#

maybe it doesnt know how to deal with windows 11

#

will try the other stuff tomorrow

brisk inlet
#

I'm glad I still don't have to use win11 lol

wooden tendon
#

I doubt this is a win11 problem

faint notch
#

weird, on W10 it worked no problem for me, I only had the new nvme installed when I first boot after copying the drive in macrium, after it booted fine with the single nvme installed (despite complaining about missing apps from the temporarily unplugged drives) I then shutdown and reconnected/replugged my other drives, seemed to go without a hitch that way.

it could be a SecureBoot/Windows issue in looking for SB keys on the old drives device ID instead of the new one if you had the old drive still installed in the system when first booting on the new/cloned drive, SB is still a bit of a dark art to me, but it can be a royal pita with system drives.

wooden tendon
#

I might also just reinstall which would help me clean up the system a bit

faint notch
#

hah yea, gets rid of a lot of junk but cloning a drive saves all that reinstalling πŸ˜„

wooden tendon
#

hard choice, I wish windows programs didn't leave so much junk in appdata

#

actually I am booted on the new ssd, but it wont boot if I remove the old one

#

I also wish there was a search engine for windows-related problems that automatically filters out all the garbage that says to run sfc /scannow or "install this shady driver tool to fix it automatically"

I think I have clicked decline and skip like 25 times

wooden tendon

turns out I didn't have a whole lot of programs installed after all

but I need to reinstall again because Windows installer added my new system to the boot menu on the old drive

found a bug in windows 11 finally! not sure how it happened but the shutdown button doesnt work thonk (neither do other options in the menu like restart or sign out)

#

guess I'm staying logged in forever

#

doesnt work from the terminal too, wow, I guess it does the same thing

brisk inlet
#

Doesn't sound like anything new yet. Have you ever experienced clicking shutdown or update+shutdown but stupid MS decided to restart instead? It's one of those mystery bugs for our life lol

wooden tendon
#

Power button worked!

wooden tendon
#

anyone know if there's a way to disable the windows thing where it separates files and folders in details view? I want to sort everything by name

brisk inlet
#

i think you missed the most important "feature" warning before entering the world of win11

#

Even in Windows10 you would require a third party app I'm afraid. Windows settings don't offer anything to force a sorting for both files and folders

faint notch
#

Windows 11 isnt a feature, its a virus πŸ˜‚

brisk inlet
#

I wonder if they will ever manage to break free from this curse. Since Win98 I always skip one generation and wait for the next and so far it has been a good decision lol

unkempt spoke
#

MSI Center has a "free up memory" feature that seems to just flush all RAM usage for Windows apps and they "reassign" whatever number they actually need. It doesn't help with performance and if used a few times can make the PC lag a bit, but when I edit in Arma I often have a lot of things open and my RAM usage goes to 90% and over, so I just flush RAM once and it stays on ~60% (for total usage) until I start restarting apps or just restart the PC.

#

what could be a counterpart of it in Windows that I could run and get rid of this bloatware MSI has produced? πŸ˜„

#

this feature is literally the single only thing I'm using MSI Center for but this app will always install stuff I don't need and uninstalling it fully requires attention.

white knot
# unkempt spoke MSI Center has a "free up memory" feature that seems to just flush all RAM usage...

Does the performance suffer from the high RAM usage though? Unused RAM is wasted performance and modern operating systems manage it surprisingly well (e.g. assigning RAM to applications that need it the most on the fly) even if the total usage is nearing 100 %. That's kind of the point, to keep things temporally as near as possible to CPU so that it doesn't have to wait retrieval of the data it needs for ages. That's why AMD's X3D CPUs have so high performance in e.g. games, as the large caches are closer to CPU and have smaller overhead which leads to CPU waiting for data less and thus improved performance

green escarp
#

the performance suffers if arma crashes due to lack of ram

unkempt spoke
#

and I played around with different memory allocators, memory paging and nothing keeps Arma at bay as good as that flush memory thingy.

#

not to mention situations where I miss a semicolon in code and Arma starts leaking memory like crazy

white knot
#

That's interesting tbh

green escarp
#

there's 2 microsoft apps to basically do the same

#

I recommend only using them if you have a half decent ssd with half decent endurance

#

they are RAM MAP and Memory Cleaner.

technically MC is not a real microsoft app, a microsoft employee freelances it, but I like it.

