedish though https://www.cse.chalmers.se/edu/year/2014/course/EDA216/FlisProcessorHandbok-A4.pdf
that's the simulator or whatever.. in a later course we worked with the machine itself https://www.cse.chalmers.se/edu/resources/mop/documents/MD407_beskrivning.pdf
oh yeah it's just ARM. never mind
i think im going to use jlcpcb for ordering the pcb itself.. not really sure if i need any components from their side though, probably source most of it myself
ESP32 kit from amazon.. wasnt that high of a markup on it last time i saw
concerning the usb power supply, its hard to find decent dumb ones (i.e. usb-a). i used to buy from belkin and they had decent voltage output (no sub 4.9v you get with offbrand ones). also very little audible noise when low load
they dont sell em anymore, at least not the single output variants
how come?
if its concerning them stealing my schematics, I highly doubt that'd be an issue
naurr thats foul.
also there are consequences in my case. eh, kinda.
oh wow theyve built asset ripping into their driver
based
wtf
ill try rtx remix today with morrowind hopefully its decent
@brisk inlet
too much software for our inofficial mod π
ill try it with cyberpunk
i forgot to try.
the max payne rtx remix was kinda meh. visual glitches here and there
So somebody make like a tutorial video for Rtx Remix tool π
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8jehCPUu0Jk
hoping at some point this gets me RTX in reforger
is it decent?
I remember seeing some footage last year, IGN's "teaser" used upscaled texture pack and some other mods to make the assets look better, then I watched some guy testing the demo rtx and it struggled to render most of stuff around
https://youtu.be/j9FZwzPRT4M that's the one
#rtxon #rtxremix #nvidia #rtx #morrowind
βΊDrop a LIKE π and SUBSCRIBE β if you wan see more video!
Remember To Click The Bell π
!Hi On these Video My test morrowind a had some terrain issues a find fix By toggle On Terrain Baker but Is Super Gpu Intensive on Remix And A Try Out Openmw To fix Distant but did t Work with Remix So i Use MGEXE ...
i lied. im sorry

oh i had a feeling that was the case
very few playable games.. and what does that even entail though? like, it just runs or it runs good w/o a lot of visual glitches?
according to the video I posted above it adds reflective surfaces for the cost of breaking their rendering and it barely runs. i don't have an RTX card to check that for myself
I've seen Doom with RT and it looked cool although I don't think it was done with Remix, rather a proper engine addon
there needs to be a twist on modmanager/vortex imo. something that configures QOL modpacks for older games automatically
for example, setting up i heart vanilla for morrowind was kind of tedious since i dont spend a lot of time modding games and such
rtx remix wont flourish by itself. these older games have always been brought back through an active modding community. might as well stick to creating/maintaining modpacks instead of spending time on rtx remix
they have a list of supported games on trello https://trello.com/b/c4NgbGoL/rtx-remix-compatibility
not sure if it's an official list or not, though
any recommended apps that would work on top of the default Win10 audio mixer? They fucked something up again in recent updates and when my "general" audio is less than 100%, sometimes other apps lower their volume automatically. Chrome manually set to play at 50% and after few hours I notice it went down to 15. I have all audio ducking stuff disabled wherever I could.
it's been bothering me for a good dozen weeks but now I think I have enough lol
oh my god I had that issue as well let me see what I turned off to get rid of it
I think it went away when I uninstalled the realtek audio driver
just using the generic windows one
New tool from Nividia Chat RTX Yt video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gdsRJZT3IJw&t=60s&ab_channel=NVIDIAGeForce
I remember some of us had this weird nonsense extra keyboard layout appearing in win10 out of nowhere and being super persistent...
Now this weird shit waa-latn unknown locale appeared out of nowhere
As usual there was no other way but to force your way through powershell:
$LanguageList = Get-WinUserLanguageList
$LanguageList.Add("qaa-latn")
Set-WinUserLanguageList $LanguageList -Force
and this shit then appears in the language menu ready for removal
Just in case someone else faces the same issue again
Anyone know of windows Sandboxing solutions that don't require setting up a VM.
I want all applications inside the sandbox to run inside it (cannot see other running applications or OS files).
Have separated files (Not in User/X/AppData, but in its own special place. For example like linux Wine stores files).
Most importantly files should persist. I want a separated container, but not one that deletes itself everytime I close it.
There is Windows Sandbox, but files don't persist. (Ex. https://github.com/microsoft/Windows-Sandbox-Utilities/issues/32 "Hey you can just map a folder and reinstall the app every launch" ugh).
