#The Raging Scotsman - Crash
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
After you reinstalled windows, what did you install and run that is the same as before? Anything? a virus scanner, firewall, recording software, that anti bloat thing, anything?
Also did you change any of the default settings in windows or anything like that?
no antibloat also turned off antivirus instantly no recording software nothing and never changed any settings at all
okay. I am going to type in a bunch of what we already did so that it's all in here and doesn't need to be searched for after this...
While I am doing that, could you download and install GPU-Z and run it before starting up your game.
Once running open up the "sensors" tab and expand the window to fit all the stuff it has in one screen.
Keep it running and start up the game again. When the game crashes, take a screenshot of the GPU-Z window and post it in here.
Yeah sure I’ll do that
U will need to give me a min I deleted the game and I am re-downloading it again to see if that will fix anything probs not and I done the clear cache thing too
- Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900K, 64gb RAM, Windows 10 Pro, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti
- Played the game before early last year and uninstalled it. Reinstalled it yesterday and has been crashing while preloading shaders every time.
- Did all 4 steps of /minidump DM
- Followed a YT video that suggested using compatibility mode for WIN 8 - Had them disable that.
- LiAnDrY's tool noted there was no cache folder, but this could be due to it not being able to start.
- Log file always stops at
[app] start creation step Preload - some instances of
[graphics] Failed to allocate download buffer memory.seen in some, but not all of logs. - Other than some Opera tabs, nothing seems to be eating up resources.
- LiAnDrY's tool successfully reinstalled the latest version of Vulkan
- Disabled an integrated GPU, did not have an effect on the crash or change the log.
- uninstalled the game, cleared download cache and reinstalled - no effect.
- Rolled back to GPU driver 566.14 - no effect
- Was using windows debloater. Believed it may have damaged their windows install, and reinstalled their windows. - No effect
that last one was after the crash?
no
okay
Are either of them close to full though?
Okay - I am going to see if I can't get some outside (or inside) input on this issue.
okay yeah no worries
Hey there, could you please check the crash dump folder? Should be here: ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Enshrouded\crash_dumps
Just .zip the folder which was created when you had the crash and send it here please
Just poking at you to make sure you see this.
@lucid plume @cyan sinew
I will leave this up to Kall. Though I am looking through the information, .dmp files are beyond my current knowledge.
thank you very much
Though while he does that you might want to run a memory test. MemTest86 is a good program for that and there is a free version, and a bit better than the windows diagnostic at finding issues with memory: https://www.memtest86.com/
It would, at least, rule it out as a cause.
I think there is no need to try it out for now, we're checking the crash on our end
okay no worries
right
two questions
- did you do Steam's "Check Installation files" already? Sorry if you did, I might be catching up still. If you haven't, please try it.
- If you have and it didn't work, go to the folder here:
...\Steam\steamapps\shadercache\1203620and just nuke its contents out of orbit, please. Delete everything there.
im not sure ill try this
And then run the game
by step 1 u mean the check integrity of game files yes?
Er, yeah
okay yeah iv already done both of these before but ive done them both again for u
and it still crashes on startup?
Doesn't hurt
In the meantime, I'll come back to you in a jiffy. I'm relaying the info to the devs
okay yea thats fine
This is just the Enshrouded.log. May I ask to visit the crash dump folder I sent you last time? And just paste here the latest folder that appeared
sure
or do the whole thing like last time, I can separate the last culprit
yeah looks good
allright
one more shot at this
sorry that you are being our test subject
all good
i just wanna play so im happy being ur test
at this point im invested lol
This is an easy one.
Within your Enshrouded folder ( ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Enshrouded ) there is a file called nvngx_dlss.dll .
Can you please add a " _" at the end of it, so it looks like this? nvngx_dlss.dll_
And run the game again
Please Enshrouded.log and CrashDump again
Thank you
faster than me
This will sound rude but I need to be 100% sure - did you really change the file name of the "nvngx_dlss.dll"? Could you please show me a screenshot, if possible?
allrigth, then it didn't do what we wanted it to do.
