If you are holding a crossguarded weapon in that way you lose the utility of the crossguard which why when doing this with a sword you would have armour. If you are doing it with out a crossguard with for instance a staff you dont lose the defensive utility of the crossguard and you can defend with new areas of the staff that wouldnt necessarily be as effective if you where holding in other ways
