#Shaders recompiling on every game load
1 messages ยท Page 1 of 1 (latest)
Hi @forest tapir I am gonna toss you in here as well. I have seen at least a couple other people mention this issue, and while there are several possibly causes, including permissions and whatnot, it does seem suspicious enough to have 4 or 5 people have the same issues all at the same time of the update - so I am going to forward this on to the QA team at Keen.
If you both can do me a favor and drag and drop your Logs, DxDiag and save files in here so they have easy access to them I will forward them on. If you see anyone else with the issue can you also direct them here and ask them to do the same?
Instructions on what to put in here: https://enshrouded.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/9767167725853-Reporting-Bugs
Thanks Mojo
Thanks Bella.
I'll forward this on to them and see if they can see anything
Thank you too.
Many thanks!
here is my log
can you grab the DxDiag and Save files as well when you have a moment? the more information they have, the better.
gotta give the save games later I gotta get them from the cloud I guess. are the save games just json files?
my DxDiag and Save File
Thank you
@humble bridge if you might also do this, it would be appreciated. I have read the QA team in on the issue, and hopefully they'll be able to find the issue and fix it (or tell us how to if it is user side) with the information we provide.
(also sorry about the other ping - I was in the wrong thread ๐ It's been a long day.)
no problem ๐
I am also experiencing this issue. No issues before the update though. Random color flashes or dark flickers occasionally. Tried updating graphics drivers, messing with refresh rates, etc. Didn't seem to improve the issue. Thank You for starting this thread and keep us updated.
If you can also put the information requested in the first comment I made on here - it would be appreciated. โฅ
Our devs are looking into the issue, meanwhile please stay in main menu and wait for the shader compiling to finish before loading a savegame - this should reduce the visual issues.
@here ---^
The Shader compiling message doesn't show up on the main menu, at least for me. I waited a bit, loaded in and my shader was at 26%.
I don't see it anymore either
Mine is definitely much faster now. I'm still having the issue from the before. But from the troubleshooting chat, I was having trouble telling whether or not an attempted fix had already been put in for this yet.
Shader compiling still happening on every game load. Compiling takes a really long time to finish. ~15 minutes.
Includes savegame from december, before the patch and after the hotfix, the backup folder, dxdiag and the enshrouded.log
With the recent patch, my issue seems to be fixed. I haven't changed any settings and just updated the game.
@here Can you guys confirm whether or not you still have the issue after the second hotfix today?
Just loaded in to test and no issue with the shaders recompiling ๐ The bloom is still much worse than it was before update but that is a completly seperate issue. Thank you for all of your help @grave needle !
Shaders are compiling after restarting the game. Is that the intended behaviour? I still have graphical issues with flashing lights and screen going black for milliseconds (except UI elements that always stay on top even when everything else goes black)
Compiling Shaders takes 15 to 20 minutes every time I start the game.
This is happening even after the second update a couple hours ago?
Yes.
have you let them finish before closing out the game?
Yes.
Unfortunately, after the second patch, I started seeing the "shader compilation" again, and if I tried to close the game while it was in progress I would get a black screen for a few minutes. I'm not 100% sure if this issue was fixed in the first patch
yes
Okay. While it will recompile the first time after opening the game after an update or clearing your shader cache - it shouldn't be doing it every time. I'll let them know there is one that wasn't fixed. If you can follow the instructions at the top of this thread, and include the information requested, that will help them track down what might be causing your issue, as it seems different from what everyone else had.
Thank you. I already sent the bug report and included all requested files.
If you sent it before the updates they might think it was resolved with the fix they put out. You may want to send another one in explaining it wasn't fixed like the others.
@grave needle I just got on to try it and still experiencing the issues. Almost exact same as Nine Felwitch
Okay I will let them know. If you guys can put the information requested at the top of this thread in here, it will help the QA and dev team find out what the issue might be.
Includes my save games at various states (before patch, after patch, after hotfix), the backup folder, dxdiag and the most recent enshrouded.log
I have a video showing the graphical glitches on YouTube here https://youtu.be/cpB2GBDXSnU, recorded yesterday, but it is still happening.
