Controversy has nothing to do wit it, tbh. The 1400s were a sexist time, women would not have seen many combat/warrior/mercenary positions because of the society they lived in. There is probably very minimal record of them ever getting such positions. The game is devoted to historical accuracy, and seeing women or children fighting in gladiatorial arenas was simply not common enough to justify adding.

Because most of the NAMED examples are of course going to be like-- noblewomen who lead armies, but there's also numerous accounts of women taking on various impromptu combat roles, which I just don't think is refutable. Frankly the social mobility depicted n the game is patently ahistoric regardless of the gender of the participant, so I'm not sure arguing that women specifically wouldn't have the social mobility required to ascend to a ladyship is really that logical, since no peasant would.

I don't think that's refutable either, however you also have to consider that impromptu combat roles are not the same as what is depicted in Half Sword, nor is that really relevant to gladiatorial events. Also, the women leading armies are, as you said, noblewomen of already determined status. Sadly, as previously stated, the 1470s were a very sexist time, and that in the unlikely scenario that a peasant would climb the social ladder it almost certainly not be a woman.

I disagree that the climbing of the social ladder is ahistorical, rather than extremely simplified and streamlined for the sake of gameplay. It would be ridiculous to simulate years and years of fighting, mercenary work, and business exchange that it would take to become a knight let alone a lord.

I don't disagree that the game takes liberties either, and that the scenario is generally pretty unlikely from the get-go. I also admire your desire to see ladies who participated in combat represented, however I just don't see it being viable in the way Half Sword plays narratively.

If warstaff refers to the Placon de Picot, then I'd say they're both about equally concussive. I think the difference lies in whether or not you want to kill them, since the spikes on the Picot makes them far more lethal.
