Everything at the core, it was perfect. The best gunplay in the series, amazing graphics and lighting, pretty nifty fortification system, etc.
It was what was on top of that core that made it horrible. Weird customisation, PR disasters, identity crisis, early (and then later) TTK changes, paywalled BR mode, etc.

Being an option wasn't the point, it was the fact that the BR mode had a decent amount of time put into it, time that could've been spent elsewhere.
If they really wanted the BR model tacked on, they could've made it f2p, which would've helped marketing and advertisement substantially more than it being behind the game's selling price
