Then jumped in and beat it in like four tries, three of which I died almost immediately to pitchforks or the long hook polearms.

Just the physics in general. Overall it works, but when it decides to mess up it messes up bad. That's the drawback of really advanced physics systems.

The spears aren't crazy bad, but the pitchfork is absolute nonsense. Unless you also have a pitchfork, it's almost a guaranteed death. You can try to bait an overhead attack, but it's no guarantee.

My personal recommendation, just practice with the sword with no armour, and the polearms. It gives you a VERY good sense of how move in an out to avoid damage from shorter bladed weapons, and how to maintain distance with polearms. Like I said, I just spent a few weeks having fun doing that, then I jumped into the ultimate challenge and beat it in only a few tries.
