In the past I have said that frogmouth great helms where not used in the 15th century except in jousting. In recent months I have become aware of one man's fight to change this assumption, so I asked Augusto to join me on Zoom to discuss why he thinks they where used in battle well into the 15th century.

this him outside the armor

#

and this is how he uses it for battles

#

Speaking of Petr Brožek, that guy as armourer is genius. If you have the opportunity, find his book 'Platnéřství" (Armouring), as that's unique work on how to make the armour and science behind it. Only other like that I know of is Collins' 16th cent armour book

Possible English translation: "...item, by what has been said, lord king [Alfonso V] has ordered payment to master Thomas de Missaglia, armourer of Milan, for a complete suit of armour with gilding and fine workmanship that he has made for the said lord king, which armour includes a helmet and all the pieces adorned with gold..."

seems he was a rather prevalent military leader that was in service to, at various points, frederich iii, king laidslaus of bohemia, and king matthias corvinus. held lands in western hungary that came under the jurisdiction of the hungarian crown when matthias was given the crown and he seems to have feuded with frederick iii in service to matthias late in his life.

#

the monastery looks like this nowadays as it went under 19th century baroqe remodeling but likely originally looked in the style seen on the banner.

Hey guys, I've been putting some work into the drive database. If you're in the MK1212 chat I put it there too. For anyone who doesn't know, it's a collection of images to give an introduction to arms and armour of various places & times. I'd be very grateful if anyone wanted to take a look and let me know their thoughts… warning: THIS IS NOT AN ACADEMIC SOURCE AND IS NOT INTENDED TO BE:

https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RPQNotONhJhJI9DTIq4VskwOvBVT_7-Q?usp=drive_link

Also just be sure to view it in 'grid' layout not 'list' layout

I know the modern sections could use some more work so consider that under construction 🚧

"Artist: Juan Gómez (collaborator of Juan Guas ).
Year: 1469.
Original location: Convent of San Millán.
Current location: Ávila Cathedral (Chapel of Our Lady of the Cloister). He founded the Convent of San Millán, which was built in 1468; and it was there that he wished to be buried. His epitaph read:
Here lies Juan Núñez Dávila , who founded this Monastery and the Church of Santa María de las Vacas. He died in the year 1469. In his testamentary wishes he wrote:
...that then in the year that I die they make me a very fine alabaster effigy with its alabaster pillows, armed with the weapons that are now used and with sleeves and skirts that look like gilded jazeran mail and the sword and spurs likewise gilded and a page at the feet with some gilded spurs in his hand and a French helmet with its gilded pommels and a dragon on which the said page is lying." https://caballerosyarte2.blogspot.com/2015/05/don-juan-nunez-davila.html