There is Sandboxie, but its paid and I don't know if it actually allows for files to persist.
Surely there must be some solution for this without a VM
Reading further into it. I think a Windows Sandbox with a script that always maps some folders would work, for apps that can be ran without installation.
I tried Docker on windows once.
Faffed around for a day and gave up
Maybe Podman works better
Though... How do I get the UI for a GUI application out of the container?
I'm running windows applications on windows
I don't need a full VM, I just need a sandbox around a program, like Sandboxie does
Docker works except it intercepts http and dns, and has some other gotchas
Exposing a port stops docker from intercepting outgoing dns queries?
I work around this by just specifying the resolver with --dns and will probably keep doing so until they fix this nonsense
why are you suggesting host network for windows docker?
I am talking about docker for windows, host networking isn't available on docker for windows
no idea what you are on about
Sandboxie has persistence
or had when I last used it anyway
Indeed Sandboxie works for one of the things I need. But opening Discord in it doesn't work it just kills itself π€
Discord is super important
I'm amazed you guys find time to do that or is that part of your job?
I gave up on Linux stuff long time go, pushed me to the limits that I was close to go mad
Windows containers are a thing. I donβt mean docker.
mmm, would you consider windows containers in hyper-v isolation mode that
lol
its technically a vm though
mmm, I assume trying to emulate what qubes does?
i guess microsoft never added the templates to their sandbox thing
linux discord works with WSL2 though lol
then all you need to do is try to use wine in WSL2
lol
I wonder if you could setup windows appvm templates in qubes though
because that'd function how you want, but idk if you can get the HW resources like GPU working how you want
quadro cards should pass through perfectly
because that should function how described wanted
hopefully they add templating to windows sandbox one day
that is how I wanted to use it tbh
is it technically or is it actually
it being a vm is not the problem
the vm being too heavy is more the problem to my understanding
containers are light in their nature
I don't remember reading most of the bullshit you wrote because I know this already and you're not the one asking.
I suppose it's a better start if the one asking specifies why he wants win sandbox, container and/or standard vm. No need to be salty, it's your choice whether you read/answer or not
Fortunately that is not exactly my concern. I already know why it's not possible but it would be much easier for the sake of discussion if the purpose/intension is further explained. Even if the one asking wants something, that doesn't mean MS will/can change it overnight
or ever
winget just downnloads and runs exe's
and tbh
the windows dependency system is superior
it avoids dependency hell
fuck linux package managers
all of them suck
ok bro
DNF is probably the sole package manager with no visible downside but the lack of support is the very definition of killer argument in the entire linux world imo. All others have serious issues including what Owl just mentioned compared to Windows
Some of them don't even have automatic dependency handling, i mean wtf lol
I suppose for devs it is one big choice but I cannot say much about it as I stopped using/tinkering Linux for way too long
"get used" is the one thing I failed at Linux
To be fair I'm still forced to use powershell and cmd quiet often these days. Apple is no different, their inflexible system forces me to access dev console to break things through as I wanna have it done. But this is precisely what I'd like to avoid at home... I don't mind to face challenges at work but at home I want none of it.
Maybe because I'm getting older lol (and I was lazy as fuck for all eternity already)
I believe it was no coincidence that "stable" windows era changed my mind about Linux for good (speaking of user-level)
Windows at the beginning was a serious nightmare
they may have automatic dependency handling
the dependency handling is insufficiently robust
DNF is unreliable and slow, and iirc it's still a beta project of RedHat's
and one day they will rename beta to early access just like game studios are trying hard π
thanks god certain software, especially paid OS, are a thing of the past
ok user-OS that is
does any1 have a good signal analyzer program? looking at sigrok right now.. open source and verified to work with the cheap china tool i bought
What signals are you analyzing
well...
probably simple stuff like i2c and spi
i did want to catch UART too but I guess I could just connect two of those CH340G USBs inline
remember to change your epic games password and password in all services that happened to use the same passwords
they got hacked?
