Info from outside thread:

  • Did all but DDU in /minidump
  • Self-hosting on decent system
  • "VK_ERROR_DEVICE_LOST" is avery generic error.
  • LOT of [graphics] Failed to allocate download buffer memory. in the log file.
#

Okay - now for some questions. ๐Ÿ™‚

#

Are you and your wife both crashing?

severe anvil
#

No - only me.

waxen aurora
#

and the system you have the server on is a different system than the one you are playing on?

severe anvil
#

Correct. Server is an entirely different machine and is used just for headless server tasks.

waxen aurora
#

Okay ๐Ÿ™‚ just making sure.

#

Do you notice any patterns to the crashing at all? Like they happen within a certain amount of time after loading the game, or when things happen like teleporting or anything else?

severe anvil
#

There's no rhyme or reason. We can be adventuring and I'll crash in the middle of combat. Or I can just be at the workshop bench.

waxen aurora
#

Is it happening frequently enough that you think you could "catch it" with something like GPU-Z running?

severe anvil
#

I do have Afterburner with hardware monitoring on another display.

#

It does happen frequently enough, and I can throw HWInfo or GPU-Z up as well.

waxen aurora
#

I'm not extremely familiar with afterburner, unfortunately. Does it also monitor CPU and memory as well as the GPU?

severe anvil
#

Yeah.

waxen aurora
#

Also are you using it to overclock your GPU atm?

severe anvil
#

I'm undervolted and underclocked on the GPU - it has been rock stable with Cyberpunk 2077, path tracing, for hours on end.

waxen aurora
#

Hmm. Okay was checking because some ti cards and overclocked cards were having some issues with crashing in the past - though I haven't seen it for a bit.

#

but I don't think there have been any issues with underclocking ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Can you tell me your current driver version?

severe anvil
#

These settings have also been the exact same for the last few months. Nothing has changed on my end and the game's otherwise been very solid since release for me. Wife and I have been playing a lot since the update, so we've clocked in some hours. It's just, that patch on the 21st hit and then I'm not stable anymore. No setting changes, hardware changes, or anything major. 566.14 released on 11/12

waxen aurora
#

Okay. I know at least a couple people did have a problem with that latest one. would you be willing to roll back your driver to the previous one to see if that stabilizes it?

severe anvil
#

Yeah. I can do that. I'm in the middle of some stuff, so I wouldn't be able to get around to it right away. But I can DDU and then roll back later tonight.

waxen aurora
#

Okay. I would try DDU and reinstall the latest one first, just to be sure something funky didn't happen on the install, then roll back if it persists.

severe anvil
#

I'll give it a shot and post if it happens again or not.

#

Thanks for your time.

#

I appreciate it.

waxen aurora
#

Let me know how it goes though. If not we can try and take a look and see if we can't find out what is going on. As far as I am aware there is nothing from within the game itself currently causing frequent crashes.

# severe anvil I appreciate it.

Oh - one more thing - How much free space do you have on the drive where the game is installed (and steam if they are different drives)?

severe anvil
#

953GB on the NVME drive where Steam's installed and 570GB on the Crucial P5 Plus NVME drive that Enshrouded is installed on.

waxen aurora
#

Okay one more thing to try.

severe anvil
#

Sure thing

waxen aurora
#

Might want to try this one first - Clear out the shader cache folder in Enshrouded. ...\Steam\steamapps\shadercache\1203620\

severe anvil
#

When I ran the tool fix, it cleared the shader cache in two directories

#

Clearing nVidia GPU cache: Done
Clearing game shader cache in F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\shadercache\1203620: Done
Clearing game shader cache in C:\Users\Ken\AppData\Local\enshrouded\caches: Done

waxen aurora
#

ah right... I forget that Liandry's tool does that >< lol

severe anvil
#

Took a minute to recompile shaders on launch, so can confirm they did get wiped clear.

waxen aurora
#

So that appears to be the vulkan and game shader caches. you could clear out your GPU ones as well, but that would also clear out the shader caches for all your games, and is a bit more of a long-shot.

#

For some reason shader caches are... everywhere ๐Ÿคฃ

#

Steam even has one separate from the game as well

severe anvil
#

Would rather not go nuclear. I'll try the driver reinstall, then roll back and go from there.

waxen aurora
#

Okay - while you are doing that and testing the game, keep your monitoring software open and looks for spikes in usage or temperature that could be happening as well. It might give us a clue where to go next if that doesn't work.

severe anvil
#

CPU temps while playing Enshrouded max at 55c according to HWInfo and max temp on the 4070ti super was 56c.

waxen aurora
#

Nice and cool.

severe anvil
#

Yeah. We're both older, so we do have a 60fps cap. No need to build homes with voxels at 120fps like the kids nowadays.

waxen aurora
#

Though I am older as well - I can assure you that there is no difference between 60fps and 120 when building. ๐Ÿ˜„

#

Or really much in this game. I think kids these days just like seeing the higher numbers. ๐Ÿคฃ

severe anvil
#

They're not paying the power bill.

waxen aurora
#

I am from a time when games were text-based and it would take 10-30 seconds for a text-based page to load xD

severe anvil
#

Yeah - ditto. When 16 colors was amazing.

waxen aurora
#

AND they run their AC all the time.

severe anvil
#

Well, nice thing is it's winter now in my neck of the woods, so I ~could~ run a space heater. Or I ~could~ start building fake houses at 120fps.

#

All right, going to go make sure folks in the house are fed. Then I'll give your suggestions a try. I'll let you know if it works or not.

Got into Safe Mode in Win 11, ran DDU, then reinstalled drivers. This also removed my undervolt. Played for two hours or so and had no issues, whereas before it was a crash under an hour . So, I think it's safe to either chalk it up to video driver -or- since this game isn't taxing my video card at my framerate, perhaps at lower clock speeds, the undervolt was too aggressive and unstable at the lower clock speeds/voltages but fine at the top voltage/clock speed. Thanks for the help!