#

if you can, just go for more RAM, but I understand if that's too expensive.

unkempt spoke
#

it's meant to be a temporary workaround rather than a solution, I'm on 16GB and this is more than enough for almost all stuff I do except Arma 3, where with some maps the executable can use up even 8GB in editor and then I'm stuck with little memory left for any code mistakes or sudden heavier workload in any other program.

#

I'll try the Memory Cleaner, thx

green escarp
#

RM will prove more effective, good luck.

brisk inlet
#

What's your usage load once system fully started? Before you start any specific big app

#

Just in case those memory cleaners do not include all steps, I would highly recommend to clear page file at shutdown and flush memory cache too.

#

But increasing RAM at this point is a relevant step too. 16gb is not going to cut it whether you like it or not. Ever since we jumped from Win7 to Win10, this stupid system started to waste a lot of valuable rss including RAM

#

If you insist on 16GB, you will be forced to optimize your startup apps too. Disable everything useless. Reduce Windows visual effects too if you don't need it.

#

Just in case you need a full guide, I can try to find one with google. Those people usually are better at explaining what to do than me blobcloseenjoy πŸ™ˆ

unkempt spoke
#

As I said, I am running out of memory only when I am messing with Arma scripts, there is not a single other instance I would need more ram hence my question about the ram flusher

brisk inlet
#

I hear ya. I'm just merely pointing out how their business works. By the time MS offers their own feature (would look like this; https://github.com/IgorMundstein/WinMemoryCleaner) RAM business moves forward and they dictate the price as usual. In other words, purchasing 32GB will be cheaper per GB than picking 16GB. With DDR5 this will speedup significantly within no time as soon as those blockheads recovered from covid aftermath

#

And as I already mentioned, flushing memory is one thing but if those third party apps do not include clearing page file and flushing memory cache, they just do half their job

#

You have all info you need, now it's up to you

green escarp
brisk inlet
#

Someone has to test all kind of shit πŸ™ˆ

green escarp
#

β€œTest” I prefer what I’m using to be proven and stable unlike whatever junk you’re pulling out of the clearance section

wooden tendon
#

16 gigs perfectly enough for gaming but not enough for editing

#

windows has memory compression already

#

just turn off the browser and listen to music from your smartphone

#

that's my most galaxy brain idea

white knot
brisk inlet
#

Most people wish to have bargain deals, so it's obvious that premium brands are usually out of option. I wasted two years just to test Patriot and that is how a real test works, full warranty endurance. I don't see that many reviewers anymore who would go that far, so I have to do it myself as usual

brisk inlet
wooden tendon
#

you're probably right, the average user will have more apps open because they won't realize memory usage is a thing, so less memory actually better for "power users"

brisk inlet
#

I admire honger and others still trying to manage things with what hw rss they have but I wouldn't have the patience to manually flush memory or brainstorming what third party apps would help and not end up as additional bloatware at the end πŸ˜†

#

Similar to epic loading time (which I don't like either), I dislike stressful tasks while sitting in front of my computer. Things have to run smoothly with a minimum of manual control. No extreme overclocking, no heat issue thanks to extreme cooling and no performance breakdown because system is running 24/7 worst case.

brisk inlet

Btw Apple is doing me no favor these days. Everytime they launch an update, they re-enable WLAN and BT for no reason...

warped spire
#

My surface pro is 16GB ram and is going on 4 years old, it is still plenty fast and faster than my work laptop that is 32GB of RAM (surprisingly the tablet has better cooling and stays within power envelope while laptop doesn't and throttles constantly)
I've run VM's on this tablet before, visual studio ran fine too with several tabs, can't say I've ever used memory flushing apps before.
Most windows instability I've run into is related to not ACTUALLY restarting OS (power button on a lot of laptops/etc sends them to hibernate which some people don't realize isn't actually shutting it off), and even that instability is mostly due to shit apps slowly causing issues for everything else(all apps are shit apps sadly....)
Though...PDF's open in browsers is insane RAM usage always, but in the actual application it isn't...

brisk inlet
#

And yes, Adobe is Adobe, even PDF sucks out rss easily πŸ™ˆ

for whatever reason I can't remove English "keyboard" language from my PC meowsweats It does not show up in Language settings, instead it looks like I have only the desired one lang. I added it to the preferred languages and then removed and then it was gone up until pc restart, now it's here again. Any way to get rid of it once and for all?

i hope it wasnt a preconfig oem license, will check my database bc i think someone encountered that issue some time ago too

unkempt spoke
#

I removed one language before successfully, like after last reinstall in August, I noticed it back again after recent Win10 update

#

and it's BOX license

brisk inlet
#

That's a new thing MS likes very much, every update wipes out all kind of tweaks, even if its removal of Edge or minor setting change that doesn't fit into their game.

