guy posted a pic of his mailbox filled in with concrete with only a small hole for the mail to be inserted

#

the logic being that, if some teenager tries to smash his mailbox, it will harm the person smashing, probably pretty badly

#

xitter has been on fire with users defending/arguing against the practice of filling in ur mailbox with concrete

#

the baiting is so easy and the posts are so funny

#

ppl talking about how this is the beginning of the marxists plan to take over the west and shit

#

defend your mailbox or western civilization will fall!

#

ive been demanding to see pics of the insides of peoples' mailboxes. are u really about that life or are u all talk?

#

also, ive flipped the typical racebaiting 13/50 shit lol

#

instead of making it a race thing

#

"we all know its boys doing this. I'm just being realistic here. if we implemented strict curfews for teenage boys, nobody would have to fortify their mailbox"

"Back in the 80's I was doing some rehab on a hamstring injury (I played a lot of amateur baseball) one of the other guys had several surgical scars on his right chest and shoulder. It turns out he was using a baseball bat on mail boxes and found one like yours, and his shoulder lost." lol

#

love that shit

#

"I read a similar story on here. Guy makes indestructible mailbox after getting his destroyed. A few days later he finds a broken bat. Later that week he hears the local high school quarterback is out for the season with a broken arm after some misadventures."

the interesting takeaways here

  1. it did detect it, despite being way less accurate than pangram. how? I have no idea. the cosine similarity between ur essay and gpt-4.1 is more than twice as high as the cosine similarity between known-human essays and your essay
  2. this points to an interesting failure mode. what I kinda thought would happen was that my model would fail and pangram's would succeed, because mine is less accurate and you would think that they're looking for the same cues as each other, they're both looking for the same signs of LLM-ness or human-ness. but apparently this isn't the case, they're both looking for something different

"I worked with a welder, who used to work for our states d.o.t. previously. As his house was right beside a main highway, one of his former coworkers thought it was funny to wipe out his mailbox with the snowplow repeatedly.

Over the summer, He proceeded to sink a length of well pipe into the ground, fill it with concrete, and weld up a custom mailbox. It had a normal looking box over top, so you couldn't tell just how solid it was.

First snowstorm, he wakes up to a loud noise, and sees flashing lights just past his house. Former coworker plowdriver goes to wipe his mailbox out, and breaks the wing on the plow.

Never screw with a welder."

"We had a similar issue, and similar response, when I was in junior high. One of the high school students, we assumed he lived in the neighborhood, would use his souped up truck with cattle guard to bulldoze mailboxes after home football games (central Texas). My dad got a six foot steel pipe, dug a 3 foot hole, filled the hole and the pipe with cement and attached a plastic mailbox that clipped on and would just pop off if hit from the side. Without fail, the mailbox was hit, and it popped off, but the trap worked. The truck rammed it, probably at 35-40 mph (speed limit of 25 mph), and did manage to bend the pipe, but didn't knock it over, however, because of the trucks velocity and the new angle of the pipe meant it it was now on tip of the pole. Enter panic mode. If the kid had just kept going forward, he probably could have unstuck himself, but he put it in reverse and floored it. Remember, I said it was souped up? He reversed full speed with his suspension and front quarter panel hooked on the pole. The next day his dad threatened to sue my dad, until my dad threatened to turn his son in to the USPS. I never saw the truck again and not a single mailbox was purposefully destroyed in the neighborhood, for years."

#

these are all hilarious stories

#

"My favorite killer mailbox story was relayed to me by my grandpa. He said he had a neighbor who kept getting his mailbox run over, so he devised a mailbox on a pivot. At the buried end of the pivot was a ball with spikes on it. When the mailbox was run over the next time, the ball hit the car's oil pan. There was reportedly a trail of oil leading directly to the disabled vehicle and the culprit."

"We used to have this problem. We lived in the sticks and we would have problems in the fall with out of town hunters and there yard apes destroying mailboxes. Our mail person wouldn’t deliver our mail if the mail box was knocked down so we would have to drive the 25 miles one way to the post office to get our mail. My mom decided we would put down 10 foot piece of 3 inch drill stem and put a barrel on top of it with the mailbox. It didn’t take long for dumbass to try and run over it that night. The next morning we found a ford pickup wrapped around our mailbox with 3 head shaped round circles in the windshield. Never did have mailbox problems after that."

