Try practicing with Arrow Time. It will help you understand just how little movement is needed to be effective, and how large movements will make you less effective
Arrow Time was the final step to really start learning how to parry for me

Press F.
It uses stamina so you have only a short time to use it.
For parrying just hit F as you see your enemy start to wind up so you have time to react (because you will also move slowly)
Disengage it by pressing F again

Also if you weren't aware, the game has "assisted parry"
It isn't perfect and some people hate it, but there is a small window where your sword will attempt to react to a nearby weapon/strike. I find the window to be very narrow, basically straight in front of you. You can move a little side to side to block incoming attacks

You may want to practice on the dummy or after a match, finding the "ideal path" for your weapon.
Every weapon has a set number of paths that are easier to manipulate through.
It's also worth noting that your body is a lever, the heavier the weapon, the more footwork and bodyweight you will need to throw around to manipulate it the way you want.
Worn armor can also weigh you down and make some manipulation slower (but sometimes more forceful) from my observation
