But something else I see, is that you are running at the enemy while swinging. This will change the way your swings move.

I would add, since they didn't mention it, the other advantage of parrying while dodging is to throw their blade off balance, or off of its flow. That downward attack may have had a follow up planned, even if dodged. But since contact was made, the blade can be diverted to a different angle.
