Is it by design that the transposed T is rendered that high up, in the following case?

yes, bounding box is just bigger in the second case

though thats just a normal T, not specifically transposed. notation differs of course but i think its more typical to either use an upright T or top

The parentheses adjust size automatically, this forces them to not do so

I took the Smarter parentheses sizing issue to mean adding an option for that behaviour, as an alternative to the current default of scaling to match the height.