I see they said that the hacking group didn't even contact them and there is 0 evidence of anyone breaking the webz
well hackers don't always hack for the same reason either
if something happens I'll just sue epic games
I need an excuse to change my passwords anyway so net positive for me
yall think the 2FA feature in all password managers is incredibly counterproductive? this one TA brought this up following my presentation. was a good point tbf
No
go on
no more bets
tbh I don't remember that someone ever managed to hack my passwords, although there have been some attempts from suspicious countries nobody would suspect. Most incidents are either stupid passwords even wonnabes can crack on their own or so careless that even nonprofessionals remain speechless, i.e. believes in anti virus and downloading all kind of shit, visiting all kind of sites or hardcore believer in no internet security and wonders why something happens one day
surprisingly most attempts were aimed at my MMO accounts and top tier game accounts from games like diablo2. I first thought it's ridiculous but then again I saw girls selling their body for ingame trophies, so... I'm at loss in this matter. it's beyond my understanding
my advice: better safe than sorry
back when I used basic pwds on accounts I didn't care about and some of them got leaked, got twitch and blizzard account hit, blizzard shut down the account and twitch banned me for awhile mmm, might be a few others.
Since I switched to complex pwd's and started using pwd managers, never had an account broken since
but pretty sure some of my complex pwds are leaked, but with pwd manager they are all different so doesn't really matter
I can't remember any of the 2 factors ever saving me
by the time 2 factor was a thing I was already using unique pwds for everything through pwd managers
print working directory managers
indeed, only helps if its demanded every single time and thatβs a hassle for me tbh. another alternative is an USB key or card key which doesnt really make it more comfortable. im thinking of a pw manager too if more providers force me to change pw every yearβ¦
its really annoying when the only 2fa option provided by a site is SMS tokens..
to my own surprise during covid there were frequent attempts to hack my MS service accounts but that stopped quickly afterwards
I want a 2FA with confirmation prompts instead of stupid one time passwords
not that one time passwords are stupid but my otp authenticator app has like 50 codes
I'm already pissed that I have to use the Microsoft Authenticator App which does precisely that as you say. That is a total trash and everything but comfortable and if the involved device is hacked, that shit ain't everything but secure either
If people desire 100% security I don't see a reliable solution which works without two independent devices from each other.
2fa with confirmation prompts are already in service, it's just a question of who is providing it
one issue with prompts instead of codes is that the developers of the service you are logging into have to bother checking if you have confirmed the prompt instead of just waiting for a code
It's just like another pill from pharmaceuticals at the end. thanks to govs in different countries not working together the root of problem just continues to grow
for anyone using firefox android https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/comments/1b4n48c/firefox_on_android_runs_much_better_after/ such a big difference.. sucks how good defaults are just not a thing anymore
and why does firefox doesn't do those tweaks on their own for vanilla? lol
oh wait ublock includes ad content blocker, dont tell me thats the reason why things are not loading faster π
lol there are some things in its config that could make it slower as it says in the post.. but on vanilla firefox, with default settings, its still a bad experience
on my samsung phone RAM management is just horrible. apps getting killed left and right, even ones that i try to "lock"
does GDrive have a function (or is there an extension) to search for items only within a specific folder? The default search bar goes through whole drive, I need it to browse only a single directory (like the one I have currently opened)
filters - location - more locations - find folder there
ah thanks
thats real sad⦠they sit on so much money, have top inhouse RAM but unable to manage it lol
The problem here is Samsung and nothing else
eh, ff android has objectively dogshit defaults
but next phone will def not be a samsung. even the flagships got issues
Samsung would have less problems if they didn't stubbornly try to "tune up" the vanilla Android as they see fit because they shouldn't try to be Apple if they have no brains for it.
jesus christ I received 3 updates from Nvidia over the last few weeks, wtf is wrong with them
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/03/rip-to-the-windows-subsystem-for-android-which-goes-away-in-2025/ am i surprised.. nop. me mad though..
probably too many people who used the modified WSA packages on github. and not enough people bringing in value by installing it the regular way, i.e., you end up with Amazon Appstore (=money for MS, incentive to keep the WSA project active)
installing chatwithrtx 100gb later.. https://i.imgur.com/AnND8ra.png
dont give up hope yet, EU has a wideranged crackdown ongoing, trying to enforce open intercompatibility between dominant systems aka Apple, Google, Linux, MS etc
in about two years we will know more
Doesn't seem like a loss.
If I want Android apps I use BlueStacks or run the android dev environment emulator.
Both of them actually have play store access
Not much reason for EU doing anything.