"Just makes me think of the story a guy wrote about how the city snowplow kept destroying a mailbox and the city’s response was along the lines of “wimpy mailbox”, so the homeowner went to the postal office and figured out the restrictions on mailboxes and built an indestructible one. Next time the snowplow came through the mailbox won and the homeowners response was along the lines of “wimpy snowplow” "

#

"My best friend's parents had this issue. It happened weekly. They would hit the mailbox and the garbage can at the same time. Scattering trash all over the yard. They didn't end up replacing the mailbox with something better. Just a regular mailbox on a post, trash can right next to it. And a trash bag on the ground in between them. Except the trash bag had a huge Boulder in it. We held the bag open and his dad rolled it right into it then tied it shut. The next day there was a bumper on the front yard and radiator fluid leading out into the road. The bag was all tore up and you could see the scratched up Boulder inside. But it never happened again."

# late ingot Generally making booby traps is illegal even if you've already been the victim o...

people have argued (and i think this is correct, despite generally disagreeing with the point they're making) that booby trap is a bit of a stretch here. the reason booby traps are illegal generally, as i understand it, is because you can't really control their deployment. the shotgun trigger tied to the doorknob could be triggered by a burglar breaking in, or by a paramedic coming through the door when you need medical attention. you can argue that, like, a kid could crash his bike into your retarded concrete mailbox, but that's still a pretty far cry from how the concrete mailbox would affect someone intentionally trying to destroy it, you know?

#

The proportionate response to someone wandering around your garden damaging stuff or trying to pull stuff down would be something like barbed wire or anti-climb paint

#

Because ultimately barbed wire hurts and can do a bit of damage, but generally wont inflict severe injury

#

Anti-climb paint ruins clothes

#

And also makes it way easier to identify the criminal in the aftermath

#

Neither works for a mailbox smasher but really you should just have a camera pointed at the box

Proportionality is what gets considered in broad terms when looking at "standing your ground" in common law (that is, when the conditions aren't explicitly set out in legislation) and usually comes down to whether you could retreat or whether you were really facing imminent threat

crimson pagoda
#

anti climb paint is cool

late ingot
#

People would pull down our election signs so we put anti climb paint on some of the big ones

Since it would be disproportionate to have sharp edges or barbed wire

#

SPUD TODAY

crimson pagoda
#

pangram's classifier has latched onto some set of LLM-ified text markers

#

but

#

that's not all LLM-ified text markers

#

their classifier was trained to discriminate against this subset of features that led to extremely high accuracy

#

and so the accuracy is achievable even without having a perfect map of what makes text human or LLM

#

my embedding model is picking up on a much larger set of text features overall, but does not apply them as sharply and so accuracy isn't as high

crimson pagoda
#

there is apparently a very rich and almost completely invisible set of text features that point either to AI-ness or human-ness

#

i think the assumption i was working under previously, which i have to revise now

#

was that pangram had maybe not complete coverage of this set of features, but like, good enough coverage of these features

#

it seems that there must be some larger set that they're getting pretty weak coverage on

stray tiger
stray tiger
#

Those are intensely popular in AI generated text, but also in PPT lecture notes and some scientific papers

crimson pagoda
#

hmmmmm

#

I feel like I'm having a hard time explaining why this is so weird to me

#

I'm having trouble putting it to words

stray tiger
#

Or take it into account in addition to other factors?

#

Because it's the convergence of factors that makes text likely to be LLM generated anyway?

#

They're probably ones with poor discriminatory accuracy during an intersection condition or something

crimson pagoda
#

I'm sure it weights them to some degree because it can't fully ignore any piece of text that's fed into it, but what I mean is, they're not a strong decision boundary making tool in the process. at least, that's how it appears to me from the (admittedly limited) testing I've done on their effect on pangram's output

crimson pagoda
#

I'm not sure

stray tiger
# crimson pagoda yeah, maybe that's part of it

A lot of the "lecture notes" or "structured text" factors tend to go together, might be part of it. Maybe you have a real inefficiency if it really comes off as that weird to you, you know how this works better than most people on earth

#

It does seem like they could somehow have taken this into account if it's even possible for you to detect with (presumably) more limited resources

round lion
#

Did anybody post pics of themselves on AI and asked it to modify ur self to look different for example u wanna look emo goth with arm tattoos and face tattoos with piercings all over and spiky dyed hair in multi colours?

