Is it by design that the transposed T is rendered that high up, in the following case?

$(A^(-1))^T$

yes, bounding box is just bigger in the second case

though thats just a normal T, not specifically transposed. notation differs of course but i think its more typical to either use an upright T or top

The parentheses adjust size automatically, this forces them to not do so

I took the Smarter parentheses sizing issue to mean adding an option for that behaviour, as an alternative to the current default of scaling to match the height. Cool. Thank you for both the top, to create the correct transpose operation, and also for the $...$ to align the symbol lower. This is perfect.
