I think perplexity prioritizes finding constants of interest, and in this use case, it wasn't able to find enough content to provide you with a good answer.

You can try using the "Enhanced" search feature, which is powered by GPT-4 (with 5 uses per hour), although I can't guarantee that it will work as intended.

At the end of the day, it's just a search engine that is not in any way better than ChatGPT without access to the internet, and it's meant for searching and gathering information from the web.

Yeah, that's true. It is a step-above compared to only relying GPT-4. With GPT-4, when trying to calculate the mean of a set of numbers, it's often wrong. With Wolfram + GPT, it's much accurate and consistent.

OpenAI has a free AI generated text classifier https://platform.openai.com/ai-text-classifier . I'm doing my senior project's paper and it's either "unclear" or "possibly" AI generated text.
If you are worried that Turnitin flagging your text as AI-generated can cause you trouble at school, the link above might as well worth a try, and you can try to edit your text until you get a result that isn't AI-generated on that.

Hello, I’ve been using the wolframalpha plugin and have noticed that it can also handle questions that wolframalpha was not designed for like Linux commands and translations
Does the model default to its own knowledge-base or use other plugins automatically to figure out an answer if the question is not appropriate for wolframalpha? Because it sometimes specifies that wolframalpha has no information about the topic and other times, it answers as if it got its answer with the help of wolframalpha when that is unlikely to be the case

But I usually use punctuation, and it seems this feature glitched out as the concise mode is longer while the detailed mode is shorter, or sometimes they have the same length and same quantity of information.

If you select youtube it will also return videos that you can watch directly on perplexity. That is the main difference. I tested some and selecting reddit or using internet with the site:reddit.com search operator and it does return the same results. So the reddit option is just a quicker way to search reddit without the search operator.

You can verify this yourself easily. Furthermore, Copilot is much more advanced feature and uses GPT-4 more heavily so the usage is scaled proportionally.

Depending on how many calls to OpenAI Copilot makes per query this could quickly chew through five or ten bucks a day just on the limited Copilot queries already available. They use a smart sequence of language models for processing your question and extra scraped data from the web, but also for selecting certain web results and selecting wether an question or task is worthy of being processed by GPT-4 or not. Besides all of that they also finetuned their models differently so although they might make use of GPT-4 and GPT-3.5-turbo, that doesn't mean they generate the same kind of answers.

For having this big of a sequence of different models, they ofcourse need to hardcode guidelines so that the sequence follows through without any errors. So that changes the whole nature of the dialogue style. You can't interact with it like in chatGPT. It's not a chatbox, more like a browsing assistant that does the browsing for you.

Please correct me if I'm wrong btw, but this is my assumption and for as far as I've read in their Q&A.

Now I have my own question: How are we actually supposed to use this tool? In what scenario's, In what kind of style should we prompt to get good results? etc...

I mean I’ve noticed the chatgpt plus version of gpt-4 getting a bit dumber in the last few days, so I’ve switched to just using the API, and the plugins aren’t as good as I thought they’d be, some of the third party ones are good but the default browsing is terrible (haven’t got code interpreter yet), even in the API the old version of gpt-4 seems a bit smarter

I also made a weird discovery with the version of gpt-4 that’s used for plugins, if you keep putting more and more text in it can still remember everything (or at least it did yesterday) I think I had one chat with 12k words or about 16 to 17k tokens, so they must be using the 32k version, since it was able to remember basically everything in the conversation. It definitely gets dumber as you add more stuff (I think people noticed that Claude has similar issues with the 100k model). It’s pretty hilarious if they are letting people have such long conversations with the full 32k model as I think it would cost them around $1.92 per prompt if you use the full 32k, so technically a single person using all their prompts (if they keep allowing people to use the 32k model) could cost OpenAI around $10k a month

Its insane. AI will probably die out once all the investments are gone. Every time they try to make their models cheaper, they become super stupid (like gpt3.5-turbo). So I guess we’ll see repeating patterns now. So the real evolution of AI is slowing down. And people can’t live with that.

Also question about perplexity, are they implementing their own custom vector data bases for search, I think it would be pretty easy to use something like the Ada-text-embedding model to get a pretty good semantic search, of course making it work and figuring out what data to embed might be harder, but perplexity seems to be beating bing chat on most advanced topics so it would seem like they must be doing something more than just using standard search engine/BERT + LLM

Have you guys thought about using different types of vector embeddings for different subjects, for instance getting a more powerful LLM to comb through (although extremely costly) a bunch of papers and create specialised types of summaries that capture semantic aspects of the papers (maybe using different types for different subjects), then using a smaller seq2vect model to embed things and make a searchable database, if you had enough money you could do all sorts of things by extracting semantic information and embedding/clustering it, like looking for outliers or original ideas as soon as they are published, assessing the originality of ideas in papers or finding really good ideas that are buried in the literature (although I think this would cost an exceptionally large amount to do)

we will record a video, but for now this is a show instruction:

1. in chrome: go to settings, then search engine.
2. add new search engine "press add"
3. in the form type these: "Perplexity AI", "p", "https://www.perplexity.ai/?s=o&q=%s"
4. this will make you search by prefixing your query with "p", for examples, "p what is gravity"
5. if you want to make it as a default, click on 3 vertical dots next to perplexity and select "make default"
6. now you will be able to just search in chrome as you do with Google.