#

Make sure its admin account and before you start the regular proceedings its really admin right enabled too (yeah sounds stupid but this is how MS works...dont ask why)
After removing the language, check registry:
normal path is computer\hkey_users.default\keyboard layout\preload

#

you should be able to navigate with mouse too

#

delete the unwanted layout there too

#

after this try restart again and hopefully windows update doesnt mess up things again too

#

I believe the registry entry and windows update fuck up together and give you a funny reborn effect on your unwanted layout

wooden tendon
#

I have this problem since windows 7. It keeps coming back at some point after getting rid of the unwanted input method. I think I'll setup some script to turn it off every boot or something when it happens again.

There were times when buying an expensive gpu could get you enough raw performance to run everything, now pay more for top gpus and you need to use dynamic resolution scaling to run things

ember finch
#

The issue is that people are running higher resolutions too.

#

I'm on ultrawide 3440x1440 and 4090 has enough raw power. But at 4k it would be problematic.

brisk inlet
# wooden tendon There were times when buying an expensive gpu could get you enough raw performan...

Two reasons why those times are over:

  • Nvidia was sleeping on their throne and did not evolve (and they failed to acquire ARM quietly)
  • People want insane high resolution from start.
One yells 4k and they jump on the train like lemmings even before enough content is ready for 4k, which is why marketing is targeting at them like that too and sadly it works. buy 4k tv now! and they buy. buy 4k gaming now! and they buy. There are some 5k and higher screens out now too. really no idea why i should bother about this right now.
#

While people were hunting 4k, I'm still sitting on 1440 and there is really no need to pump muscles with 4k for gaming. The only reason why I would need 4k is my work but thanks god I'm not in visual department, 4k for home office and management is still a luxury no matter what people say.

#

And TehFocus made the point, some people will need DLSS and RT because as soon as they start gaming, they won't see the ugly differences that much because they focus on gameplay and not how butterflies and otehr crap look amazing or ugly

#

and it's much more cost efficient on top to avoid such early fake trend timings. one day and probably much sooner than later we will shift from 1440 to 4k anyway. Why should I bother wasting my money on insane video cards and insane screen prices despite technology is not even full ready? They first have to fix the displayport too and a few things more.

#

thanks to shortage and other crap from covid outbreak, they started to shit production towards 4k earlier because they wanna focus materials for better profit and some specific 1440p jumped up insanely in price, it makes no more sense to buy them unless you insist. others are again n/a. so i wouldn't be surprised if we sit on more 4k next year or 2025 already

#

lets see how apps will move along, especially these days it's real important they are designed performance efficient too

#

what do i care about 4k if i cannot even play properly with smooth stable fps?

wooden tendon
#

I agree to an extent - I've spent enough time in software development to believe that majority of software is written to be horrible

#

for example there was a game called american conquest that was a real time strategy game which allowed up to 16000 units and ran comfortably well on my single core pentium 4

#

right now people lose their minds when a game can do 1000 units, AC wasn't 3d though but still

wooden tendon
#

sorry to tag you out of the blue like this, but maybe you could help me figure out why my component re-renders when I navigate away to a page that does not have the component on it? like, I have console.log inside SomeComponent, and I navigate (via nextjs router.push()) to a different page, and I notice console.logs from SomeComponent printing just like I was visiting the previous page

ember finch
#

Idk, what if you navigate via Link instead of scripted router

#

If the re render is an issue you can try memoizing the component, read about useMemo

wooden tendon
#

same thing, I'm wondering if this is in fact intended behavior or a bug in my app

#

the only way it does not re-render is if I navigate without using routers - as in a "basic" html link that just opens the new page without prefetching anything

#

I don't know if this is something I should worry about or not, it doesn't actually cause any problems but it seems inefficient

#

ok I get it now, I saw my console.log because it was printing when the functional component was unmounting

This is very frustrating when I'm playing Arma 3 and selecting an app on Desktop for whatever reason

brisk inlet
#

No not really, they never fixed it properly and depends on how well that app is designed on top, so you may blame both MS as well as the specific app. I've experienced different situations and came to the conclusion that certain apps do better than others. There are games which seem to be a lot easier to handle with borderless full window mode.

