GM! I'm having issues getting Sonar Reasoning's API to obtain and deliver live data (eg stats, stock prices). I've instructed it to perform searches for this and other info, and in its thinking, it's indicating that it doesn't have that ability and doesn't know how to proceed. Am I missing something? Hi all,

Quick question about the Perplexity API ... I am a full-stack developer, and have done a little research on this already, but I am not finding any info on this yet, so I am asking here...

I am able to successfully call the API from Python/n8n clients, using any of the different Perplexity models, but I am curious about specifically calling the FINANCE features of Perplexity from the API (similar to what can be done using the Web Interface.

I know Perplexity has a partnership with (and gets its financial data from) Financial Modeling Prep. Alternatively, I have already set up a FMP MCP server on my VPS, and I am able to use the FMP thru the MCP server also, but this is complex to maintain, and I am using 2 APIs for this setup.

Is there a better way to handle this? Is it possible to just call the Perplexity FINANCE features through the Perplexity API directly, without also using the FMP MCP server/client setup? (I'm thinking of being able to just query the Perplexity API Finance feature by just passing a ticker symbol, and getting a detailed breakdown, similar to the web interface). Or, is this something I will need to build out manually, in my Python script/n8n workflow(s)?

Please let me know your thoughts! Hopefully, this all makes sense!

For anyone curious about using the Perplexity API for Finance, I've done some more research. It looks like (as of 2025-12-11) the API only supports sec mode (no finance mode yet).

It looks like the API Finance functionality is in the roadmap, here: https://docs.perplexity.ai/feature-roadmap#finance-tools-integration

So, it looks like we're waiting (for now).

Side note, I do there might be a way to call the REST API finance endpoint directly, by snooping the browser devtools network traffic, and reconstructing the HTTP requests manually - but that seems like more work than what I want to do right now 🤣

The best workaround I have found so far, is using the Financial Modeling Prep MCP server (this is where Perplexity gets their data from anyways) self-hosting it, and using it with self-hosted n8n workflows to automate pulling market data

That's correct - either store it, or just read it and use it without storing it. But, either using the Perplexity Finance tools, or the Financial Modeling Prep MCP tools, neither supports realtime price feeds. It's just a request to fetch the data at a single point in time, and then close the connection. Live realtime pricing market data (constant feed) is VERY expensive (my employer pays $2k+ per month for live market data, and that's cheap).

Sounds like that's what I was getting out of that but at least you can test with it. It matters what information you want/need as there are other alternatives that are cheaper.

Overall, the data is EXPENSIVE for real time APIs.

FYI - Finnhub supports very cheap options for fetching market data, but they use a different data provider (BAT, not NASDAQ) so their pricing data is not the same, for example, if you have an open window with TradingView open, and looking at the Finnhub pricing data, the prices will always be a few pennies off ... and sometime almost (up to) 50 cents off in rare cases

Thanks! Ran some tests yesterday and the same cURL could be ~4 or ~30 sec. Weird. Metrics today show the average has returned to about 4 ish secs for me. I was assuming something on perplexity end with server load and returned to normal now. Thanks for the reassurance it wasnt just me!

This is honestly something we've noticed with the API since we've been using it over the last year. Same query, same parameters, same timeframe we will see perplexity respond either really quick, or really really slow. Unfortunately feels a lot like luck of the draw at times

Hi! When using the Sonar API to search for information on the internet, there is a delay in updating the content on the website due to the indexing of websites. The Sonar API does receive data from websites, but the new information becomes available only after about 24 hours. This is due to the delay in updating the index.
Is there a way to speed up the indexing of websites or completely bypass (remove) the indexing step to receive data immediately after it is published (immediately)?

Does sonar / search api not support getting results from the news? I seem to be able to get results from fox news, abc news, but not the vast majority of major news providers. In fact, when I ask for current events I get source/search results from youtube back more frequently than actual news site sources. Or search result/sources is empty. wtf, I use the api nearly dayly, but when I do use the webui I probably use tons more cost in queries than it would cost with the api directly, like way more in a day than I normally use the api for in a month, or at least it would be if I left the llm selector on sonar. It's complete bs to have to use the webui but do they seriously not think such a small amount of api credit isn't worth it to get users to try out sonar, I mean it got me to go from having no idea what it is to figuring out how to use it and considering paying for more. Hey Team, i’ve emailed to [e-mail] and the support email a few times now, my prepaid credit for sonar & sonar pro that I paid for went missing since the new api platform migration. I can still see the api keys, but my balance is gone and the usage amounts that I was tracking are missing. Payment info etc all vanished as well. It wasn’t much money, but I would love to see it resolved so I can get confidence to buy more credits. Thank you

Yeah unfortunately it seems a lot of benefits are being stripped away from Perplexity members.

It's been going on for quite some time now and most changes being made are either things that either diminish the quality of the service or if it is an addition to the service, it is something that no one asked for in the first place.

The $50 topup screwed over several of my projects. Did we get notification of it?

I had it set to top up to $20, and all my API keys just stopped working and my payment method was deleted from the account, while silently (to my knowledge) failing

Same with the pro credits removal

No real screenshot. It just had my account balance at 0, and when I went to top it up, it showed a $50 minimum.

I checked my auto-top-up, and it hadn't triggered (was set to top to $10, once it went below $2). I tried to change that amount, to see if that would trigger it to fill, and it wouldn't let me set an amount below $50.

It also had no linked payment methods, but I have the billing notes (through Perplexity) of the past payments made using a stored card

I'm sure the API error was the no balance / out of funds error, but it shouldn't have hit that with auto top-up enabled
