#nope, no partitions

Hey I really appreciate the advice. I am all self taught so far with servers
We are dealing with big files, so the standard Windows install goes onto the C drive formatted with a 4k cluster size. With larger files, this can become an issue.
So having a separate partition for windows and one for servers will help cpu?
If you can shrink that main partition, and create a separate partition formatted with a 64k cluster size, it will help with file I/O.
It helps with file I/O, not CPU performance. However, the files being contiguous does help a lot, as the server does not have to perform as many I/O calls.
interesting. one of the guys I game with, who has also had access to my server to run his Project Zomboid server off of, works in IT. I bet he could help me set that up
He should be able to. I have a son-in-law who is starting to understand with what he is doing.
that should help every other game server in the future I would assume as well
The HW you have there should be more than capable of handling the Enshrouded Server.
Correct, as you get away from those smaller blocks of data.
Honestly this little thing has run small Arma 3, Stationeers, Eco, and a few others servers with ease. But i didn't dare use it for Conan Exiles. Again I appreciate all the help
if I can get this partitioned properly and it helps our enshrouded issue that would be fantastic
To help out a little more, get your swap file onto a different partition, format that partition as a 64k cluster size as well. You will see a little performance when the system decides to use the swap file.
In the end, this will probably extend the life of your server another couple of years. When you move to new HW, just replicate what you did on your current server.
You can even use this info on your main gaming rig(s) ๐ .
Ok i'll let my buddy know to see if he knows how to do this. I have partitioned before, and I bet I could figure it out.
Honestly I'm just glad that SSD is so cheap now
specifically NVMe
If you can find a tool to do so, also keep on top of the file fragmentation. Whenever Steam updates my games, I end up with some of the games having a 10 to 1 ratio of fragments to MB of file size.
Oof, alright i'll keep that in mind
By all means, I am not saying to defrag the entire drive. Do the files. And yes, even moving files degrades the drive a little. However, with most of these SSDs/NVMes having a 100k hours to mean time failure... yeah, I am not keeping these things for 10+ years ๐
right, and most of those files are just server files. if i backup or lose the saves, either way i'm not worried. a new drive is cheap
All this aside, do try out the other server. See if it does solve the issue. If it does not, then you have a backup plan, or that is the backup plan LOL
oh for imperium. yeah i plan too. gportal support either doesn't care, or knows they don't have enough resources and is pretending they don't know what is happening
which is unfortunate because i used to love using gportal
Very possible. I was looking at GPortal as a server option for Enshrouded. Could not justify spending the money per month for 1-2 of my friends playing on the server. So, setup my own instead.
I was hoping mine could handle it. I will have to test it again and see what was bottlenecking
Someone tried running the server on a AMD Phenom II 955T, and was missing this instruction set: AVX2. That CPU you have should be able to handle the server. I mean the CPU I am using is from Q1 2013, and the one you are using is from Q2 2014.
Make that AVX, not AVX2.
ah ok. well my community will get gig update this month, that could also fix it. I have an upload speed of 40 right now, so going to gig could help. Though i would assume Gportal would have gig and that shouldn't be their issue. I know upload was a big issue for my arma server
Be careful thinking that getting a 1Gbps connection is going to solve all your internet speed issues. If you are into networking, be sure to ensure you do not have bufferbloat ๐ . Have a couple coworkers on 1Gbps connections, and when they tested their lines, they about died that I was getting an A grade, and they were down at C and D. I run on a 60Mbps/5Mbps link.
I keep my speed about 90-95% of my top speed to keep the buffer overload down ๐
oh yeah networking is insanely complicated but i understand its not all about up and down. i have my own router and modem and configure as much as i can to optimize it for gaming without risking anything
Thank you again though
np. I had my once a day rant ๐ . I need to get a few friends together to see what this lag issue within the Enshrouded Server is about. See if we can get it to pop. Then throw some different HW at it to see if that makes a difference. And nope, I am not with Keen ๐
we have the difficulty setting where enemies are at 150% spawn rate, so that may cause some issues. but we are only 4 of us. Also, my buddies said this was a non issue back when the game first launched. So i believe half the issue is the game itself, still being unoptimized and in early access
Yeah, some of it is the game. It may be that when they added the options, they may need to go back and optimize some stuff. The game engine they are using they built themselves, so there may be some optimization that needs to happen.
Hmm... I wonder if it is the increased spawn rate that folks are having issues with... Will need to play with that when my friends/family and I get together... as well as really load testing my poor little server ๐
the times it pops is when you activate a light shrine thing, landing a glider, exploring new areas (loading chunks and a lot of enemies), and teleporting pretty consistently.
well increased spawn rate is just one of the hard mode settings. we just turned it up while doing normal mode for more enemies to kill
Yeah, it is pretty bad on the XP scaling imo. I just about mined my way to level 25 LOL
right! like you are forced to explore and do quests to lvl
When I was getting 12+XP for grabbing ore... Yeah, I'll swing that pick until it breaks. Fix it, then repeat. Besides, I mined my way up areas, that was fun ๐
so something i noticed after i tried on my own dedicated server again, is when a lag spike hit, i got this in the cmd:

this was a spike during combat
Wow!
I am doing more testing, and I just tested it with my dedicated server in house, and a player on the opposite coast (i'm east, he is canada west coast), with his 100ms+. He played alone and went into a high volume enemy dungeon where we have had issues on gportal. Every time he reported a "lag" spike i looked to see what my machine abnormality reported. Every time it was during combat, enemies running in place, I saw a network drop like so:
Every time he opened a door or out of combat lag we got something like this:
no gpu, ram, or cpu issues the entire time, they all stayed well below 25%
i'm doing more testing now with multiple people, but i'm almost completely convinced that half the issue is networking, and the other half is enshrouded server itself needing work
i have not partitioned yet though fyi
Are you running Windows drivers for the network card, or Intel's drivers?
No worries. My son-in-law, daughter and I were playing last night, and the only time things went sideways, was around a flame shrine spot that is static.
but were you all on the same network?
No, they are about 50 miles north of me, wire milage is probably closer to 100 miles ๐
hmm. not too far, but i'm sure your network is pretty solid
i'm in florida and my friend is in west canada, so massive 100+ms difference there, and his network is crap, he doesn't modify his network at all
while i do
It was on my side, dropped my FPS from around 30FPS to 17-19FPS. Oddest thing I have seen.
The kids were running at about 80ms, and I was going in/out with a 15ms.
only fps drops are in bases and when first teleporting into a flame shrime which makes sense
so just slight network drops and ups, so it should all be my or the clients networks. i'll keep testing and configuring
sure thing.
1 question, did you go through holow halls or places of high enemy density, and did you have normal enemy density in the settings?
i guess 2 questsions lol
My kids are just starting out. They were level 1 and 2 last night. Not sure now.
ok. just wondering. i'll update my network driver and keep testing. thanks!
I know where you are talking, there is a Hallowed Halls that has a bunch of enemies, they are just not ready for that ๐ .