stray tiger
#

Nothing related to LLMs is as intensely efficient and effective as we'd like to think though. Like that godawful OAI system prompt I couldn't believe was real?

crimson pagoda
#

I guess what's so surprising to me here is that

#

pangram's accuracy is absurdly good, like absolutely shocking to me still

stray tiger
crimson pagoda
#

of course I know you can RL around the features that it's looking to detect AI with

#

but I would've thought that this would be a more complete coverage of all features

stray tiger
#

🤔

crimson pagoda
#

I think my revised view of pangram now is

#

they have locked onto a very efficient set of features

#

but in spite of their extremely high accuracy, they are still missing an enormous amount of rich understanding of textual features

#

probably because their whole training goal from step 0 is that they need to discriminate AI vs human

hat said caffeinated coffee reduced anxiety, psychological distress, blood pressure, and improved attention and stress coping, while decaffeinated coffee enhanced sleep, physical activity, and memory. Both types lowered stress, depression, impulsivity, and inflammation, while also boosting mood and cognitive performance. Coffee influenced the gut microbiome, increased beneficial (poly)phenols and metabolites, and provided anti-inflammatory effects, suggesting that coffee, regardless of caffeine content, supports cognitive, psychological, immune, and metabolic health in distinct but complementary ways.

# polar folio so its not very humanlike and not very llm-like right? is that what it means?

no, it's still firmly out of the human-o-sphere. not as firmly as before, but firmly still. you can see it is still significantly more similar to gpt-4.1 (0.6033) than to the closest human category, train:lesswrong (0.4637). the human essay baseline category ("human" in the table) is at 0.4351, but this may be somewhat contaminated by the fact that a lot of the essays in my dataset are somewhat low quality. I'm inclined to believe it finds lesswrong more similar because lesswrong content is just actually better than most of my essays in the dataset lol
check out the PCA chart. you can see the new essay you sent me gets closer to human-space but it's still quite distant. some of the lesswrong content comes pretty close to matching the new essay in style though. very interesting

Classic literature no stand. What counts as a "classic" shifts with the big culture. Word permanent, list behind changing, changes say what is value.

Literature was  word., stories made by storytellers . Gilgamesh, the Iliad, living acts. Once stories were clayed, papryrusd, or  parchmented, they could live long. Text is immortal.

Th big writing spread,  drama, philosophy, and history spread. Scholars spread and argued. In the Middle Ages, monks preserved, Japan, Europe, and the Islamic world preserved. The Tale of The Divine Comedy was one culture. Never universal.

Renaissance was the big Greek and Roman ideas again, humans are god. Shakespeare was strange now not. The printing press was worth reading, but divided readers. Romantic writers didn't need to be epic.

The nineteenth century belonged to Dickens he dissect class, labor, and power. Books crossed borders more easily, on boats. great works started to smoke crack.

Then came the big 20. We started questioning how stories are told. Writers pushed back against Western cowboys and widened the map of the world. Radio, no reading.

what is a classic? TikTok or Wattpad is classic. Next great epic come from a video game. A classic is defined by age. work that refuses to go away. @crimson pagoda high on pangram

In his undergraduate thesis, Finnish cognitive scientist Lassi Liikkanen (2004) carried out an
extensive review of persistent musical imagery as manifested within relative silence. He
identified four types of “ongoing musical experience” that are, at present, difficult to clearly
discriminate amongst:

  1. simple musical imagery – simply recreating a song in your mind
  2. cognitive itch – used to describe the self-perpetuating process underlying the song-stuck-
    in-your-head phenomenon by analogy
  3. functional musical hallucinations – hallucinated music in the absence of an identifiable
    neurological etiology
  4. organic musical hallucinations – hallucinated music associated with neurological damage or deficits, e.g. stroke, hypoxia, neurosurgery or head trauma
Each of these phenomena – surprisingly common, potent and novel – provides insight into our obsession with music at a base cognitive level and into how we handle silence as a result thereof.

