A very small community not generating enough revenue for the publisher and dev team to sustain it.

But since it isn't side scroll, both players need to be able to see from the perspective of character. So split screen is the only option.

What you are describing though, would require them to code the game to be able to connect to another instance of the game. That is where the team is at an experience disadvantage.

Because its gameplay is primarily based on the physics engine meaning the dysnc from a server connection would make it extremely annoying and buggy.
Even the biggest online shooters (one of the easiest genres to make) still have a problem with desync issues and have to rule that in when it comes to hit-scanning. You know when you play a shooter and end up trading kills all the time or end up getting killed AFTER you have already reached cover? Imagine that but not just with players position, the position of everything; arms, legs, head, weapons, ect.
It would make it almost impossible to parry or do anything more intricate as the enemy might be 5 feet to the left with his sword in your gut on his screen but you’re will be completely different.

in shooters they “fix” it by recording past player positions, so if the enemy shoots at where you were they can expect that the enemy was shooting you and apply damage (which is why you can die after you’ve already gotten behind cover)

A game like this can’t do that nor any “solutions” currently developed. It’s a hardware tech issue. Peer to peer LAN party would lessen issue and COULD make it more playable, but Split screen is really the only stable playable solution as you only have to worry about the 1 game instance instead of trying to duct tape more than one instance together which as I’ve said even AAA studios have problems with, even with a simpler non physics based system

TLDR: multiple instances of the game running are hard to patch together , especially with physics. Think of AAA games that have the physics bug out in multiplayer, now imagine you have a 1/32nd of the budget if even, and instead of those physics being just for cars or objects, it applies to EVERYTHING in the game and is the core mechanic