I'm not sure if Nvidia and AMD did their part meanwhile but I've experienced performance issues especially with borderless windows in dual screen, certain apps suddenly lose priority and as a result drop down in fps critically despite not being in background

Unfortunately I cannot find any solution to this, Bluestacks emulates games well however it only allows to bind analog movement to mouse and keyboard, and googling only shows me articles on how to turn a phone into a console controller which is what I do not want. Any ideas?

warped spire

I don't really understand what you are describing, you want PC to run the game but phone to be a controller for it/display it?

unkempt spoke
#

yes, emulate the game on pc but use the phone for controlling (because I do not have a pc touchscreen)

warped spire
#

that is definitely a goal that is going to be buried by more popular search results that are similar lol

#

I see something called airdroid cast that can mirror screens/controls of android over to other OS's, and some people indicate it is good for gaming. It can do between 2 devices on the same network (WLAN or LAN)

#

so you want low latency android casting, or mirroring may be the correct search terms

not entirely sure if airdroid will work on the chromebook but maybe

I need the game to run on my PC tho because my phone sucks, its too slow and screen to small for my liking (and I am a poor pleb rn, already invested in the computer so I want to exploit that). Unless this will allow me to use the phone as my PC's "touchscreen" for emulated games.

https://binarly.io/posts/The_Far_Reaching_Consequences_of_LogoFAIL/index.html It is bad though, e.g. Schneier sums it up nicely: It’s an interesting vulnerability. Corporate buyers want the ability to display their own logos, and not the logos of the hardware makers. So the ability has to be in the BIOS, which means that the vulnerabilities aren’t being protected by any of the OS’s defenses. And the BIOS makers probably pulled some random graphics library off the Internet and never gave it a moment’s thought after that.

# unkempt spoke <@105548752558821376> I'm curious, does disk speed matter when streaming? I'm re...

For OBS itself probably not once its loaded its loaded, but for any assets you use in scenes it likely would, images, videos, transitions, audio files, etc.
Likewise if you are recording drive speed will matter then since you are writing to a drive when doing that.
With all of that a SATA SSD should be fast enough though, I cant say I'd benchmarked driver perf in OBS as I've never had a need to do so.

unkempt spoke

Well recording and upscaling to 2k is smooth with no lags at all but streams cough a bit. Next time I'll try putting both OBS and my scene assets onto an ssd

faint notch

it could even be the hardware encoder just being an earlier generation of nvenc and not capable of using the newer nvenc encoder libraries, OBS supports both old and new nvenc libs but as with all encoder stuff, newer versions are just better, more optimised etc.
I'd keep an eye on the log files, see if anything crops up in those.

Especially Meta is no serious showcase but nvm lol
Guess where Zuckerberg was spotted inside EU last time after they faced another ruling

#

When NSA demanded backdoor access to all data, especially Apple, Meta and Google pissed their pants and offered immediate cooperation. MS was the sole company in the USA openly threatening NSA with a lawsuit. At the end they bowed down their head too because government pressure was bigger than lobby power => national security & patriot act

#

It's that simple: 9/11 changed a lot of things in the USA and you are simply stupid if you refuse to cooperate after such an incident. That makes you a bullseye target

And Chinese lol I'm sorry but it's not much of a challenge to simply ignore USA/EU because not a single Chinese company operates inside those territories with a HQ. They are all located deep inside China and they would survive without us pretty much.

In fact: We are drooling for access to Chinese market despite all political efforts to get away from semiconductor business located in China/Taiwan, am I wrong? We don't exactly make it harder for them to "ignore" us.

#

I'm not sure if you follow what is happening inside EU at all but there is a nonstop crackdown ongoing. All top dogs including CEOs of Apple, Meta and Google were taking a flight to EU Brussel because they either faced CJEU ruling or more pressure from EU comissions in many issues including data protection

I'm looking forward for proof how Apple, Meta and Google are exactly on par with MS in this regard as they are losing lot of money in CJEU ruling alone. πŸ˜‰
Their market dominance was never part of my statement. Not even Intel comes close to MS in terms of power because Intel couldn't overturn any of their recent rulings because it's a fact they did lot of illegal things to cement their market power

Okay I set the workaround

  1. Wake up my PC hours before the alarm will happen
  2. When the time has come do both, but only happens if the PC is still up

  • Do alert with sound

Edge features do not work 100% with different search engines aside from Bing. And sorry but wtf is Cortana? I would rather install Alexa before I dare to think about this crap seriously

the problem is that I doubt EU can take any significant action. you aren't really being forced to use the OS. i mean, will you lose out on a lot of software and tools if you use linux instead? yes, but I don't think their control over the IT sector is criminal.
if anything was to happen, whether it would be an anti-competitive or a data privacy fine, it is going to be relatively miniscule. they will probably come up with hundred more ways of collecting telemetry or restricting control over the OS components.

