I see where you are coming from with this and I also wish the wording better encapsulated the concerns of the deal rather than an overarching concern for the rights of gamers. So, while the petition itself may not solve everything, we were able to directly inform the people who can help, how they can help.

This is... kinda misleading, in a way. DLSS was already AI upscaling, that is what it has always been. There has always been issues with text looking like ai-generated mumbo jumbo if you turned it up too high, for example

DLSS sounds like something I never want to use.

If you balance it right it's pretty great, honestly. You can double your fps and it does not look different at all to the human eye. What it's essentially doing is lowering the resolution a little, lets say to 720p, and then upscaling it to 1080p. As long as you aren't losing too much information by lowering the resolution (which you usually don't), it can produce basically the same image for way less performance cost.

but yeah, if you lower it dramatically to some of the really aggressive settings, it can look weird and blurry and distorted

I mean, at the end of the day, DLSS is a bonus on top of already existing optimization (and a pretty damn effective one). I think people forget that optimization has always been a problem in a lot of games, rushed releases have always been a thing. I think maybe it feels worse these days because PC parts are way more expensive (relatively) than they used to be, meaning that people are playing with less modern hardware on average, and devs keep pushing the envelope of visual fidelity leading to really demanding games.

I looked into this further, and there's some truth to this post, the person who posted it just doesn't know the correct terms for what they're talking about. The new DLSS 5 seems to take more... creative liberties, I guess? Rather than simply trying to fill out the resolution of an image (interpreting the in-between pixels when taking an image from 720p to 1080p, for example), it will actually try to enhance the final image all by itself. Basically, it will attempt to create something that looks even "better" than what the game would look at natively.

I am also extremely skeptical of this, but it depends on how aggressive it is. NVIDIA claims that devs will have full creative control over how DLSS 5 interacts with their games, allowing them to tune how aggressive this upscaling is, or have it leave certain visual elements alone to maintain visual style. If that's true, I don't think it will be particularly harmful, but we'll have to wait and see.

Yeah, the reality is that graphics are one of the best elements of a game when it comes to marketing. For massive studios with mega marketing budgets, it always makes sense to make a game that looks as good as possible, because that sells more than anything else. All the games that are being developed with gameplay over looks are mostly indie games that don't have marketing budgets, and need to rely on fun and word of mouth to sell, or competitive games that value visual clarity (like Valorant, or Deadlock).

The answer for why games keep pushing graphics more and more, is money lol

In a way, yeah. I mean you have to understand that for mega budget studios, the vast majority of their sales come from pre-orders and the first month after the game goes live. Most of those people are not buying the game based on gameplay reviews, because the game probably isn't even out yet for anyone to review it. They're buying it because they saw a trailer or something that looked really really cool.

Those cinematic trailers you see at gamescom easily cost millions of dollars to make and host, and they don't even show any gameplay. That should tell you how many people are buying games without even knowing if the game is good lol

Most of the places they show it are during interactions, where the characters are mostly still, BUT at ~6:48, you can see the player move while it's on and it looks HORRIBLE, like if motion blur and screen tearing had a demon baby.

I kinda get the whole "looks like AI slop" point but... its not changing any geometry, just the lighting... So its not really "generating" anything but changing lighting and working with what the game engine gives it to work with.
It's overtuned in basically every comparison tho. Needs to be way more subtle to not look like the characters are in a photoshooting setup all the time.
We'll see how this goes.

The thing is, it IS generating things though. If you look at the faces it changes a lot of their facial features. At one point, the ANIMATIONS are different with DLSS on. It is changing things that are actual design choices, not just 'enhancing'.

I can't really judge what its gonna actually be like ingame, while playing, I'll have to check that out to form an educated opinion, as it stands, I think it looks overdone and leans heavily into the AI slop theme, but since it should not alter any geometry etc I'm curios as to how that happened in the demos.

Would have it much rather as an option in a photomode or something. Tunable by ourselves.

The parts that make it look really bad is 6:48 where the character moves and it looks like motion blur but worse. And 14:44 where the animation of the cloak completely changes.

My trust for big companies and AI slop is at an all time low, so I'm definitely starting from a place of skepticism.

Id have to play around with the photomode tools/custom lights but Im pretty sure I could get that scene of grace to look similar ingame right now with a couple lights. Bar from the makeup.

I also wonder, just given what I know about image gen, how it handles consistency over time.

Like, if I look at a character, look away, and then look back, will they be slightly different? How will the image generator know to add all the same exact details again? Even in the demos they showed, they tried very hard to hold the camera still, but even then I noticed weird inconsistencies like shadows appearing/disappearing out of nowhere and stuff.

I've seen comments that it is atleast consistent between game boots / reloads so it really seems to act on materials and motion vectors mainly. But i doubt this can run without artifacts and glitches.

They only showed "photorealistic" games, I bet this tech won't work at all on games with more of a visual style, whereas DLSS 4 works great no matter what visual style you have

Yeah I guess I just don't understand who this tech is for. DLSS is one of the most popular things NVIDIA has ever made, specifically because it allows you to play games at high resolutions with way lower performance costs.

DLSS 5... increases performance cost? And for that cost it allows you to take games that are already photorealistic and make them... maybe arguably a bit more photorealistic, maybe? If you're being generous? But really I think it looks worse, personally.
