yeah, when you die in gauntlet, past the first tier, you get sent to the abyss, then you fight a few dudes and ultimately the last boss you beat in gauntlet, if you can beat him again you are sent to the rank you were
a little tip for abyss: just keep running around and avoiding dudes, and you'll keep finding loot, the boss only shows up after you defeat a set number of enemies
