being able to connect with other people is its own reward
the need to know someone IRL is arbitrary
some people connect better that way, but it's not like it's a requirement to connect with someone
Talking with online friends can be good for several reasons:
-
Social connection: Online friends can provide a sense of social connection and support, especially for those who may not have many opportunities to socialize in person.
-
Diversity: Online friends can come from different backgrounds, cultures, and geographic locations, providing opportunities to learn about different perspectives and experiences.
-
Convenience: Online communication is often more convenient than in-person communication, as it can be done from anywhere and at any time.
-
Shared interests: Online friends can share common interests and hobbies, providing opportunities for meaningful conversations and shared experiences.
However, it is important to remember that online friendships should be approached with caution and care, as there are risks associated with online communication. It is important to be aware of potential risks such as online harassment, scams, and identity theft, and to take steps to protect oneself while engaging in online communication.

@viscid glen here
I mean, for instance, zero people in my family and only a couple of my close friends are LLM enthusiasts, my parents can't even get the acronym GPT right. I'm the one who told several of my coworkers about it, they either had no clue or had just heard the name in passing. I'm not about to talk about promptwriting or the future of LLMs to them, so I'd have to like start a local club or something. And then I have access to just people within the vicinity, certianly not from all around the world
I much prefer to know people in person but that isn't always practical
