One of our main voice actors and audio engineer, Jef Leeson, has just published Western Space Odyssey - a 2h long animated western-sci-fi mix parody movie he helped to create with friends and partners over the last few years 🤯

More info at: http://www.westernspaceodyssey.com

Or give the movie a go directly and share with friends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgOja3C3eoM

When newly-promoted Captain Sheriff Plantagenet Clamdip - of the Planet Massachusetts - arrives at the most distant outpost of the Western Federation to take command of the BFS (Big Frikkin' Ship) 'Toasted Western', he barely avoids getting fragged by his own cowboy crew in the first thirty seconds. But, as fragging a new Captain Sheriff in the...

Oddly while I like The Expanse, I never really bought into the BSG reboot

hearty basalt

Yeah, but to me it's like Bladerunner. Deckard is a cool character, but more of the world is what I wanted and got with 2049.

rustic drift
#

I'm fine with a new lead character each season as long as the storylines are good

haughty tundra
#

Amazon bought The Expanse , saved it from Cancelation

#

i really wish Amazon also buy The Colony for theirs line of sci-fi titles because what USA Network did was outrageous

patent plover
#

I wasn't so sure I liked how Altered Carbon ended. Felt a little Deus Ex Machina and not really clever enough

rustic drift
#

It felt a bit like Quantum Leap for me, but thats OK

#

Anyway, Netflix and chill time for me. Someone else can hold the "ban button".

haughty tundra
#

well i the Altered Carbon has open-ending with the possible search for {spoilers} so new seasons or restart sequel is possible

#

also the staff, cast, writers etc. weren't told about the cancelation until after shooting for the last two episodes of 3rd season

#

hence the ending is actually plot opening as preset for the season 4

fresh fable
#

I can't get enough of 'The Bridge' (Bron/Broen) from Sweden/Denmark. The characters in it are 3 dimensional, there are no stereotype goodies or baddies, with the main character, an autistic police woman. Fascinating and brilliant. Can't wait to see what Saga Norén, the main female role, does next.

#

In my opinion it's up there with the greatest of all time, Hill St Blues.

#

If you find it hard to believe a swedish language show, which can only be viewed with subtitles (if you're lucky), can be that good, read the rave reviews on google from across tha planet.

I watched The Expanse season 1 in a day and then hoovered up the first few novels until they started to drift off into a slightly too preachy/PC direction for me. But I was impressed by the show.

patent plover
#

@fer right? BSG was just incoherent

#

The Expanse was a surprise for me, I'd not heard of it prior to seeing it listed on Netflix. At first I was just going to ignore it, there are dozens of badly made, crappy, low budget and weakly plotted sci-fi series out there, but I'm glad I did give it a chance. It is really pretty good.

rustic drift

Having finished the series, I'm looking for something similar. (with the exception of season 3)

#

GBee I was in the same boat with The Expanse... Except in my case I wanted to watch some German stuff for practice, so the idea was to choose something crappy that I don't care about and which I could miss details..... I don't think I would have learnt so much, and tried paying so much attention to a German speaking show with anything crappy.

But now I'm watching it in English a second time through, in preparation for S3 :P

copper frigate
#

@patent plover the BSG reboot too often felt to me like a show without a clear idea of its own endgame, and the season set in Iraq on that planet was painfully bad. The Expanse benefits from having a series of novels to work off, but the source material - at least for me - went off the boil about 3 books in.

#

Killjoys seasons 1 and 2 were great but the third was a disappointment.

foggy trail
#

true...
oh, i forgot "westworld", and "Godless"

#

both fantastic

polar marsh
#

yeah, BSG's 3rd season on the Iraq planet sucked

#

I still haven't watched it until the end

patent plover
#

Yeah the comparison of BSG to Lost is a good one, they really wanted to give the impression of a clever and complex arching storyline, but in reality what we got was so clearly being made up as they went along

#

Some of the stuff they introduced just to tie up the loose ends were just bizarre. Truthfully I remember little of the series, except the disappointment of it.

#

Now Westworld I was wary about, another big budget hyped series with some big names attached. Even halfway through I was thinking it was going to be another BSG but it did actually come together by the end and while I'm not raving about it, I am looking forward to seeing what comes next.

rustic drift
#

Seen Killjoys, Defiance, Ascention. Started watching Van Helsing but lost interest.

patent plover

Ascension was the one they cancelled after a single series?

delicate marsh
#

Extinction?

rustic drift
#

thats it I think

delicate marsh
#

I think the premise of it is very interesting, execution was okay. The CG was lacking in some areas and you could definitely tell when the actors were just staring at a wall.

rustic drift
#

yeah, that one

#

I didn't see it coming

#

Anyway, NMS time

delicate marsh
#

Lol, alrighty.

