Every time you win a game in the gauntlet you advance in a few points, after a sufficient number of points, you go against the boss of the tier you're in. Beating the boss brings you to the next tier
You repeat this until you reach the final tier, the baron, where you have to fight progressively stronger opponents and collect gear until you go up against the baron. Beating the baron will mean beating the gauntlet, as well as unlocking the baron as a playable character in the free mode.
