what do you want, do you just want to conk your enemies to victory? then just make the head as weighty as you can and don't miss
if you want a more technical fight for grappling and so make it about as tall as you are max and reign in the weight so that you can be responsive with it
"best" varies quite a bit depending on what you want to achieve
personally i am in the latter camp so the only thing i need are a long spike and a simple metal buttcap (it doesn't have to be the hook either)

Because auto parry will only position your weapon for head on strikes, if they have a flail or a differently shaped weapon like an axe they can just go around and chop your head off, the game didn't have it at once.

we can still hire mercenaries, and at the levels where you cant they can be made 1v1. i have never been poor in this game, partly cus its super easy to keep mercenaries paid, and cus the store stalls out halfway through.