polar marsh
#

I'd say watch Babylon 5 if you haven't already, but it's hard to tell people to grit their teeth through the first season

patent plover
#

Babylon 5 is hard to watch today because it seems a bit cheesy, but as an example of how to do a huge, coherent arching storyline, I can't think of many better examples

#

Probably best if you saw it at the time it was created, but maybe I'm underestimating people's ability to look past it's dated facade and acting. At the time the effects were cutting edge and TV in general was ultra low budget

polar marsh
#

also you didn't have many serialised shows back then. Most things were episodic so they could be shown out of sequence by the networks

delicate marsh
#

I've watched very little of babylon 5, this was a few years ago though. It is worth watching in it's entirety?

polar marsh
#

it gets very good in the second and third seasons

delicate marsh
#

Hmm. Interesting. I really have no problem watching older tv series, not really a snob when it comes to that. It's a shame though, there are people who do have a problem watching older films.

patent plover
#

Episode by episode it might be easy to dismiss, but it does have a story to tell if you stick with it and what really blew my teenage mind at the time it's that by the end it ties everything together very well. Even little stuff that you might have missed along the way reveals itself to have been part of a carefully plotted master plan by the writers. Unlike Lost and other recent examples it doesn't feel forced

#

Then again, this was over 20 years ago, I might feel very different if I rewatched it again today

copper frigate
#

B5 still stands up today if you just focus on the storyline. It was way in advance of its time as proper long form storytelling on TV. Unlike almost every Trek show after TOS.

@foggy trail which is quite unfortunate, as I do like submarine movies & novels, there is a new holywood sub movie in the works (hunter killer) unfortunately alone the trailer is so terrible (like submariners screaming "hoorah" instead of saying sth like "Aye, Sir" to confirm the order to submerge the boat)

haughty tundra

while i like PS and i do really want to see if they can pull some 'oldie goodie' wibe out of it

#

i'm still in hope they start to use the ST brand more effectively, Federation had tons of big wars and especially smaller conflict and cold-war are like omnipresent

#

why not invest into mini-series (like marvel does) and do several Log Books of various captains serving in the wars or border regions (tension, unknown, low law presence)

#

quite sure with bit of care some of those can turn into more than several episodes if good enough

rustic drift
#

Saw Ready Player One last night. Not bad, not bad at all!

Gets said a lot but I preferred the book. The movie sort of irritated me since every one of the challenges was completely different. It was OK but only loosely follows the book and does a lot less to inspire the future of VR.

rustic drift
#

I think VR will take off when we have proper hand/haptic support. Also, AR features (much like the transparent visors in RPO).

frail meteor
#

i think VR will stay niche, and stuck in gaming market and specialized businesses, AR will take off like a rocket

#

im hoping first srs AR headset within next year and a half

#

doesnt really seem like anyone is gearing up for this christmas though :(

#

im ready to drop 1-2k on a legit AR headset

#

AR legit gonna be damned disruptive to market

#

TV's and Projectors

#

not too useful if enough people rocking AR sets

patent plover
#

I'll keep saying it, but until the resolution improves dramatically VR isn't worth the asking price

copper frigate
#

I think AR may only go mainstream when there is a cheap tie-up with smartphones.

frail meteor
#

i think it will sync/replace honestly, and i think that should be pretty obvious way for it to go

#

immediately

#

the only thing being if they are stupid it will be proprietary link to specific phones

#

i think playable VR next year christmastime

#

currently its gay, the pimax '8k' looks somewhat usable in detail and FOV

#

i should hope we get a step up firmly into a new generation end of 2019

timid stump

I can see why we use VR in games (like DCS World) because we are playing in 1st Person, but that would change a movie completely as it would be first person, or do we watch as a camera?

@foggy trail I have, it was pretty good. It's weird seeing him outside of the office in a serious role. I think he takes these roles to remove that stigma attached to him that was granted by the office. I thought it was going to be super cheasy, but it ended up being a decent watch.

We never really got much insight into the leader's backstory before he got demoted. They only used it as a means to hurt one another and not as a means to progress the plot.

POI is like the best show ever. Feels weird that noone mentioned it yet.
That link is a ~20 minute read about the show and contains only mild spoilers.
It started with the idea of global full-time surveillance 2 years before Snowden happened.

Quote

Person of Interest bordered on being a happy accident - David Slack said it “was the only science fiction show ever to come true while it was still being written.”

patent plover

eh, I watched a couple of series or more, but POI never really gripped me because of the implausible AI element. That and also the fact that I lost enthusiasm for the episodic detective type dramas a very long time ago and when you strip back the dressing, this is ultimately what POI is. It was one of those shows I would watch when I wanted to turn off my brain for 45 minutes.

