I think that makes sense. From what I understand, in those times jesters were typically royalty themselves, and the role of jester was a fairly significant position. Often times they were advisors to their baron/lord/etc as well.
In the lore that we do have, it seems the baron and the jester are rather close. After the baron took over once the previous lord died (which is an event I speculate about in itself, since baron would be a title under lord, he could have been vying for more power) - he let his jester, described as "his" specifically so it seems this jester has always been his own, redesign several buildings and such, adding the traps and what have you.
Regarding the old lord's hall -
Used to be a fine place, years back. Hogs roasting on the spits, music from the lute, laughter thick as the smoke. But once the old lord died and this one took his seat, the smell changed. He kept the fires, aye, but not for meat. Now the pits burn for those who’ve tried his patience one too many times. Says it warms his bones to hear a man scream truth.
They say the stones still sweat there at night, as if the heat never left. Me, I don’t go near it. Some fires never go out, no matter how long the hall stands cold.```

One of these things could be confirmed to be a crime, and even that's still speculation depending on what exactly the debt is and to who it is owed. "Probably" is used so there's no certainty that the protagonist is actually here for any of these reasons, just that they could be possibilities based on what the narrator has apparently witnessed before as it seems to be common in Frankenburg.
All we know for sure about the protagonist is they're a beggar, new to Frankenburg and they're living in Gottfried's tavern making money doing errands for him and participating in fighting games.