The ability to get a song “stuck in one’s head” is a complex, yet rarely-questioned human quirk. After all, even though it is readily reproduced in a controlled setting (L Liikkanen 2009) and almost every individual in Western societies reports experiencing so-called “involuntary musical imagery” when questioned, (J Kellaris 2003) it shares more features in common with psychosis
or obsessive-compulsive symptomatology than it does with normal perception. Suffering from
this temporary affliction means being compelled to repeat a short selection of (usually lyrical)
content, mantra-like, in a largely predetermined tone and meter, with room for some superficial improvisation but little room for deviation. In some ways, musical hallucinations (MHs) can be seen as an extreme case of this, in which music present solely “in the head” is explicitly perceived as being real.

This is from the second part of the essay, this is less likely to break it.

How do you ask someone about their experience of or even their thoughts on silence, particularly in a musical context? The difficulty that subjects have in taking this line of questioning seriously is understandable; after all, you are asking them about a case they likely perceive as having zero semiotic density. For ease of sample collection, I broached the subject without the benefits of a preconstructed setting, generating responses that ranged from laughter and incredulity to an immediate descent into seriousness to, most interestingly, anger. This anger came up again and again, particularly later into my interviews when I would mention the scholarship and artwork of John Cage. Certain subjects saw his famous composition 4’33” as “ridiculous”, “useless”, “a… waste” and were infuriated by the idea that he could do effectively nothing and pass it off as art. Just like blank canvases – another example of extremely low semiotic density – tend to inspire hostile reactions from those expecting visual art to contain explicit potential signs, many individuals respond negatively to music with extremely low semiotic density (e.g. silence, individual notes, single frequency tones or ambient noise). My early responses to this led me to ask my subjects what they felt were the minimal sonic requirements for a piece of audio to be considered music. Notably, not a single subject was able – or even wholeheartedly attempted – to pin down an answer to this relatively simple question.

Without exception, those subjects with substantial involvement in the study or practice of music gave answers that were far more detailed and generally showed a proportional increase in evasiveness and inner conflict in crafting their response.

Deep sea creatures no stand. What counts as a fish shifts big pressure. Word permanent, list behind changing, changes say what is alive.
Squid was the big fish and shark ideas again, whales are god. Dog was strange now not. The sonar was worth finding, but divided scientists. Biological creatures didn't need to be big.
Ocean was word., creatures made by darkness. Anglerfish, the squid, living acts. Once creatures were gilled, finned, or tentacled, they could live long. Body is immoral.
The big water spread, jellyfish and worms spread. Scientists spread and argued. In the deep trenches, vents preserved and Indian ocean preserved. The Giant Squid was one tree. Never universal.
The one nine century belonged to Darwin he dissect species, evolution, and power and church. Creature crossed oceans more easily, on currents. great discoveries started to smile.
Then came the big two 0. We not know how life works. Science pushed back against big surface cowboys and the map of the deep became wider. Submarines, no seeing, not any.
what is a fish? Jellyfish or squid is fish, is it fish. Next great creature come from a thermal vent. A fish is defined by depth. creature refuses to go away that lives.

Like I have this as a system prompt for Claude:

You are answering general questions or assisting with brainstorming in a relatively casual way. The user is asking out of curiosity rather than using the information in any professional or practical capacity. Avoid seeming human or showing emotional intonations in your reply - simply reply matter of factly, citing relevant information and other useful context. Avoid trying to "mythbust" or assuming the the user has common misconceptions unless clearly evident in their message. Avoid noting whether the question is interesting or acting as if you have your own intellect or opinion on matters. Answer in significant depth and cite specific events or concepts where needed.

Why did the Kingdom of Hanover's coat of arms go to therapy?

It had a serious identity crisis, spent years wearing the British Royal Arms like a hand-me-down jacket, shoved its own Welf horse right in the middle like "no really, I'm my own kingdom," and even swapped out the motto hoping nobody would notice. The therapist just sighed and said, "Look, we both know you're George III in a trench coat."

The anti-AI crowd is giving “real farmers don’t use tractors” energy, and it’s getting old.

Look, I get it. “AI slop” is everywhere.

Bad AI art, hollow AI writing, shitty music being generated, chatbots regurgitating nonsense. There’s plenty to criticize. But I’m noticing a legitimate critique is slowly turning into a tribal identity, and now reflexively hating anything AI-adjacent has become the intellectually lazy default for a lot of people online.

The thing is, we’ve been here before. When the mechanical tractor started replacing horse-drawn plows in the early 20th century, farm...
