If you got your Perplexity Pro subscription as part of a deal (for example with a Revolut subscription or something like that) your Pro access will be on pause until you link a credit card to your account (you have to do it on the web, not from the app). They changed this to avoid fraud apparently. Until now, you didn’t have to give your credit card info at all to get your free subscription. Now you have. But you still won’t be charged until your deal terms are over. In my case, I was paused today. I added my card information and now it resumed my Pro access. I wasn’t charged.

But let’s say you cancel your Revolut subscription, it makes sense Perplexity would like to have the opportunity to charge you now. Before, they didn’t have your card information so they couldn’t. Perplexity's fact-checking accuracy is around 92% when used with proper prompting. I tested multiple AIs on their deep research capabilities (about fact checking) by submitting queries for which I already knew the answers. Perplexity was correct in every case the only other model/service that performed as well was Gemini's deep research. Qwen, Claude and ChatGPT all performed poorly essentially, everything else failed.

Actually Gemini noticed one additional fact that even Perplexity didn't notice. But I'd say that the only competitor to Perplexity is Gemini. Gemini is just much more slower than Perplexity.

It depends, but in that test it did. But Perplexity wasn't wrong at all... It just didn't point one extra fact there.

I spend around 1-2 hours to make that test manually by submitting the data using thinking and non-thinking models from different provider.

@dry hollow I have just had a chat with Perplexity support via chat and they told me to use the web version (not mobile app) go to my account, and update the billing plan, where it says your subscription has been paused. There you will be asked for a valid credit card, you should use the Revolut one and everything should work now.
In addition to my case, they refund the previous charge I received, so everything is fine to me now.

You should have received an email from Perplexity about it, but they added a requirement to have a credit card tied to promotional accounts as well. Once a card is added, it should resume the subscription (and won't charge until the end of the promotion term). If you want to ensure you don't get charged, you should be able to cancel the subscription, and it will still continue until the completion of the term. Double check your email to verify that's the reason.

According to the documentation, you do have unlimited Pro searches with 'Best' mode... the 200 limit is for the reasoning models. I think Flash Thinking should have a hgiher limit, since it's much cheaper normally, but ... I guess the limit makes some kind of sense for the ones that are normally $10-$15 per million tokens.

AI is something that has the potential to change how wars are fought ... it's a force amplifier. It's not just that it can be weaponized with robots or control autonomous drone swarms, etc, but used properly it can also result in faster timelines, more quickly discovering new vulnerabilities, etc. Export controls attempt to mitigate that risk profile by trying to keep the most enabling components and infrastructure out of the hands of adversaries. In my opinion it's not really an effective control considering most AI researchers are in China, and they have demonstrated they have the technological capability to keep up with AI development. Maybe there are other reasons for it, but in any case, many have written about AI research likening it to that kind of old cold war mentality... even if the strategies on that front more likely have to shift to reflect the realities of the modern world.

It depends in what context you're asking. If you run comet, there are likely still risks using agentic AI, even though they have patched some that have been found. But regular LLM queries from the web UI does not have agentic risks. If you're asking about image generation and whether it's completely safe, that's another question. Think of that more like a tool, how its used can be positive or negative depending on the individual. Perplexity has policies to prevent misuse, and it's restricted in some regions to comply with laws where applicable, but at the end of the day if a person tries to use something in a bad way they will probably find bad uses.

Perplexity isn't primarily oriented around images or video, its limits are quite low for those things, but for providing information. Information can also be used for positive or negative ends.

It's good for answering questions, but the law varies greatly from case to case, and you'd need to consult a lawyer for almost all real-world use cases [as well]. Asking an LLM just gets you a start, and that's important, but it will always be constrained by both the information that's available to it and the context that is provided in the question. Be mindful that LLMs do not always provide completely correct information.

That Perplexity provides references for validation when Web sources are enabled can be a big help for validating information.