I updated my graphics drivers today, but that didn't change anything.
Seems like we have done all the same stuff today lol. Minus the video. Looks like You have it worse though ๐ฆ
I followed the above instructions, but can't find my log file. Is that concerning?
Just moving the instructions down so others can see it without scrolling:
Please drag and drop your Logs, DxDiag and save files in here so the devs have easy access to them. If you see anyone else with the issue can you also direct them here and ask them to do the same?

It's in there. probably just doesn't have the .log showing. If file extensions are turned off it just looks like a text file named "Enshrouded"
Hopefully I do this correctly.
It's perfect, thank you.
also having to recompile shaders every turn with abysmal performance
Edit: i just changed the resolution% to 100% and i got 120% performance back. im now running on 70FPS while i struggled before to achieve even stable 30
settings which fixed performance incredibly were
- Renderscale from 75% to 100%
- shadows to from medium to low
- contact shadows from on to off
- dynamicGI from Balance to Performance
- SSAO from low to medium
- point shadows from lowest to disabled
Point shadows eat a lot of performance.
Hallo ๐ here's my zip file ๐๏ธ containing 3 folders ๐ for each info requested (soundzen_pt - log, dxdiag, local files) ๐
Shaders recompile anytime I join a game/restart the client. I've let them complete numerous times, verified game integrity, and reinstalled. I am getting disconnected from our server every 15-30 minutes as well.
Shaders recompile anytime I join restart the game. I get severe lagspikes every few minutes, and the ingame map takes long to load and is blocked by black rectangles which load in after some seconds. Mapparts that were already loaded are blocked again after scrolling to a different part and comming back
Since last update the game have been unplayable. The game is flickering, sunlight is pink, sometimes the entire screen is reduced pink and white. I believe my GPU is the minimum required GTX 1060 6GB. Several times I have seen the compiling shaders message. Adding log files
I have the exact same problem. Also GPU 1060
can you please also include the information requested above?
@grave needle I did so officially via support@enshrouded.zendesk.com>
sent them my enshrouded.log & backup.rar and DxDiag
What would be the analog of dxdiag for proton? Your instruction says nothing.
Otherwise the same problem - the game starts at 59% compiled shaders. Was working normally before the last update. Compiled them to 100% normally closing the game afterwards several times. Also steam shaders pre-compilation is turned off as otherwise steam starts compiling shaders for this game for 1-3 hours each time I restart it (The only other game which had this problem was Dragon's Dogma 1).
BTW i also experience the flickering, especially at sunset/sunrise
i find that toggling vsync on and off a few times gets rid of it thouhg
@haughty vapor - thank you, vsync off solved it for now, althoug the game crashed when I changed it. Now it is back to vsync on, I will try it out.
I am not too sure, I am not familiar with linux or proton. From the internet: If you are running wine, you can get dxdiag from inside there, otherwise maybe use glxinfo or vulkaninfo.
yeah, dxdiag in proton doesn't work for me (and even to try to run it I needed some tricks, steam doesn't really make this easy), and other two commands print out EVERYTHING, really everything. So I need the specific parameters the devs want from us...
All I can tell you is what I see in Dxdiag itself. I don't know what exactly they are looking for - they might not either. Dxdiag shows pretty much everything too from looking at it.
Ah, came here to see if anyone else was having this issue. Havent played since launch. Looks like I'll give the game some more time to cook.
Been sitting for around 15 minutes on a new save file and im at 42% compiling shaders ๐ข
Shaders take longer when you are in the world as opposed to outside of them, due to the fact that they throttle them to allow the game to at least run. If you just reinstalled, shader compilation is completely normal. If it is compiling every time, despite completing them, then Please include the information requested in this thread to help the devs narrow down the issue so they can fix it.
