Not nearly as much as a dev, nowhere close, but yes, you'll be in trouble or have little room for growth if you know zero code. I mean, from what I've heard

It's more that you can't move outside your lane at all, can't mess with scripts beyond a certain complexity, can't debug... I knew a couple people that hated coding and just wanted to do IT work and all of them found coding skills to be useful or essential at some point

Knowing a little bit of coding or scripting isn't the same as being a full stack code monkey, but being the IT expert with zero background isn't a great idea either.

Being able to read and adjust code can give you the ability to AI your way through + adjust debug scripts, for instance

I mean when I worked as a software architect, I released a price of software with a text based UI that was all in cmd/batch to automate aspects of new system configuration and customization. Blurs the lines between scripting and development I guess

For IT work, probably not, I mean maybe scripting languages. Python is a super common first one now..

Otherwise, maybe java/Javascript, C#. I don't know. My first coding class was Java and C++ I think, but it was an electronic and computer engineering intro course

A lot of scripting and automation is done in python, AI heavily employs python

It's mostly just useful to learn the basic grammar of coding so you can read and debug and pick up other things, and put the basic competence on a resume too. I wouldn't be comfortable guessing, though if you had to pick one I'd lean toward python 🤔
