The armour is more optinmised for the sport and we use modern grapple and striking techniques. HEMA is where you go for accurate combat, Re-enactment is where you go for accurate gear, buhurt is where you go to beat the shit out of your mates with weapons and have them come out of it mostly unharmed

If you swing and miss - and you will miss going 1v1 with a pike against shorter weapons, the leverage on 15/20 feet is insane - or they bat aside a thrust, they are definitely crossing that distance faster than you can pull it back, deal with the back end, and thrust again with force. Especially if we're talking armoured vs civilian clothes, you best hope your backup weapon is a warpick or heavy mace

The concept was the guy in armour has no weapon, but same point - getting past armour is HARD, you'd need a knife specifically designed for going through the maille that covers the gaps like a rondel or whatever and remember that he'd be able to try and grab it from you and doesn't have to worry about things like hand or limb cuts in grappling distance
