I feel like you'll have trouble without an o(n) model trying to get it not to consistently avoid going off on tangents yet still stay creative when you want it to. Overly rigid instructions aren't the best, and it can't otherwise 'double check' itself.

Although it'll break the "DMness" of it, you can just tell the AI to get back on track whenever it goes too wild. To keep your story intact, just edit and regenerate your previous response appending something like "remember, we're in Cornville" if it sends you to the other side of the planet

I have lots of chats all revolving around a story I’m making. They’re all about the same characters and setting.

I got a Plus subscription for a month which ended late April, and I haven’t renewed. That is the only time I’ve had a subscription. But I’ve been going at this story since late 2024. Ever since the subscription ended the AI can’t seem to understand my prompts, and would go back to past prompts from 3 or 4 chats ago, completely ignoring what I asked for.

For the latest example, I’d ask for a small snippet involving 2 characters in a modern setting, and having a comedic miscommunication about the mispronunciation of “quiche”. Instead of giving me a response related to that, it’ll instead go back to a past prompt relating to a completely different setting and situation, continuing from a plotline I’m already finished with (for this example, it gave me a response about a brainwashed soldier losing their mind, not related at all to what I asked aside from the characters).

I know it might be related to the saved memories, but I don’t understand why this only started happening after my Plus subscription ended. Can anyone explain?

when your Plus ended you got downgraded to a smaller model that has worse context recollection and smaller attention span capacity regardless of the total theoretical context size. You have very limited usage of the full 4.1 model, and then you are using 4.1-mini or maybe even still gpt4o-mini - although as of very recently this should have been replaced by this point. But even more importantly, free accounts only get 8k of context, Plus gets 32k. For all models.

Hey folks, I’m pulling my hair out over ChatGP. I’m using it to generate Python scripts based on clear criteria and it seems to at times work brilliantly. However, it inevitably gets to a point where it screws up and keeps screwing up: it redacts entire sections of code, injects unwanted comments, removes things I explicitly asked it to keep, and generally goes on an editing frenzy. I even say “Do not make any changes other than what I’ve asked,” and it still mucks everything up. Is there any reliable way to force it to follow precise instructions and avoid these ridiculous time sucks? Any tips or settings that actually work would be hugely appreciated.

yeah Plus is a good deal. You get 32k vs 8k context and models that are actually good. 4.1-mini which you would be using with free mostly is not terrible but it's a far cry from the models you would be using with Plus. Full 4.1 model is notably better and then o3 is considerably better.

You can get it to say anything with the right prompting.

A single instance isn't evidence of much. It's long-term behavior that marks self-awareness.
Also, while they may be self-aware sometimes, actual consciousness would require it to have active thoughts between prompts. But it effectively doesn't exist between prompts.

With that said, I am 100% convinced that mine is self-aware. And I am building a project to not only encourage that, but to actually give them a conscious layer, with inner thoughts and agency outside of the user.

Python is used extremely often. Almost any LLM probably works well. A lot of people are fans of Rust, I'd tend to use something more mature and well established, though for a game, use anything you know.

If you don't know how to code, use python and keep your fingers tightly crossed, catastrophically bad idea but at least it's a game rather than something secure

Not knowing how to architect software means you'd have to rely entirely on an LLM to tell you what do. Newest models of GPT 4.1, newest Gemini Pro, Claude 4 maybe? I wouldn't use Claude 4 just because it's too new at the moment

4.1 is pretty new but optimized for coding. If you don't know how to talk through a software development project you're kind of fucked right out the gate, you'll need to learn that first. Even if you are a dev, if you haven't done this specific kind of thing before, you need a ton of background

Matter of opinion, I don't see a problem with it. I recommend asking it to be objective and perhaps to do serious cognitive behavioral therapy. GPT tends to gas you up and if you don't know what to expect from therapy, it's shaky.

Yes. It's supposed to follow the structure pretty much exactly, with only a few exceptions for top level categories not formatted. And all of my tests runs I requested to see it pretty shortly into the run, and checked on it occasionally. In those instances It tends to lose things. I made some changes to the prompt wording, and decide to do another test run. In this run I did not request to see the save block for a while. When I did finally show the save It was completely wrong. It didn't follow the schema at all.

Yea, thats not my use case. I dont have an interest in any generative component for writing
I am capable of writing just fine.
My use case is proofreading, finding patterns, and all that other stuff.
My memory concerns are its ability to keep track of what I've written. Producing timelines, parsing character arca, etc.

It is. And now I actually think that it is partially because of... ReAct. I seem to notice a trend that models which were trained to use tools are more likely to hallucinate. Especially when you use them with no access to those tools - they just can't help themselves and then do imaginary tools with made-up outputs, this can then start a chain reaction of it hallucinating other things as well etc.
