I recently started using AI more heavily because I got an internship and started a few personal projects that have forced me to rethink my organizational and note-taking system.

I'm using Notion to stay organized, NotebookLM for my research, Gemini and ChatGPT for ideation, but my process still feels as chaotic as before. It has troubling implications. If OpenAI seeks govt contracts or wants more govt grants, I worry there will be pressure to impose right-wing bias on Chat in order to comply with the executive order.

So when that takeover truly solidifies, what will ultimately stop 1 website from being "better" than another if it's more or less the same AI dynamo generating them both? My only comparison is Unity game engine. Once that became the norm, game publishers became so over-saturated that the whole industry became too bland to even stay updated on unless you are very keen on scouting out the true gems worth playing.

But yes, my question is this, I am using OpenAIs GPT-4.1 model for a project of my mine, now before it's release I was using GPT-4o. Everything seems to be better under the newer model, better instruction following, rule compilancy etc. However I recently read that the Context Windows of GPT-4.1 is only 32k tokens under the UI and not API. But under GPT-4o it was 128k tokens on the UI. Problem is that my projects initiate files and instructions are already at 31k tokens. I've asked ChatGPT's Help to clarify this but it wasn't able to as it couldn't find any references to the Context Window size for anything other that 4o and 4.1 mini, so does anyone actually know what the true up-to-date Context Windows size is for GPT-4.1 for a Plus user on the website?

What is a Context Window?: A context window is the amount of previous text or conversation that an AI model can consider or remember when generating a response. A larger context window allows the AI to understand and respond to more complex and longer conversations or texts.

This is why I am obsessed with size of the context window and how much of it I have for each model. If I have a small context window on 4.1 and a large one of 4o, then it might make more sense to switch my model usage from 4.1 (32k) to 4o (128k). Assuming what I've read is correct. But it's all contradictory.

Google's Gemini 1.5 Pro has a 2 million context window. Which is frankly bananas.

I'm still assuming that it's all 32K on ChatGPT. There would be no logical reason for them to use a different window, less than the total the backend model supports, for each one.

Unless, perhaps, it's because 4o is multi-modal, so may need a larger window for stuff beyond text and examining images.

And beyond a certain token count, you need to start being very careful how you construct your context, so it will understand what it needs to.

They see the most detail at the start and end of the prompt. Stuff in the middle can tend to get ignored.

I am reading a lot of forum posts that support that assumption too. But as they are saying it is a assumption based on previous out of date statements from OpenAI. There is a lot of complaint about the limits and their lack of clarification. And a similar complaint about why there is a 32k limit on both the 4o, 4.1, 4.1 mini models when mini is meant to be very cheap to run. What's the incentive to use it from a users pov?

On ChatGPT? Because -mini is unlimited. 4.1 an 4o all have usage limits, even on the Plus account.

From a design standpoint, it's far easier for them to create a hard window limit in ChatGPT, since you can change models mid-session.

Asking it to look for something specific in the middle will usually make it look in the middle.
A better test would be asking it to summarize, or something like that.

The issue is when you want it to "see" the whole thing.

The prompt you give it at the end has a lot of effect in how it reads the rest of the context.

It's like "Here is some information you might need to answer the question at the end".

And then it looks just until it thinks it found the answer, and then stops.