Has anyone been watching The Last Kingdom? Its based on a 10 book so far series by Bernard Cornwell. Ive read them all and its nice watching the familiar characters on TV. Season 3 just came out and shock horror some things have changed from the books... anyway it has quality acting and production values and great historical research and some cool dark ages viking vs saxon team deathmatch. Some people might find the main character a bit annoying, he’s a cocky and lucky young warrior and the major issues facing King Alfred always miraculously hinge around his decisions and actions, so it feels contrived in places, but it’s a fun bit of escapism

#

The main theme of the book series is the creation of England, from Alfreds retreat into the marshes around glastonbury to him defeating the danes to retake wessex then mercia then east anglia sussex and northumbria, to create England

patent plover

Yes, I've been watching. First two series were originally FTA, noticed the third had appeared on Netflix just this week.

The saxons are christian and the danes are norse so there’s a lot of religious politics going on too

There's really only one path where you can really progress, and if you go off path, you're swiftly killed

#

So you just keep going through it

#

And then they give this whole scene about how "You don't actually have freewill" because you're forced into a certain path, and there is only the perception of freewill by giving fake choices

#

Was kinda a shitty way to do it tbh, but it was the cheap way so I guess that's why they did it

deft delta
#

Yeah I felt like it took a concept that could be pretty nifty and then didn’t have the time/ funds/ drive to do it justice.

Because I figure the only reason you’d do a choose your own adventure movie instead of a book is that a movie can have loads more options without turning into a multiple volume mess, but they had very few impactful realistic choices

So it kind of ruined it imo

A series about sending a female to the moon, and they complain they don't have female astronauts? What is the timeframe of this series... the 60's?

#

@foggy trailthat 5 season commitment is huge for Amazon considering the series could always flop

#

But a license for LotR/Tolkien stuff isn't exactly cheap either 😄

foggy trail
#

no, not cheap at all 😄

#

Amazon bought the television rights for The Lord of the Rings for US$250 million in November 2017, making a five season production commitment worth at least US$1 billion.

true pawn
#

Was the rights specifically for Lord of the Rings?

#

What I understood the series is based on some appendix, since it's 2nd age

#

But I can't remember if it's LotR appendices + a part of Silmarillion (the Akallabeth)

#

Could be they start from Numenor but progress through the ages in later seasons?

foggy trail
#

it will be in the second age and contain a ton of stuff from the silmarillion afaik

#

i think a lot of about the rise and fall of numenor

true pawn
#

It could be the knee's bees if well done

foggy trail
#

it's gonna be epic. the question is: how epic

#

😄

true pawn
#

Numenor was basically Rome on steroids so you can get to see a lot of Middle-Earth covering just that

#

It's a lovely concept. In LotR and eg. in the LotRO MMO set in the same time frame, end of 3rd age, you go to the right parts of Middle-Earth, it will be full of ruins left behind by the Numenor empire(s)

#

I'm working on a scifi setting that is a bit similar in that regard

foggy trail
#

if i'm not mistaken, they recasted hugo weaving, so elrond might be a part of the story

true pawn
#

You'd expect him to be in touch with the kings of Numenor

#

since I think his brother was their first 😉

foggy trail
#

i think so

#

it's been a while since i've read the silmarillion

#

but if that's the case, they'd have to pack a 💩 ton of story in "just" 5 seasons

#

if they wanna cover the rise and the fall of numenor

true pawn
#

Kind of makes sense for the numenorean bloodline to be strong and long lived if their ancestor was a half-elf. Though just one ancestor is not that much but hey, fantasy

#

I guess the human part was also an "original". Hurin's folk or something

foggy trail
#

hehe, guess i have to read some tolkien books again to refresh my memories 😄

i came across some effing good videos. almost like a documentary, but way better. it's a must watch!

backstory:
a dude bought a ghost town in the Californian mountains close to the death valley. it's called Cerro Gordo and used to be the biggest mining operation in the US. it once had 4500 residents and at the same time LA was at 6000.
the dude is living there now for over a year and is trying to preserve the history of that town by rebuilding the old houses and exploring the old mines.
one night one year ago the "american hotel", which once seemed to be a hideout for butch casidy, burned down and this event almost drove this dude to the edge. for the past 8 months he was trying to get concrete to Cerro Gordo to rebuild this hotel, but got ghosted by all companies he contacted because of this extremely remote and difficult to reach location.
fast-forward:
one day some other rich dude with a kink for heavy machinery got word of what was going on in cerro gordo and decided to go on an adventure and logistical nightmare: bring heavy machines and a cement mixer to cerro gordo and help him to rebuild the hotel... for free (the machinery dude even bought a cement mixer, just for that action).

here is the story:
