here is a shield press which goes at his arms that hold the weapons and stops his attack

also if you press right click it will always hold the buckler out in front, and that way you always return there for easier blocking, but mostly I do it actively by holding down right click instead

swinging can get messed up by having the shield there and going across the line so sometimes you might have to lower it again
