If I am lucky enough to win the prize, the money would allow me to take a day off from my day job to write, which would allow me to finish the novel quicker and get started on the next one.

I’d put money aside to hire sensitivity readers as the novel is based on a culture I am not overly familiar with and I’d like it to be as authentic and inclusive as possible.

I’d also be able to save some money towards a research trip to China. I’d especially love to travel to Xian the old Capital of China, wander the streets to soak in the culture, visit libraries and talk to experts to find out more about the Tang dynasty, the time period the story is based in.

Working with a professional editor would be just as valuable. As this is my first novel, I know I have much to learn, especially putting the story together as a whole and pulling out the themes and balancing the various plot points. I’m eager to build the skills to look at my own work more critically to help with future novels.