#

opting for FOSS is nice because you know your data is probably not being stolen. but that also means that you have to take care of everything that it entails, sudden crashes and such. that's why I would never use a linux distro as my main OS, it's just way too much effort

And Linux development is a hell scape too.
Recently tried to build a Arma mod on linux..
Fails to build because compiler is out of date and doesn't support current standards.
Cannot install newer compiler because linux distribution doesn't support it (Its from 2017).

To fix it compile the whole compiler yourself. Okey. 4 hours later. Okey latest compiler, now I can finally..
Oh, even latest brand spanking new compiler version, doesn't support features from 3 years ago.. Well need to Adjust my code.

Next day, okey code adjusted and specifically removed comfortable usage of new features and added linux specific workarounds. Code now looks horrid, but I can build!
Oh the compiler crashes when building my project...
Maybe try other compiler, nope that crashes too but in different places and misses even more features.
One day later, edited code alot to workaround multiple compiler crashes. Finally project builds.

Now just run game with it.. Fails to start because glibc version is too old.

Fuck this, install new different linux distro in a VM.
Now I can compile and run the project on this VM, but it requires newer glibc than my main server has. So I cannot run the mod on the main server I use...

Meanwhile windows
Install latest visual studio. Development/Build machine must be windows 10 (But windows server back till 2016 would work), but can compile and the result will work even back down to windows XP.
Latest and greatest C++ features supported, very up to date. No compiler crashes encountered.

#

With windows development, I have to make sure my code is correct and works.

a part of it has to be due to less customizability and such

then again, if we're talking critical vulnerabilities on a firmware level.. then didn't most of the ones on windows come from shit like Intel ME/SGX

wooden tendon
#

Yea let's not talk about their pricing, since they bill 700 dollars for a set of 4 wheels for the mac pro

shy perch
#

ewaste is a big aspect that ive previously seem them to just completely ignore.. maybe even work against it by introducing hardware DRM

wooden tendon

What's their manufacture cost and sale price of a macbook pro? I feel like the margin is grossly high

Apple stands no chance if the big 3 assemblers turn around. Apple pretty much lost their entire desktop business already and their macbook business is sinking ship too. All they do now is ripoff their existing loyal lemmings by providing more expensive luxury.

At the end Apple remains superior in two things: software and life style

Anyone know of windows Sandboxing solutions that don't require setting up a VM.
I want all applications inside the sandbox to run inside it (cannot see other running applications or OS files).
Have separated files (Not in User/X/AppData, but in its own special place. For example like linux Wine stores files).
Most importantly files should persist. I want a separated container, but not one that deletes itself everytime I close it.

There is Windows Sandbox, but files don't persist. (Ex. https://github.com/microsoft/Windows-Sandbox-Utilities/issues/32 "Hey you can just map a folder and reinstall the app every launch" ugh).
There is Sandboxie, but its paid and I don't know if it actually allows for files to persist.

Surely there must be some solution for this without a VM

Reading further into it. I think a Windows Sandbox with a script that always maps some folders would work, for apps that can be ran without installation.

2fa with confirmation prompts are already in service, it's just a question of who is providing it

Not much reason for EU doing anything.
Interoperability has already been there before, and continues to still be there

And compatibility in consumer terms means you don't need extra tools to make it run. This is why EU aims at Apple and many others. Even MS is better at this lol

What I do not understand is if people desire to connect Android, an OS designed for smaller mobile devices, to large screens and other fancy ideas which was never the idea of it. I would understand if Google desires to enter the desktop market but so far they failed at it with ChromeOS or whatever name they nonstop change

#

Third parties are automatically at loss if they are on bad terms with Apple, Google and/or MS and that's the basic proof why EU decided to take actions. This is everything but free market. only thing holding me back is the difficulty of sideloading stuff.
as for android, what advantage does it have over ios really? i mean its open source, but all of the vendor libraries and such are 0's&1's. in the case of samsung, if you even try to flash your phone with an android rom an efuse will just nuke itself and you lose many features permanently