Can you please send me your enshrouded_local.json file, please?
we are going to write something in it to force it to do the thing we wanted it to do
not in here
i tried this before couldnt find the file either was trying to reset settings thinking that was maybe an issue
It's in your Save folder. Do you have a save folder in here? C:\Users\<YourID>\Saved Games\Enshrouded
How about here: ..\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[YourSteamID]\1203620\remote?
check the folder User Data
If you play alone, there should be a single folder there with a string of numbers
that is you Steam ID, we don't need to know that. But we do need you to enter this folder
Ok you already went one deeper. Anyway, open that 1203620 folder
Is there an "Enshrouded_User" file there?
nope just rem ote and a remote vdf file
Or a remote folder?
yeah
yeah my bad
1203620, then remote
enter that remote folder
and look for the User file
multitasking here, sry
this is all i got
Why do I see the dog in the fire gif in my head when you say that?
@lucid plume we're doing a transplant here
do you have an enshrouded_user.json in your save folder?
i dont have anything in my save folder
lol sure. one moment
wait, my bad
from where Enshrouded is installed - it's "Enshrouded_local.json"
sorry, our team is a bit short in size and I am having to deal with a bunch of stuff at the same time
No worries. I know you guys are busy and appreciate your time
idk what im doing now
am i downloading this ??
not yet
okay
Please visit ...\Steam\steamapps\common\Enshrouded once more
And look for Enshrouded_local.json - not "_user.json"
ive never been able to see hte json even before contacting u guys
Well here you go, please take this file, download it and paste it into the folder you showed in that screenshot
okay
Once you did, please try starting the game again
Crashdump once more, please.
ah
You may have a setting in windows that hides certain files?
Maybe removing the (1) from the file name?
yeah ill try that
If it doesn't work,
ive turned tht setting off that hides files in file explorer
then please remove the (1) and try again
make sure to get the space before the (1) too.
im going to walk my dog ill be 10 mins type what u need me to do and ill do it when im back sorry
hey im back
Right, so, here's the thing -
We think that the issue is with your PC trying to initialize DLSS, which is one of the ways you can render stuff in our game.
What we did so far were attempts to make sure the DLSS did NOT start up.
just so you know what's going on
Maybe they can use NVidia app to disable it?
its using fsr rn anyway
I dunno, that's not really under my purview of knowledge. If it can somehow make sure that DLSS is not being used and change it to FSR3, that'd be great
Is this your Nvidia app settings?
Huh
Is there a way you can make the Nvidia Graphics app not set stuff up for the game?
@lucid plume do you know?
yeah - let me find it
even in the file u sent me it was set to fsr renderer
NVidia App is the new Geforce Experience... they changed some stuff so I'll need to find it
Yeah, that's the intention, but I'm wondering if somehow the nvidia app thing is causing a conflict
ill just delete it
no
its set to fsr in the app too so id
what isnt?
Gonna double check this to be sure, but I believe if the app were changing it, it would change it to the settings on the right. It would say "Optimized" on it
yea i get the option to optimize
says rn game is not optimized
also says currently usuing fsr
so apps not changing it
Ah okay - so head over to "Settings" in the app and click on the "features" tab. scroll down and make sure "Automatically optimize newly added games and apps" is turned off.
It's NVidia App - previously known as Geforece Experience
okay its off now
I would say, just to be safe, grab that file again from above, make sure to rename it and then put it back in the folder and restart to see if that fixed it
restart pc or just the game
sorry just start the game 😄
still crashing

This will sound very shite and I apologize for it, but we're kind of fresh out of ideas.
You could try deleting the nvngx_dlss.dll_ and see if it works, but at this point I doubt it will.
Another thing you can do is turn off Steam Cloud, but again - I doubt that is the problem.
What I'm guessing here is that there is a conflict between that Nvidia App and our Enshrouded_local.json file, but I need first to sit down and test it.
This will require deeper testing and it may take a while.
I'm saying this not because we give up and will leave you hanging, but rather to not waste your time any further waiting for our suggestions.
Since this will require some more testing on our side, it can take days or weeks to find out what is happening.
If you feel like refunding the game, that is absolutely understandable
the game should work but isn't, so you should get your money back