ok, here are vulkaninfo results then ๐
So, I have discovered something interesting. Because of all the crashing I decided to turn the world I was hosting into a server to mitigate progression loss. I was expecting to have the same issues but after playing for a couple of hours I noticed I haven't ran into any major graphical issues today and after rebooting the game and swapping between the server and hosting it via the client I noticed that when playing on the world hosted as a server the shaders only compiled once but when hosting it via the client the shaders kept recompiling. I've also noticed some pretty major performance boosts from running the server separately. Just thought I'd share this weird info
not quite sure what to make of it
I also experienced a great reduction in load and shaders compiling time after I moved my install from a hdd to a m.2 , So it might have been me
I also am experiencing an increase in load time (preprocessing on steam) just to get to the Keen screen and shaders always start at 1 4 % and take greater 15 minutes to complete. This has gone on since the update. I also had messy floors but that's been cleaned up.
Shader compilation has been occurring continuously since the update. Probably every time I restart the game client.
Tool_Fix says Clearing game shader cache in C:\Users****\AppData\Local\enshrouded\caches: Not Done (The directory was not found at this path.), so I think that even if I compile, nothing is actually saved.
There were no problems before the update, but after the update, lags and freezes have become frequent.
(It occurs whether or not shader compilation is displayed)
It seems to occur at the same point rather than time. When I arrive at a certain waypoint 1580m away with a glider, it always freezes for several tens of seconds. And even though it's frozen, the stamina gauge is being consumed in real time lol... so I guess it's not actually completely frozen.
Also, when I try to jump over a point in the level wood hallow hall with a hook, there is always a lag of several seconds.
And, the loading time of the game and the stiffness time at the altar of fire in teleportation are noticeably worse. I think these issues are due to the age of my computer, but at least I never experienced any problems before the update.
any news from devs on this?
They are looking in to it.
I just wanted you guys to know that I learned that they have a few fixes coming in the next patch that will hopefully fix several of these issues and also hopefully make shader compilation faster on the whole as well.
I am not sure if this means it will fix everything, but hopefully some of you will get some relief from the issue.
@grave needle Any mention of the lag issues?
Nothing specific. I pretty much said verbatum what I got with a little more caution thrown in ๐
thx
Hello, since the last update the game is crashing everytime. The shader recompiling starts on every game load and when it finish nothing changes, my weapon isn't loading, and when i fast travel everything is black and then the game crash. When i start again, the same happend.
Unfortunately, I have noticed a pattern with this issue and the 1060 6gb GPU with the causing of crashes. While I am not sure the issue is the cause or not, everyone, so far, that I have come across with the 1060 6gb that has this issue has had crashing that couldn't be resolved by the normal means.
Since this issue comes with a pretty serious degree of performance issues for everyone who is experiencing it, It does make sense that a minimum-spec card may have more that just minor issues, and it could cause crashing.
Just in-case this isn't the same issue causing your crashes, I suggest your type /minidump in this chat and follow the instructions sent to you by "the flame" bot in a DM.
Thanks for the reply, I know That the Card is weak but before the Update i can Play normal.
I just want you to know @grave needle that I appreciate the updates. I also found that my gaming drive is actully failing so I migrated my install to one of my new m.2 drives and the difference is night n day. I still see the shaders compile on every new launch of the client but its faster and I can see more while it loads/
Same for me... I have a AMD 6800XT... I';ve let it sit at the main menu screen for 25 minutes... go into game and it still compiles
everytime i launch the game i have to wait the recompiling shader before playing because its unplayable otherwise playing on a save from a friend the issue happen from the last to patches or at least has gotten to a point where my pc is crashing now, did already all the cleaning and systemupdates i could.
providing the file as you asked but following the instructions i could not find the log file.
The log file may show up as a text document named "enshrouded" if you have file extensions turned off.
ah is turned off indeed!
Any Progress ?
this is the latest information we have: #1334021713712644190 message
I'm sorry to ask, but does his patch already have a date, or at least a timeframe? the game is pretty much unplayable for me, lagging every five seconds and having no textures
There is a patch coming out tomorrow.
That's tomorrow German time. So somewhere after 24 hours from now.
Just in case you are still in yesterday. ๐
I see lol, it's fine
does ths also deal with preprocessing? Everytime i start the game i have to do that as well.