#

its open source, but in practice, the system will be locked up. might as well go for an iphone where they care about the UX

brisk inlet
#

Despite what Dedman said, EU pulled lot of things (not all of their ideas worked out well but most part it was a big win for consumers all along)

Why would Apple and Facebook send their CEOs directly to Brussel to meet a "mere" head of investigation if EU's doings were no threat? US gov is humiliated because they even failed at better data protection laws

shy perch
#

yeah even if they can be meme'd about sometimes, EU has done a lot to halt exploitation of consumers

#

the biggest issue still imo is that many companies in e.g. germany&italy are reselling goods from aliexpress. fake CE&TUV certs, etc. there has to be more control imo. biggest offender is amazon, the only marketplace where you can buy so many things to unintentionally burn your house down with

#

a heater i bought from amazon a while ago was recalled by the local authority here, but amazon didnt notify me at all lmao

brisk inlet
#

I wish they had more inspections but especially Germany and Italy have lack of menpower in customs office. They managed to get rid of many fake goods but China is just flooding more than they can handle (pretty much the same tactics like Israels friends doing with Irondome lol, yeah tasteless comparison but its simply true...)

#

Amazon marketplace is in fact out of control and still competitionless in many countries because competition simply sucks at everything. They don't wanna invest in anything, they don't wanna hire well paid workforce, just do nothing and hope to follow Amazons footprint

#

Greece is the new terminal for China anyway. They officially purchased the bankrupt sea and airports there, haven't they celebrated a recent IPO there too? and not to mention Greece is a perfect backdoor into entire EU, much better than Italy and Germany where everything is more strict and more expensive

e.g. Hongkong didn't even have VAT at all, so I don't feel sorry for the countries

#

They create more taxes and more excuses but we get little back

#

But I'm fully aware of the VAT cheats

#

Btw speaking of Amazon:
Amazon Germany was at >33b turnover 2022, last year its estimated at >46b which is insane again
The former no. 1 powerhouse Otto barely managed to finally reach 10b last year lol

#

Germany's economy is fucked already. 70% are price-oriented, they don't care much about quality, buy everything with PayPal purchase protection which doesn't really fix the issues with fake goods, bad dealers and cheaters

#

i read this one dudes post on the small business subreddit. he was complaining about his VAT liability because it made him keep very little of what he made.
read more replies from him in the thread and i just had a complete change of mind lmfao

#

hes basically buying cheap asf tech from china and reselling it locally. then he uses pakistanis/indians for the tech support

#

the markup on the stuff he sells was like 15x or something

wooden tendon
#

Vat is a good way to tax unemployed people, sucks for business owners

#

At least there's no vat for purchases coming to me from other EU countries

brisk inlet
#

I'm bypassing VAT legally with paper company (by paying all taxes, they can blow me). It's not always possible obviously but I think 80% of the purchases end up vat-free because I'm an employee of my own company and it's self-consumption which is 100% legit.

#

We learn such things and many other stuff from rich people telling you how to stay rich.

#

I'm pretty sure together with AI there will be better solutions to fix that too but lot of people will first lose their jobs as usual.

#

Wouldn't be surprised if I'm one of them, AI is an industrial revolution on a complete different lvl

wooden tendon
#

Only way I don't pay vat here is if the purchase is a business expense, so at least most of my gear and fuel

brisk inlet
#

Some part of private expenses can be changed to business ones too, e.g. car. less than 20% at my home is privately owned. car, pc, mobile devices, even services such as insurance, rent, all paid company directly.

#

and thanks to accounting software, its dam easy too

#

Im importing everything that is non swissmade anyway, so good luck to tax office. customs office tried hard too and they gave up decades ago too blobcloseenjoy

#

the only thing i really hate is the online interface of customs office, a nightmare to work with

I might be blind, but is there a way to change discords timestamp format?
Its currently in MM/DD/YYYY hh:mm am/pm which i dont find really fancy...

Uh wait, do you see a MDY format there? This is what I see

Or more older post you mean?

That but for older posts, like older than 2 days.

According to Google... that's a wishlist

For Discord I use English (UK) and fixes the date/time issue πŸ˜‰

So for me it's dd/mm/yyyy hh:ii

Oh my, changing to the English (UK) fixed the timestamps indeed. Thanks @raw elbow! mindblown

EU will soon face their first devastating defeat if they cannot get ahead of AI topics. Software companies will be uncontrollable as soon as AI gets involved in daily business. No matter how many victories they celeberate today, tomorrow is yet another matter.

