work on your spacing and how you gauge distance, id almost recommend putting the shield on your back and shoulder and attempt to use halfsword grip/2hand to get more precise stabs or cuts

if you arent already familiar with the concept i say spacing and distance cause youll wanna spend as little time in his attack range, and only jump in the moment you know you can attempt a strike, and once your in the pocket, stay there dont let him get distance on you again

Its tough, but you can get there with a fair bit of practice. You'll want to build a sword that lets you maneuver for such a strike, keeping the point of balance close to the crossguard (three inches out from it, if anything) will help, adding counter weight to the pommel will help too.
