There is no update, if you've got something 'downloading' on steam, then it's a steam thing, most likely varifying files, which for whatever reason it still calls a download even though it doesn't download anything.

I only generate my own shaders, as I had issues with games crashing when ising shaders form other people

Disabling steam from precaching shaders solved that completely for me, I also increased the shader storage in my video drives a lot from the default allocated space

"Good graphics sells, shaders have become a lot more intensive and complex because they make games look really good. Shaders used to be compiled in real time because they were simple enough that that was viable, but at this point trying to do that on consumer hardware runs into a lot of bugs and performance issues (which you can see in Enshrouded for example, if you try to play the game before shaders are done compiling)."

Modern games use waaaaaaaay more shaders than older games, because they make games look very good. The consequence is that that makes games harder to run on consumer hardware, and shader compilation is a way to reduce how difficult they are to run by doing a lot of the processing work up-front.

All that said, we know shader compiling is very time consuming in Enshrouded, speeding up the process is a big priority for us before 1.0

That's the whole thing about Stutterstruggle with Unreal. You can't just compile all the possible shaders in a AAA UE Project or you're gonna sit there for 8hrs. Thats what the PSO Caching stuff and relativly short shader precomp comes from. BUT it rarely, if ever, catches all the shaders the game actually needs, hence, it stutters.
We need a better solution for this in general going forward.

I think UEs problem is that it's such a common engine that's so easy to use that it ironically makes it very easy to create janky, unoptimized games with it haha. That's more of a dev problem than an engine problem, though.

It had a reputation that all unity games were janky and unoptimized, but that's because it was one of the easiest engines to get into (especially for solo devs). So a lot of people's janky, unoptimized projects just happened to be made in Unity.

Yeah. They try to find all the shaders the game needs during playtest sessions and all, but you'll always miss some and then you get shader compile stutters during gameplay.
But you don't want a consume to compile 100% of every possible shader that could be used in the game either. Because then, well, like I said, you're gonna sit there for 8 hrs probably at 100% CPU usage.

A lot of game files are interconnected for optimization reasons, same reason why hotfixes like this can be several gigabytes despite having relatively "small" changes. When a small tweak is made to a big file, the whole file has to be redownloaded and recompiled.

But yeah, I'm also not an engineer so I don't know the exact technical details.

the game forces you into a "sit" animation while playing instruments, so you can play near a fire and get a rested bonus.
you can only rest at a fire while indoors, or outdoors while sitting :P

I keep dodging into an enemy, then being forced into a crouched/stealth position due to hitboxes, and then can't really attack well

it's a hitbox thing... when you dodge, your hitbox gets smaller, I think 2 blocks tall, smaller than crouched which is 3 blocks tall

If I wanted to crouch I'd hit C

but once you try to "get up" it checks for available space... and enemies can occupy the "available space" and force you into a crouched stance

if you dodge roll under a 3 block tall platform, you'll be crouched... which makes sense, the problem is it treats enemies like platforms too and suddenly you're crouched in front of a skeleton ||censored for funniness but not actually putting anything here cause I am a wholesome individual but I am sure you dirty minded folks can think of something to put here to laugh at||
