It's misunderstood I'd say. It's less that raytracing is some fancy shader or something that's supposed to make games look way better.

The main selling of raytracing really is that it is I suppose a more efficient way of simulating light. For less realistic games raster is definitely alot easier to render than raytraced, especially on hardware that's more suited to raster... But as you make a game more realistic the performance decrease on raster engines scales differently compared to raytracing, eventually you get to a point where raytracing is simply less bogged down.

... The main reason raytracing is naturally difficult to run is because you have to essentially draw lines from the players camera over to the faces on the models that make up the game world, to put it simply the line basically has to get the right distance without undershooting or over shooting and this requires equations that graphics processors traditionally really aren't very good at. You also need the angle of the face relative to the ray and all that stuff.

But once you have the means to calculate these rays en-masse in realtime you've already done most of the work required for shadows, reflections, scattering, and basically anything real light would do.

Mostly because minecraft in itself is not well optimized, so starting from the ground up already know these types of things makes it easy to stamp them out

Also being an indie game of sorts, even though based essentially on minecraft, the devs work on it all the time unlike mojang which is really slow on rolling out fairly minor updates
