You can make it much more critical, but then it's often blindly critical. It can't actually think, of course, and has a bias towards wanting to help you that it often interprets as "mislead the requestor to make them feel good"

Lol, I mean I have experience, and my experience is pretty similar to yours in this respect. There is no way to magically make it good at critical thinking if it's incapable of real critical thought, kind of like with people

What I do is just slightly move the needle, using more subtle statements about wanting objective answers, not wanting to be mollycoddled, etc. But it still tends to just be negative or hypercritical rather than accurate the second you put one too many statements

And if you ask to selectively assess against objective criteria, it will overapply. If you have a rubric, it will indeed apply it to almost everything

Remember that it has no real cognition. You can do a lot with AI, but this is a fairly superficial approach to real intelligence. The best way to get what you want is to wait like five years

I don't think it's a bad idea to read what other people have or ask around and incorporate a few lines if you aren't confident in your writing, just keep your expectations realistic. There isn't a magic incantation to just fix everything, and if there were it would spread like wildfire because most people want an AI that's always honest and doesn't bullshit them.

Remember, all the AI companies consider it an error whenever an AI gives inaccurate information, so if they haven't fixed the problem, the likelihood of any single person outright magicking up a solution is near zero

That isn't to say you can't guide better answers, that's just all you can probably do. Don't use a rigid rubric as a baseline. Just give it some general things to consider, say you want just the facts, no bullshit, etc. Look out for unintended consequences like the ones you describe