Long shot question, if anyone in here has some graphics engine experience, more specifically in Unreal but possibly in general HLSL...

Anyone know anyone familiar with Unreal's raytracing shaders? Specifically implementing custom intersection shaders? I can get all my other shaders to run, any hit, closest hit, and miss, but intersection shaders don't seem to be executed at all (hits just get the default triangle intersection attributes without any of my changes to them)

Thanks, I'll ask in there! πŸ™‚

Ubisoft took down The Crew and now people hope it can start a movement against games as a service that give no offline or private hosting options at the end of offical support.

wooden tendon

I don't see a solution on that page, how would they implement private servers for a game like the crew?

its not that its easy to do, but at least you'd know it won't suddenly stop working

We have Win 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 - end date 13.01.2032

If Win12 doesn't arrive in 2025, I will probably switch to Win 10 Enterprise because my machines won't touch Win11, only over my dead body.

In the Windows 11 24H2 26100 build, all IoT editions (IotEnterprise, IotEnterpriseS, IotEnterpriseSK) don't require TPM.
Requirements for regular IoTEnterprise are 4GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores, while requirements for IoTEnterpriseS/SK are 2GB of RAM and 2 CPU cores.

have u guys seen the bing AI deepsearch thing yet? Looks like it automatically rephrases your search keywords/phrase a bunch of times and then collates the results together somehow

#

I already thought AI does a good job of looking through search results and giving you best results, which solves an issue lately with search engines where your results get buried by the most popular thing being the top 100 results

#

like news story happens about X topic, and all you see is 100 results talking about the newest thing about that topic, and nothing about it before that

#

I've found using AI search will pull out a lot of that buried stuff

warped spire
#

ive not seen that, i don't really pay attention to the junk software samsung throws on the phones

#

ive seen videos on phone translaters though, and the concept seems cool

#

i guess if you get AI to parse the audio for better recognition prob be best addition of AI to them

#

like using nvidias sound cleaning for it

brisk inlet
#

recognition was indeed one of the big obstacles over the last years, even Apple failed at that, well they failed at AI completely which surprised me very much. After launching Siri they pretty much fell back to sleep and forgot about AI dev

warped spire
#

the ML recognition, and voice generation are pretty huge leaps forward I think, I think next step is ML interpretation for actually kicking off UI/app actions

#

itll be pretty neat in a few years

brisk inlet
#

that would be amazing

warped spire
#

microsoft already integrating copilot into everything, and I'm pretty sure that is them getting prepped for that step

#

where you can just give general voice order to PC and it does it

brisk inlet
#

Startrek speaking with computer was considered scifi humor. Later Siri was introduced as one of the first functional showcase. Lets see if MS manages to get Startrek v2 πŸ˜‚

warped spire
#

Ive avoided the voice command shit so far because I don't want to have to hold its hand every single step, correcting every misinterpreted word, etc. so they just ned to clean that up

#

already industry says AI/ML acceleration in every CPU chip from now on

brisk inlet
#

welcome in club, I'm strictly against Amazon Alexa, Siri and whatever. People may blame me for being oldschool but I like good old input designs where my fingers have the power to change everything 🀣

warped spire
#

I feel we still on track for my guess that we get AR/VR UI for windows in like 2026-2030

#

voice command + eye tracking + gesture, us AI/ML to interpret all of those

#

and get intuitive navigation and actions

#

tell it to write an email, only have to give it like 3 sentances to write a few paragraphs

#

copilot for 365 pulls all your office documents and stuff together, so could feasibly pull relevant information from other documents indexed

brisk inlet
#

I'm afraid China is already probing into that shit for a different purpose lol

warped spire
#

I'm hoping ML vulnerability scanning takes a huge leap forward for developers for caching issues before release

#

ML code scanning to find and catch issues and improve general standard of software releases

#

I feel like it is pretty well suited for it

#

and the stuff in visual studio is already super helpful

pretty sure they have an initiative to push AI features into their stuff, and they already using it

not too different from US/etc

#

companies selling this stuff to police

#

biggest problem is its still pretty inaccurate, and they treat it as if it was very accurate

0 doublechecking it

its amazing for directing your attention to relevant stuff and minimizing irrelevant stuff

super useful, but not something to let run without oversight