Interoperability has already been there before, and continues to still be there
Apple is everything but compatible with other systems
And compatibility in consumer terms means you don't need extra tools to make it run. This is why EU aims at Apple and many others. Even MS is better at this lol
What I do not understand is if people desire to connect Android, an OS designed for smaller mobile devices, to large screens and other fancy ideas which was never the idea of it. I would understand if Google desires to enter the desktop market but so far they failed at it with ChromeOS or whatever name they nonstop change
Third parties are automatically at loss if they are on bad terms with Apple, Google and/or MS and that's the basic proof why EU decided to take actions. This is everything but free market. Once an ecosystems grows too large and has certain number of users, we cannot simply say "hey its your choice, take it or leave it"
bluestacks sends my data to china peoples. i want it to be sent to america only
I want my data to not be sent to america peoples. Sadly I don't get any choice
Well did you know how MS and few others now promote their services to EU people? They "store" it somewhere in Ireland π€£
Yes Ireland is still Europe but that country is not exactly on my favorite list because they are way too friendly with such taxmonger holdings
mr tencent will never get my data
uncle sam on the other hand..
apparently the libraries backing the OEM firmware on my humidifier is from tencent too. halp
My data is literally exposed to one single company: MS
but they are not allowed to send outside of Switzerland because they are not my direct provider.
It's fine that Uncle Sam has my information but if someone from the east gets it then that's a problem π ...live in Orwell's 1984 π
didnt read about that change allowing for alt appstores.. its actually very good.. thought EU couldnt pull through with such a move
might actually consider an iphone in the future then
only thing holding me back is the difficulty of sideloading stuff.
as for android, what advantage does it have over ios really? i mean its open source, but all of the vendor libraries and such are 0's&1's. in the case of samsung, if you even try to flash your phone with an android rom an efuse will just nuke itself and you lose many features permanently
its open source, but in practice, the system will be locked up. might as well go for an iphone where they care about the UX
Despite what Dedman said, EU pulled lot of things (not all of their ideas worked out well but most part it was a big win for consumers all along)
Why would Apple and Facebook send their CEOs directly to Brussel to meet a "mere" head of investigation if EU's doings were no threat? US gov is humiliated because they even failed at better data protection laws
yeah even if they can be meme'd about sometimes, EU has done a lot to halt exploitation of consumers
the biggest issue still imo is that many companies in e.g. germany&italy are reselling goods from aliexpress. fake CE&TUV certs, etc. there has to be more control imo. biggest offender is amazon, the only marketplace where you can buy so many things to unintentionally burn your house down with
a heater i bought from amazon a while ago was recalled by the local authority here, but amazon didnt notify me at all lmao
I wish they had more inspections but especially Germany and Italy have lack of menpower in customs office. They managed to get rid of many fake goods but China is just flooding more than they can handle (pretty much the same tactics like Israels friends doing with Irondome lol, yeah tasteless comparison but its simply true...)
Amazon marketplace is in fact out of control and still competitionless in many countries because competition simply sucks at everything. They don't wanna invest in anything, they don't wanna hire well paid workforce, just do nothing and hope to follow Amazons footprint
Greece is the new terminal for China anyway. They officially purchased the bankrupt sea and airports there, haven't they celebrated a recent IPO there too? and not to mention Greece is a perfect backdoor into entire EU, much better than Italy and Germany where everything is more strict and more expensive
Hamburg seaport ain't cheap you know
Have you heard of the Schwarz Group? They are the parent company of Kaufland and Lidl, one of the largest trade groups worldwide and top3 in Germany too. They somehow managed to launch the first successful copy of Amazon marketplace
i think for banggood they used netherlands for VAT evasion. they've changed it now though, probably collecting VAT but keeping it in their own pockets lol
But Rotterdam ain't easier to get fake goods through either, VAT evasion is a different matter that fails in Italy too
VAT evasion tells a part of the story if you think about it
send a shipment full with lithium batteries -> declare as toys or whatever
low value declared = no/less VAT, wrong item declared = they dont know you're moving batteries
unless you know, they just open the package
e.g. Hongkong didn't even have VAT at all, so I don't feel sorry for the countries
They create more taxes and more excuses but we get little back
But I'm fully aware of the VAT cheats
Btw speaking of Amazon:
Amazon Germany was at >33b turnover 2022, last year its estimated at >46b which is insane again
The former no. 1 powerhouse Otto barely managed to finally reach 10b last year lol
Germany's economy is fucked already. 70% are price-oriented, they don't care much about quality, buy everything with PayPal purchase protection which doesn't really fix the issues with fake goods, bad dealers and cheaters
i read this one dudes post on the small business subreddit. he was complaining about his VAT liability because it made him keep very little of what he made.
read more replies from him in the thread and i just had a complete change of mind lmfao
hes basically buying cheap asf tech from china and reselling it locally. then he uses pakistanis/indians for the tech support
the markup on the stuff he sells was like 15x or something
Vat is a good way to tax unemployed people, sucks for business owners
At least there's no vat for purchases coming to me from other EU countries
I'm bypassing VAT legally with paper company (by paying all taxes, they can blow me). It's not always possible obviously but I think 80% of the purchases end up vat-free because I'm an employee of my own company and it's self-consumption which is 100% legit.