They haven't released the exact specifications of what is in the patch yet, as far as I am aware. That being said, they have said that they were working on several fixes for that issue that should be in the patch, but as to whether they will specifically fix the issues that you have that are associated with that problem, I can't say.
Checking in with everyone @here to see if you guys are still having this issue after the patch.
Heya! Resolved on my end!
good here Thanks all
All good on my end too! Thank you
I am glad to hear it ๐ If anyone is still having this issue, give me a ping.
hola. First run after patch: "Shaders compiling" on menu screen. Took a awhile. Once in game no more shader message (but still the world and map texturing loading issue).
Quit game and ran a second time. No shader loading message -- on menu, or in game. Quit game and am currently stuck on a black screen (in the game) for the last 5 minutes. PC is not locked up, though.
Had to terminate the Enshrouded process. Ran game a third time. No shader message in menu, or in game. So that part seems like it might be better.
Okay so the shader part is fine, but you still have the texture issue, and seem to have caught the exit game issue, is what I got from that?
Yes, you got that correct. Since this is a "shader" topic. I am leaving out details about texture issue/black screen, which I believe are already known issues. Thanks.
mY install is also fixed, Had to do a bunch of compiling on first launch but after 2 or 3 restarts to the game, it flows nice and quick
This is the thread for the texture issue - though I haven't heard back from anyone in there to see if it was fixed for anyone: https://discord.com/channels/1046840540550942720/1334988638831906899
This is the thread for the black screen on exit: https://discord.com/channels/1046840540550942720/1339699284777373848
I don't know why, but I was still getting issues with super long preprocessing on boot and compiling of shaders that lasted over 30 minutes to complete on each boot on the main menu, not even in game...
Then I deleted the entire game and did a fresh install. Now it compiled only on the first boot and subsequent boots were super fast with no compiling of shaders. Here's the files from today before I reinstalled the game. It's fixed for now, but still weird how I had to reinstall the game for it to fix itself. Why did the patch not work for me?
fixed for me too, on second run compiling is already done and doesn't start
Playing on Steam Deck. I'm seeing "Processing Vulkan Shaders" on every launch now. I let it complete the day before the patch (which in itself took 3-4 hours), and now it's showing again.
Do I let it re-run fully? I've been skipping as I don't have 3-4 hours to kill each day. Haha
I turned off steam shaders compiling completely, it's bugged for this game
It will show up after patches/updates, reinstalls and if your shader cache gets deleted. That is normal.
Sorry, I'm not sure I understand what you were saying. you are having an issue? Also you can't turn off shader compilation - you can turn off shader pre-caching in steam, which is different.
yes, turned off shader pre-cashing. The issue is steam re-makes it every restart. For hours. Though I haven't checked in this patch
If your game is downloading a small update every game, it's not the same issue as what people were having in this thread. If your game was compiling shaders every time you started the game (shown in the bottom left when you were inside your game) then it wasn't shader pre-caching - it was this bug.
yes; yes it was
lol - I mentioned two things.
Seems to be this is happening everytime I start the game on mine and my husbands computers. Is there something I am supposed to be doing to 'save" the settings for this to not happen each time? Or is this a "bug"? Thank you
They are STILL compiling, I have a super nice computer I thought with a 4090 rtx video card, 64gb ram, game is running on an ssd, 13th gen i9 processor?... Is there something I should change in the settings? It takes about 10mins to compile which is frustrating when i just want to get on and play.
The specific issue in this thread was one that was fixed in one of the previous patches. I would suggest posting exactly what your issue is in the main troubleshooting channel, as the only people who will see this are people that participated in this particular thread, so we can look through and figure out what is going on.
Ok thank you, discord is confusing to me.
Ys this issue just started for me. Makes me feel like Im playing on Steam deck, having to wait for shaders on every game launch. Definitely developing a pet peeve with this one.
Hey @sonic cave would you be able to post this in the main troubleshooting if you haven't already? This is a defunct thread from last update, and this is potentially a new issue.
My game is having the same issue
Please use the main troubleshooting channel. This thread is old and will not be seen by anyone but the people who participated in it back then.
