well, like hitting certain areas of the game would drop them quicker, leave blood trails, have stronger game, better or more variety of meat per animal. cooking over the fire takes longer, less meat sometimes but more filling, different meat gives different buffs, like warmth on a full stomach, or stronger but slower, or faster but weaker.

thirst on top of it buffing stamina not only that extra stamina but a thirst meter that even tho you got the buff you can still drink only to just top off that buff, but being thirsty inflicts damage, and if dehydrated makes slower not only walking running but melee attacks.

just a thought to add to the "survival"

Yeah, I feel like SotF dropped the ball on a few things that made the first one a great game. Not having the blueprint building system, the atmosphere wasn't as good, a few things about crafting and building felt more fiddly and less engaging

I feel like that system in The Forest was more intuitive, but it also allowed for hijinks like overlapping blueprints before filling them in to get different effects you normally couldn't do

In The Forest building felt creative and inspired, while in SotF it just felt... serviceable? Functional? Kind of inoffensive?

If they aren't already, make sure your shadow and lighting settings are on the lowest possible

The last update added a lot of new dynamic lighting that did a number on performance

Like, my system is pretty up to date but I definitely felt a difference after the update. Went from the 70 - 80 FPS range to like 50-60 before I tweaked some settings

I bought this game the week it came out on Steam and returned it within the 2hr window. I couldn't run it on minimum settings at 1080p. Newer rig runs this fine now but curious about the performance it would've had prior to the update you are mentioning!

I'm speaking to the performance pre-January patch (the Chinese New Year one) and now, which would have been the same performance of around the launch window

Though I think the first couple post launch patches improved things somewhat from the launch version

I mean, the game has always been fairly intensive with all the dynamic lighting and shadows, but the most recent update exacerbated that

And I mean, that's really the issue with the performance in general, I think (I don't know, not a programmer, just intuition): You have two very intensive tasks, one CPU related (keeping track of all the very tiny voxels) and one GPU related (a lot of dynamic lighting, shadows, smoke/fog, etc) happening at the same time

So TBF I'm not saying it's an easy juggling act on their part, but I am saying that ultimately the end user isn't concerned with that, they just want a product that runs smoothly

yeah if you're not willing to spend any money on it, one of you has to host the game and the other person join in. Any server that is always online will be something that you spend money on, either by setting up a dedicated server yourself on your own machine and just spending whatever costs there are to keep it always on and running, or by paying a hosting service to do that for you.

But yeah, for a dedicated server you'd need another machine to host it on, or you can just host your game when you play

So how is quest progression? How much of the map is released? I'm just trying to see how quickly 4 or 5 players would finish the game.

You could finish it within half a day, if you bruteforced it (and know what you are doing) or you can put easy 60+ hours into it and still be doing things left right n center.
Quest prog is more used as a fairly simple guideline to show you where to get certain stuff rather than beeing a full fleshed narrow story.
Currently the main thing the Game holds is its base Building system, whilst you can have fun with its combat and exploration, if those are your pure focus, then you have other games out there better suiting your needs.

Some world changes might get covered up if your flame altar happens to be in a spot where things got changed/added, but we've also made adjustments to ensure that quest items will still be accessible if your base happens to be on top of them

A lot of the areas that are "out of bounds" right now aren't actually completed areas, they're mostly barren. They just are designed to look good from a distance right now, like a façade, but we're not hiding a bunch of content there or anything.

My only real complaint so far about this game is that the building feels very under-rewarded compared to everything else

It's a bit unfair that you can go and collect rocks from a mountain side and gain 2 levels in 30 minutes but if you build a full mansion you gain nothing

Maybe instead of rewarding you with levels the building could give you a different benefit. Like building faster, or reduced cost prices for crafting building items, something like that so it's still something that gets encouraged.

On max settings I imagine it will probably be harder to run, but that's because there's new tech we've introduced with this update at max settings. A lot of the tweaks also weren't actually big additions, but tweaks to existing systems, so those shouldn't impact too much

Farm up liquid and spores. You can get cores directly from Banchees, Thunderbrutes, and bosses like Monstrosities or Sicklescythes, but in the time it takes to track them down and kill them you could have crafted more cores running around a shroud with a lot of enemies scooping up shroud liquid and taking down Fell for spores

Revelwood shrouds are pretty good for being densely packed with enemies that are relatively low level, Nomad too, and the first shroud you walk through at the start by the beginning base location (Braelyn Bridge) has tons of liquid

Just ignore the bigger mushrooms you cut down and collect the smaller mushrooms that you press E to gather, there's tons

Other games do it, they probably just don't make the user aware that shaders are being compiled in the background. Very basically, when you update your GPU, things change that could affect the way shaders are compiled, and bad shaders can cause any number of issues from something just looking a bit funky to actual game crashes. Because of this, it's always safer for shaders to be recompiled after an update of either the drivers or of the game.

Really the only way for developers to prevent this would be to compile shaders on the fly, which is an old-school method of compiling shaders and generally leads to extreme performance issues, especially in games like this.

There are many very valid reasons that game companies don't release update dates for games, not the least of which is that without the pressure of an exact date for the release, they are free to push back a release that is not ready or release it early when it is.

Keen proved positive this exact thing with the last update, which they had set a strict date for release, and the release wasn't ready and full of bugs - as opposed to their other updates which were a lot more refined, and while they had bugs, they were well under a reasonable amount for an update.

Granted I was never the type of person to schedule time off work for a game release or update, even when I was still working, but I can see if you were that it would be annoying - but it's always going to be more annoying to take that time off only to have a buggy mess on your hands and your vacation time wasted. lol