We learn such things and many other stuff from rich people telling you how to stay rich.
I'm pretty sure together with AI there will be better solutions to fix that too but lot of people will first lose their jobs as usual.
Wouldn't be surprised if I'm one of them, AI is an industrial revolution on a complete different lvl
Only way I don't pay vat here is if the purchase is a business expense, so at least most of my gear and fuel
Some part of private expenses can be changed to business ones too, e.g. car. less than 20% at my home is privately owned. car, pc, mobile devices, even services such as insurance, rent, all paid company directly.
and thanks to accounting software, its dam easy too
Im importing everything that is non swissmade anyway, so good luck to tax office. customs office tried hard too and they gave up decades ago too
the only thing i really hate is the online interface of customs office, a nightmare to work with
I might be blind, but is there a way to change discords timestamp format?
Its currently in MM/DD/YYYY hh:mm am/pm which i dont find really fancy...
<t:1710234120:f> This you mean?
Nono, like next to the each message.
Uh wait, do you see a MDY format there? This is what I see
Or more older post you mean?
That but for older posts, like older than 2 days.
it's not AM/PM for me so maybe depends on region you selected?
unless you want to switch days and months
I usually have everything in English (US), so dates are always messed up.
For Discord I use English (UK) and fixes the date/time issue π
So for me it's dd/mm/yyyy hh:ii
Oh my, changing to the English (UK) fixed the timestamps indeed. Thanks @raw elbow!
My god! That works, thanks!
Same here, ever since I decided to stay on US English for all apps, I experience less issues
What if I am Japanese but I set it to English yet I still prefer YMD
It means you are a programmer
rejected, your problem π€£
but i prefer YMD too, its always fun to adjust it manually in many apps
and what are the others π
YMD is the best
They only do it because of how happy they are to regulate American companies and how incompetent European tech companies are
eh, meh, eh
EU will soon face their first devastating defeat if they cannot get ahead of AI topics. Software companies will be uncontrollable as soon as AI gets involved in daily business. No matter how many victories they celeberate today, tomorrow is yet another matter.

link doesnt work
it did when i sent it lol, not now strange enough
no worry happens a lot
Long shot question, if anyone in here has some graphics engine experience, more specifically in Unreal but possibly in general HLSL...
Anyone know anyone familiar with Unreal's raytracing shaders? Specifically implementing custom intersection shaders? I can get all my other shaders to run, any hit, closest hit, and miss, but intersection shaders don't seem to be executed at all (hits just get the default triangle intersection attributes without any of my changes to them)
Thanks, I'll ask in there! π
can anyone recommend a company to order pentesting services for my own APIs?
Ubisoft took down The Crew and now people hope it can start a movement against games as a service that give no offline or private hosting options at the end of offical support.
it's more of a #other_games_chat thing no?
I don't see a solution on that page, how would they implement private servers for a game like the crew?

"USE THIS"/"DO NOT USE THIS"
oh yes it will/wont
I didnβt see a solution either, domain is a clear msg but thatβs it.
what happened to reverse engineering games and creating a private server mod on your own terms?
its not that its easy to do, but at least you'd know it won't suddenly stop working
DMCAs are a problem, then again i cant see someone going after a private server mod for a dead game
This is how to let an underpaid worker work
that reminds me of the guy who started building pipebombs because companies would use his terminal-color-theme library without paying
anyway, you should do things like that out of passion and not for money
building pipebombs to fuck with corpos? yes π
hes probably getting his pipe bombed in prison right now
Jonny would like to ~~ take over your body ~~ get to know you
in a world of capitalism, that luxury is reserved for people shitting money
MS made it official, support for Win10 end-users will stop at 14th Oct 2025
We have Win 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 - end date 13.01.2032
If Win12 doesn't arrive in 2025, I will probably switch to Win 10 Enterprise because my machines won't touch Win11, only over my dead body.
This tradition is ironclad rule, always skip a generation π€£
In the Windows 11 24H2 26100 build, all IoT editions (IotEnterprise, IotEnterpriseS, IotEnterpriseSK) don't require TPM.
