you can try holding alt in thrust mode but you still kinda have to position yourself to make sure you are thrusting into the opponent. theres not really a way to aim the stab precisely

there's a file in appdata/local/halfswordue5 that is called something like "GauntletProgression.sav" or something, and if you delete that it removes all your progression on gauntlet
I think getting all the way to the end and beating ultimate challenge takes you back also but I've never got there cuz crashes

With longswords I've found a couple of ways to get relatively good angles with alt, like using something that looks like a fool's guard or alting from a center overhead stance. Have you tried resetting your lock? Press z to unlock then z again to relock.
Do it a couple times to see where the circle lands on your screen and line it up with their head. You'll now passively hold your aim a bit higher.
But sometimes you just have to look up, and as the camera moves back down, find your angle and jump on ut.

There is always spawned in the center of the arena. You will want to sidestep or kite him away first. The timing of grabbing and stabbing is very narrow if you just rush in.