Requirements for regular IoTEnterprise are 4GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores, while requirements for IoTEnterpriseS/SK are 2GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores.
tpm isn't bad
amd ftpm is a hilariously bad but that's more an AMD bad kind of thing
Wasn't it improved by bios updates? At the beggining it was micro freezing whole OS every now and then ;D
I'm running it off anyway to stop windows from nagging me to update to 11.
it was improved
it still causes issues from time to time
it's just not a good solution
have u guys seen the bing AI deepsearch thing yet? Looks like it automatically rephrases your search keywords/phrase a bunch of times and then collates the results together somehow
I already thought AI does a good job of looking through search results and giving you best results, which solves an issue lately with search engines where your results get buried by the most popular thing being the top 100 results
like news story happens about X topic, and all you see is 100 results talking about the newest thing about that topic, and nothing about it before that
I've found using AI search will pull out a lot of that buried stuff
the whole mobile world was so much "impressed" about Samsung translator AI, for once Samsung managed to steal the show
i really hope I will never encounter that shit on Blooomberg or they will lose one more subscriber
ive not seen that, i don't really pay attention to the junk software samsung throws on the phones
ive seen videos on phone translaters though, and the concept seems cool
i guess if you get AI to parse the audio for better recognition prob be best addition of AI to them
like using nvidias sound cleaning for it
recognition was indeed one of the big obstacles over the last years, even Apple failed at that, well they failed at AI completely which surprised me very much. After launching Siri they pretty much fell back to sleep and forgot about AI dev
the ML recognition, and voice generation are pretty huge leaps forward I think, I think next step is ML interpretation for actually kicking off UI/app actions
itll be pretty neat in a few years
that would be amazing
microsoft already integrating copilot into everything, and I'm pretty sure that is them getting prepped for that step
where you can just give general voice order to PC and it does it
Startrek speaking with computer was considered scifi humor. Later Siri was introduced as one of the first functional showcase. Lets see if MS manages to get Startrek v2 π
Ive avoided the voice command shit so far because I don't want to have to hold its hand every single step, correcting every misinterpreted word, etc. so they just ned to clean that up
already industry says AI/ML acceleration in every CPU chip from now on
welcome in club, I'm strictly against Amazon Alexa, Siri and whatever. People may blame me for being oldschool but I like good old input designs where my fingers have the power to change everything π€£
I feel we still on track for my guess that we get AR/VR UI for windows in like 2026-2030
voice command + eye tracking + gesture, us AI/ML to interpret all of those
and get intuitive navigation and actions
tell it to write an email, only have to give it like 3 sentances to write a few paragraphs
copilot for 365 pulls all your office documents and stuff together, so could feasibly pull relevant information from other documents indexed
I'm afraid China is already probing into that shit for a different purpose lol
I'm hoping ML vulnerability scanning takes a huge leap forward for developers for caching issues before release
ML code scanning to find and catch issues and improve general standard of software releases
I feel like it is pretty well suited for it
and the stuff in visual studio is already super helpful
I really hope you don't get hired by China or they will end up upgrading their existing CCTV network with super AI features detecting rebellion and any anti-gov movement just from reading your face, eyes, gestures and lips π
shit, things getting real lol
pretty sure they have an initiative to push AI features into their stuff, and they already using it
not too different from US/etc
companies selling this stuff to police
biggest problem is its still pretty inaccurate, and they treat it as if it was very accurate
0 doublechecking it
its amazing for directing your attention to relevant stuff and minimizing irrelevant stuff
but false positive rate relatively high
super useful, but not something to let run without oversight
this soon sounds like this Psycho Pass anime where people have a crime coefficient number and an AI filled with human brains take over society control
the crime coefficient stuff already a reality in china lol
in the US....its a little more hush hush
do tourist get such a rating too? π
but yea, they prob have some parts of agencies playing with ML risk assessments
profiling already long time thing
AI is just automating it lol
jesus christ i better stay way from china, I'm not sure if my crime coeffficient looks very healthy in China's understanding of "healthy" π€£
afaik they just keep tag watchers on you lol
lol
you walk around, prob some guys tracking you in case you are a 'bad influence'
why buy airtags if China sponsors you human tags π
i mean, almost certainly any of us would be fine
but it def triggers paranoia in me
i am could not find servers for PVP groups training and playing in events or making PVP events vs other servers, if you know any server that does it please DM me and thank you
